Primary Synovial Sarcoma of the Scrotum.

The report outlines a case of synovial sarcoma in the scrotal region. A 36-year-old male presented with a scrotal swelling. The lesion was completely resected, whereas the histopathologic examination revealed a spindle cell tumor. The tumor stained positive for pancytokeratin, AE1/AE3, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), TLE-1, CD99, and BCL-2. The cytogenetic testing showed a chromosomal translocation in the SS18 gene at 18q11.2, consistent with the diagnosis of primary synovial sarcoma. A year later, the patient developed liver, vertebrae, and lung metastasis, which was treated with systemic

Synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx in pregnancy.

Synovial sarcomas of the hypopharynx are a rare form of soft tissue sarcomas. In the head and neck, they are most commonly found on the pharyngeal wall in areas that do not have synovial cells. We review a case of a 23 year-old pregnant female who presented to our hospital with acute airway obstruction due to a large hypopharynx lesion. She underwent emergency tracheotomy and tumor debulking. Pathology revealed synovial sarcoma. After the procedure the patient went into labor delivering a 29 weeks premature child. Six weeks after being discharged from the hospital the patient had a partial pha

Synovial sarcoma of the foot and ankle.

Synovial sarcoma of the foot and ankle frequently is misdiagnosed, which leads to delays in treatment. The clinical records of 14 patients with synovial sarcoma of the foot and ankle were reviewed. Common findings at presentation were an enlarging mass with a variable incidence of pain, tenderness, and edema. The patients tended to be younger than patients with other soft tissue sarcomas (30 years) and had a median duration of symptoms of 14 months. Of the 14 patients, 12 underwent an attempted curative surgical procedure. Ten patients had partial foot amputations or below knee amputations, wh

Synovial sarcoma of the larynx and hypopharynx.

Synovial sarcoma represents a mesenchymal malignancy of unknown histogenesis that most often occurs in the lower limbs of young adults. The head and neck region is a relatively rare location, in which the hypopharynx and larynx are, respectively, the most and least often affected anatomic sites. Histologically, synovial sarcomas are classified into monophasic and biphasic variants. Immunohistochemistry plays a major part in the differential diagnosis, enabling the demonstration of epithelial differentiation. Both monophasic and biphasic synovial sarcomas are characterized cytogenetically by th

Synovial sarcoma of the head and neck.

Primary synovial sarcoma is an unusual tumor of the head and neck. Fewer than 75 cases have been reported in the literature. We have treated 7 additional cases; 3 in the hypopharynx, 2 in the parapharyngeal space, 1 in the oral pharynx and 1 in the posterior triangle of the neck. An enlarging cervical mass, voice change, and dysphagia were among the presenting complaints. CT revealed solitary nonhomogenous tumors from 3 to 7 cm in diameter. Microscopically, all cases showed a biphasic cellular pattern verified by immunohistochemical staining. Multimodality treatment consisted of surgery and po

Primary mediastinal synovial sarcomas.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that accounts for approximately 10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. These tumors most commonly occur in the extremities of young adults but are not restricted to this site and can arise in virtually any organ system. Synovial sarcomas originating in the mediastinum are exceptionally rare and are often mistaken for other, more common neoplasms in this location, especially since there are no specific imaging characteristics or clinical manifestations. Contrary to synovial sarcomas of the extremities, mediastinal tumors more commonly affect male p

Biphasic synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm usually involving the extremities of young adults. Localization in the head and neck region is rare. Histologically, these lesions have biphasic and monophasic variants, the latter being more rare and difficult to identify. Immunohistochemistry plays a crucial role in the diagnosis. We report a case of a biphasic synovial sarcoma arising in the hypopharynx with a review of the literature concerning this rare neoplasm.

Primary synovial sarcoma of the maxilla.

An innocuously appearing gingival mass in the maxilla revealed extensive osteolysis on radiographic examination. A rare clinical presentation of synovial sarcoma, appropriate diagnostic strategies and suitable treatment protocol in a 21-year-old male is reported herewith. It is only the third case of primary monophasic synovial sarcoma of the maxilla to be reported to the best of our knowledge and the first to have occurred in a male patient. The importance of considering synovial sarcoma in the differential diagnosis of any mass in the oral cavity is highlighted.

Synovial sarcoma of the ethmoidal sinus.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a high-grade, soft tissue, malignant disease associated with poor outcome. Typically, synovial sarcoma involves the extremities, with less than 10 per cent of cases occurring in the head and neck region. Synovial sarcoma of the paranasal sinuses is a rare entity. This paper presents a case of an elderly patient with synovial sarcoma of the ethmoidal sinus. CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old woman who had right epistaxis underwent nasal endoscopy and biopsy. The pathology indicated synovial sarcoma and the patient underwent endoscopic excision of the tumour. CONCLUSIO

Monophasic synovial sarcoma of the nasopharynx.

Synovial sarcomas are rare, aggressive malignant neoplasms, and less than 10% of cases involve the head and neck. Cases that involve the nasopharynx are even more exceptional and little information is available concerning their diagnosis and management. We report the third case of synovial sarcoma of the nasopharynx, which was diagnosed as a monophasic type and was successfully treated with a complete surgical excision followed by irradiation. The present case indicates that appropriate immunohistochemical and cytogenetic analysis are essential for accurate diagnosis of monophasic synovial sar

Primary synovial sarcoma of the uterus.

We report a case of a 52-year-old female with synovial sarcoma of the uterine corpus. Grossly, the partly polypoid tumor involved the endometrium with invasion into the inner half of the myometrium. Histologically, the tumor showed biphasic structure with the predominance of poorly differentiated small to medium sized round to oval cells. These cells showed high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio and were arranged in diffuse sheets. Other component consisted of larger epitheloid cells with ample eosinophilic cytoplasm arranged in irregular nests. These cells were only present in a small amount. Immu

Synovial sarcoma of the cauda equina.

Primary synovial sarcoma originating from the cauda equina is extremely rare. Only one case, involving an 11-year-old girl, has been reported. The authors describe the case of a 23-year-old woman with a primary synovial sarcoma of the cauda equina. The patient visited a local hospital and described a 2-month history of low-back pain. She was referred to the authors' hospital for further evaluation. On physical examination, she had a straight-leg raising result of 70° bilaterally. Motor examination revealed Grade 4/5 strength in the bilateral extensor hallux longus muscles. There was normal sen

Primary synovial sarcoma of the kidney.

Primary synovial sarcoma arising from the kidney is extremely rare. We report two cases with primary renal synovial sarcoma. Both were initially diagnosed as renal cell carcinoma. The first case was a 30-year-old woman who presented with right flank soreness. Ultrasonography disclosed a multiloculated cystic tumor measuring 9 x 7 cm. She underwent hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy; there was no recurrence during 15 months of follow-up. The second case was a 49-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen of 1 month's duration. Compute

Synovial sarcoma in an Ayrshire heifer.

An 8-month-old Ayrshire heifer had a rapidly growing mass in the axillary region of the left thoracic limb. The mass surrounded the distal humerus and entrapped nerves of the brachial plexus, causing an abnormal gait. Histologically, the mass was composed of clusters and cords of round to polygonal cells with scattered, spindle-shaped cells. The neoplastic cells stained positively for vimentin and cytokeratin. No staining was found with S-100 protein, kappa and lambda light chains, or T-cell markers by immunohistochemistry. On electron microscopic evaluation, the cytoplasm of the neoplastic ce

Pulmonary Synovial Sarcoma: An Unpleasant Surprise.

UNLABELLED: The authors describe the case of a patient with primary monophasic pulmonary synovial sarcoma presenting as a right pleural effusion, and discuss the underlying diagnostic challenges. LEARNING POINTS: There has been tremendous progress in the diagnosis and management of malignant effusion, with thoracoscopic biopsy of the pleura providing the highest diagnostic yield.Even though advanced techniques such as image-guided biopsy and pleuroscopy have relatively high sensitivity and specificity, in rare cases, the diagnosis can still be missed. In clinical practice, all such techniques

Primary Pleuropulmonary Synovial Sarcoma: A Case.

Primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma is extremely rare. The diagnosis can only be made after having eliminated an extrapleuropulmonary localization in the past and at the time of diagnosis. Our presentation is about a 40-year-old woman having a cough and dyspnea since three weeks ago; imaging had showed a left pleurisy with pleuropulmonary process. Histological study of the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma. PET-SCAN had not identified any extrathoracic localization. This tumor is known for its aggressive nature and high risk of metastasis. Its primitive ch

[One cases of nasal synovial sarcoma].

Synovial sarcoma is a rare tumour found in soft tissue; it is a mesenchymal spindle cell tumour that is not related to the synovial membrane. This tumour has a low incidence, and the most frequent place of occurrence is the lower extremities in young adults. Synovial sarcoma of the head and neck accounts for 3%-5% of sarcomas in this anatomical region. The tumor in the nasal cavity is less than 1%. The treatment of choice for synovial sarcoma of the head and neck is complete surgical excision of the tumour mass followed by adjuvant radiotherapy.

Primary intravascular synovial sarcoma: case report.

Synovial sarcoma (SS), a mesenchymal spindle cell tumor, displays variable epithelial differentiation, including glandular formation, and features a specific chromosomal translocation, t(X;18)(p11;q11). SS accounts for 5% to 10% of soft-tissue sarcomas. These tumors occur mostly in the joints, especially near the knee, but they also occur in other locations. Primary intravascular SS (IVSS) are extremely rare; only 6 well-documented cases have been reported in the English literature. We describe a new case of primary IVSS of the superior vena cava (SVC) in a 16-year-old boy. A transthoracic ech

Biphasic synovial sarcoma in mandibular region.

The term synovioma was coined by Smith in 1927, and later in 1936 Knox suggested the name synovial sarcoma. It occurs primarily in the paraarticular regions, usually in close association with tendon sheaths, bursae, and joint capsules. On rare occasions it may be seen in areas without any apparent relationship to synovial structures as in parapharyngeal region or the abdominal cavity. The first description of synovial sarcoma in the head and neck region was by Pack and Ariel in 1950. The majority of these tumors seem to take origin from paravertebral connective tissue spaces and manifest as so
