Visualization of time-resolved scattered radiation distribution in a computed tomography room utilizing a semiconductor survey meter.

In diagnostic computed tomography (CT), radiological technologists and assisting staff may need to remain inside the CT room during patient assistance. Understanding temporal changes in scattered radiation distribution is therefore important for reducing occupational exposure. Conventional measurements mainly provide instantaneous dose rates or accumulated doses and are less suited to intuitively capturing temporal changes during CT scanning. This study conducted a fundamental investigation of a visualization approach, defined as dynamic dose distribution (DDD), based on time-resolved air kerm

Radiation dose reduction in newborns without anti-scatter grids in fluoroscopy: A whole-body phantom study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether removing the anti-scatter grid (ASG) in fluoroscopy can reduce entrance surface dose (ESD) at anatomical locations corresponding to eyes, thyroid, lungs, heart, abdomen, and genitals inside and outside the fluoroscopic shutter, while maintaining the visibility of peripherally inserted central catheters (PI catheters), nasogastric tubes, and diluted contrast agents in the digestive tract. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dosimetric, visual, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and dose efficiency (CNR2/dose) assessments were performed using a newborn whole-body phantom under ra

Limiting Exposure to Scattered Radiation From a CT System Installed in a Two-Sided Deployable ISO-Shelter.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic radiology in the deployed military environment (in-theater diagnostic radiology) was greatly improved in the early 1990s with the addition of CT systems installed in military-grade one-sided expandable ISO-shelters. These shelters were provided with limited radiation shielding by several flexible lead curtains covering only a small portion of the shelter walls, necessitating placement of deployed CT systems at substantial distances from the field medical facility to limit exposures to personnel from secondary radiation. The newest generation deployable CT system is hou

The effective dose due to scattered radiation at patients during primary osteosynthesis; a multicenter prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVES: During osteosynthesis of a fracture patients are exposed to the primary radiation of an X-ray image and scattered (secondary) radiation. The primary objective was to measure the amount of scattered radiation at the thyroid, breast tissue, and gonads of patients undergoing primary osteosynthesis of acute fractures. The secondary objective was to calculate the effective dose caused by scattered radiation. METHODS: In this multicenter prospective observational case series patients undergoing a primary osteosynthesis of an acute fracture of hand/wrist, shoulder, ankle, knee, or hip we

Phantom study of a self-shielded X-ray bone age assessment instrument against scattered radiation in children.

Hand-wrist radiography is the most common and accurate method for evaluating children's bone age. To reduce the scattered radiation of radiosensitive organs in bone age assessment, we designed a small X-ray instrument with radioprotection function by adding metal enclosure for X-ray shielding. We used a phantom operator to compare the scattered radiation doses received by sensitive organs under three different protection scenarios (proposed instrument, radiation personal protective equipment, no protection). The proposed instrument showed greater reduction in the mean dose of a single exposure

Doses in eye lens, thyroid, salivary glands, mammary glands, and gonads, due to radiation scattered in dental orthopantomography.

In the aim to support treatments and diagnostics in Dentistry the most common radiographies are the periapical radiography and the dental panoramic. In the dental panoramic the X-ray beam is addressed into a large zone of the face obtaining the image of the upper and lower jaw. In this procedure part of the X-rays are scattered reaching some other parts of the patient body. In this work the absorbed dose in the eye lens, thyroid, salivary glands, mammary glands, and gonads, was measured in patients undergoing a dental orthopantomography. Measurements were carried out with thermolmuminiscent do

Comparison of X-ray image quality and scattered radiation among portable, mobile, and stationary X-ray machines.

Chest radiography is a sensitive method for tuberculosis (TB) detection, and portable X-ray systems offer a practical solution for community-based screening. However, whether the image quality of portable systems is diagnostically comparable to that of mobile and stationary systems remains insufficiently addressed. This study compared image quality and ambient dose equivalent H*(10) per radiographic exposure across one portable, three mobile, and three stationary X-ray systems. Image quality was evaluated using a test object for radiography (TOR) contrast-detail phantom at acrylic thicknesses

Assessment of scattered and leakage radiation from ultra-portable X-ray systems in chest imaging: An independent study.

Ultraportable (UP) X-ray devices are ideal to use in community-based settings, particularly for chest X-ray (CXR) screening of tuberculosis (TB). Unfortunately, there is insufficient guidance on the radiation safety of these devices. This study aims to determine the radiation dose by UP X-ray devices to both the public and radiographers compared to international dose limits. Radiation dose measurements were performed with four UP X-ray devices that met international criteria, utilizing a clinically representative CXR set-up made with a thorax phantom. Scatter and leakage radiation dose were me

Fourier-Stokes polarimetry of laser radiation scattered fields for diagnostics of dystrophic changes of biological tissues histological sections.

The optical model of polycrystalline networks of histological sections of rectum wall is suggested. The results of investigating the interrelation between the values of statistical (statistical moments of the 1st-4th order) and correlation (cross correlation coefficients) parameters are presented. Such parameters characterize the coordinate distributions of the fourth parameter of the Stokes vector of Fourier transforms of laser images of myometrium tissues. The diagnostic criteria of myometrium pathologies are determined.

X-ray scattering and multivariate analysis for classification of organic samples: a comparative study using Rh tube and synchrotron radiation.

This work compares the performance of X-ray tube induced and synchrotron induced energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence in generating scattering profiles when organic samples are irradiated. In the first case, this effect produces sharper peaks, well defined in the spectra, whereas synchrotron-induced scatter are seen as broad bands. These effects may be used for classifying simple materials like graphite, coke, activated carbon and carbon nanotubes, all having the same composition but different structures, using multivariate data analysis. In a second sample set, the method was applied to liqui

Scatter radiation effects of titanium osteosynthesis plates in mandibular reconstruction: An experimental 3D-printed phantom and cell culture study.

Mandibular reconstruction with fibula free flaps commonly requires fixation using titanium osteosynthesis plates. In patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy, scatter radiation effects from metallic hardware may alter dose distribution and affect biological responses, but systematic evidence remains limited. This experimental study examined the influence of plate geometry on scatter radiation and cell proliferation. A three-dimensional printed mandibular phantom, generated from patient CT data and combined with a water phantom, was used to simulate clinical irradiation conditions. Irradiation

Analysis of dose distribution around a computed tomography scanner in terms of exposure to scattered ionizing radiation of caregivers of pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: During computed tomography (CT), a large amount of ionizing radiation is emitted to ensure high quality of the obtained radiological image. This study measured the dose distribution around the CT scanner and the exposure of people staying near the CT scanner during the examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The measurements used an anthropomorphic phantom to assess human exposure to ionizing radiation. The probability of inducing leukemia and other cancers as a result of absorbing doses recorded around the CT device was also calculated. RESULTS: The highest exposure to scattered radi

Active minimisation of radiation scatter during breast radiotherapy: management implications for young patients with good-prognosis primary neoplasms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy is used to reverse or prevent local tumour growth but is also a carcinogen in its own right. A recent audit of post-radiotherapy second malignancies in this institution revealed a striking preponderance of tumours originating near the outside edge of the treatment field. Since this finding suggests the existence of a critical subtherapeutic dose range predisposing to tumourigenesis, we attempted to define and reduce this radiation scatter dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We undertook a dosimetric review of 6 MV scatter from a linear accelerator in sites matchi

Physics-informed learning for end-to-end acoustic scattering of wavelength-order axisymmetric objects: From geometric profiles to acoustic radiation forces.

Theoretical computations of scattering fields and radiation forces for axisymmetric objects typically rely on coordinate mapping techniques to parameterize geometric features and coordinate transformations to enforce boundary conditions within a closed-form governing framework. However, these approaches often suffer from computational inefficiency. Here, we propose a two-stage physics-informed neural network framework that decomposes the cross-scale mapping task into two specialized sub-networks. The first stage, the physics-informed geometric mapping network, integrates conformal transformati

Dose assessment for the fetus considering scattered and secondary radiation from photon and proton therapy when treating a brain tumor of the mother.

The goal of this work was to determine the scattered photon dose and secondary neutron dose and resulting risk for the sensitive fetus from photon and proton radiotherapy when treating a brain tumor during pregnancy. Anthropomorphic pregnancy phantoms with three stages (3-, 6-, 9-month) based on ICRP reference parameters were implemented in Monte Carlo platform TOPAS, to evaluate the scattered dose and secondary neutron dose and dose equivalent. To evaluate the dose equivalent, dose averaged quality factors were considered for neutrons. This study compared three treatment modalities: passive s
