The respiratory sensation was studied in Nepal at four different altitudes, 1377 m before and after the ascension, 2800 m, 3900 m and 530 m. Dyspnea was noted at each altitude for the nine subjects. They had to rate 4 external resistive loads between 2.5 and 13 cm H2O.l-1.s, presented in 2 pairs, a low and a high one. The discrimination between the loads i.e. the subject's sensitivity was obtained from Sensory Decision Analysis. Noninvasive quantitative somatosensory tests were used to measure sensory perception thresholds on the faces of 26 patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. The affected divisions were determined by the presence of trigger zones. Elevations of thresholds of sensations subserved by both large- and small-diameter fibers were found both in the affected and in the unaffected adjacent divisions when compared with the healthy side. The findings are interpreted as further evidence of combined peripheral and central pathologic conditions in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

A series of 59 patients were examined for loss of corneal sensitivity. Thirty-five of them suffered from scleritis and 24 suffered from episcleritis. There was a difference between the 2 conditions in that significantly more patients with scleritis were affected than patients with episcleritis. It was also found that among the scleritis patients there was a close relationship between the number of quadrants affected and decrease in sensitivity. Olfactory networks, comprised of sensory neurons and interneurons, detect and process changes in the chemical environment to drive animal behavior. Recent studies combining genetics with behavioral analyses and imaging in worms, flies and mice have revealed new insights into the mechanisms of olfaction. In this discussion, we focus on three interesting findings. First, sensory neuron responses to odor are modulated by neuropeptides. This modulation might serve to extend the range of responses of the sensory neurons and also to integrate internal state information into the chemosensory circuit.
