The adherence of Streptococcus sanguis to saliva-coated hydroxylapatite was markedly reduced by treatment of the cells with trypsin. In Scatchard plots of adherence data, protease-treated S. sanguis did not exhibit the characteristic positive slopes, suggesting that trypsin prevented cooperative interactions between the cells and artificial pellicle. Adult Onchocerca volvulus worms were extracted sequentially with buffers of various ionic strengths. The extract was incubated with purified human onchocerciasis immunoglobulin-G (IgG) convalently coupled to Sepharose. Antigens were then eluted with 8 M urea and 7.5 M guanidine-HCl. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in normal pregnancy and hydatidiform mole did not bind to the peanut agglutinin (PNA)-Sepharose column, whereas significant amount of hCG in choriocarcinoma adsorbed to the column. Therefore, PNA-Sepharose affinity chromatography is an effective tool for the detection of desialylated hCG and may be useful also for the diagnosis of choriocarcinoma.

Histamine insolubilized by chemical linkage via a protein or polypeptide carrier to Sepharose beads cannot penetrate cells. Even so, the resultant histamine-coated Sepharose binds leukocytes selectively. Despite the low molecular weight of histaminie, the binding is via preformed cell membrane receptors and can be specifically and competitively blocked or reversed by antihistamines.

Specificity of interaction between factors of contact phase of blood coagulation and noradrenaline was studied. Human blood plasma lost the capacity to contact activation after chromatography on a column with noradrenaline-Sepharose. High specificity in binding of factors of contact phase with ligand-noradrenaline, "utilization" of factor XII during interaction with the ligand, the high specific activity of factor XII bound to noradrenaline-Sepharose were observed.
