Precision silver nitrate cautery of the posterior nasal cavity.

BACKGROUND: This technical note describes a novel method of cauterising the posterior nasal cavity through the use of a plastic straw and silver nitrate. OBJECTIVE: This technique aims to prevent unwanted damage to surrounding nasal mucosa. METHODS: Once the nasal cavity has been prepared for cauterisation, the silver nitrate stick is navigated to the bleeding point covered by the plastic straw. The silver nitrate stick is then advanced onto the bleeding point allowing precise cauterisation of the nasal mucosa, without effecting surrounding healthy mucosa.

Silver nitrate cauterization: a treatment option for aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVES: In this study we compared silver nitrate cautery with placebo to assess the effect of silver nitrate cautery in aphthous stomatitis for pain relief and healing time. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, sixty-five patients with aphthous stomatitis were assessed. Silver nitrate sticks were used in group A (treatment group) and placebo sticks were used for group B (control group). Change in the severity of pain, change in the size of the ulcers, healing time, side effects of the procedure were assessed. RESULTS: Although the mean value of pain scores before the procedure was simila…

Unusual edge effect in patch testing with silver nitrate.

Silver nitrate is a widely used substance and has been applied topically for cauterizing bleeding and healing wounds. In the past it has even been used to mark patch test sites, when no one knew that the substance itself might be a sensitizer. However, there are also toxic reactions to that substance. We report a case in which a positive "edge effect" at the periphery of the patch test site could be shown. It can be explained by the unequal distribution of patch test solutions in the different patch test systems with a concentration at the rim. Distinguishing between allergic and toxic reactio…

Devastating complication of silver nitrate instillation for the treatment of chyluria.

The passage of milky white urine (chyluria) is an alarming sign. Safety and efficacy of silver nitrate instillation therapy for chyluria has been demonstrated in various studies in literature. Inspite of these, various serious complications following silver nitrate therapy have been reported from the regions where the pathology is prevalent. Even today, no protocol has been standardised for instillation therapy for chyluria about the ideal agent used, exact concentration or amount to be instilled, total number of instillations and doses per instillation to be administered. We presented a devas…

Treatment of 'vasomotor rhinitis' by the local application of silver nitrate.

A series of 52 patients were closely assessed prospectively to determine the effectiveness, untoward effects and patient acceptance of a new method of treatment of 'vasomotor rhinitis' by silver nitrate application. The patient's age ranged from 11 to 50 years except one who was 58 years old. The report describes the technique used and results obtained following the painting of the 'trigger area' of the nasal mucosa in patients with 'vasomotor rhinitis'. Each patient was evaluated regularly and the evaluation was based on both subjective response and clinical examination. Only cases who had rh…

Effect of Silver Nitrate Application on the Success of Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing additional procedures in endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (End-DCR) surgery and discuss the factors affecting the success of End-DCR surgery in light of relevant literature. METHODS: The study included 155 patients who underwent End-DCR surgery in our clinic due to epiphora. This was a prospective randomized, single-blind, controlled trial. Group I (control) included 54 patients who did not undergo silicone stent insertion or silver nitrate application, group II included 51 patients who underwent silicone stent inse…

The efficacy of silver nitrate cauterization for pyogenic granuloma of the hand.

PURPOSE: We report a series of pyogenic granulomas of the hand treated effectively in the office with silver nitrate cauterization. METHODS: Twelve patients with 13 pyogenic granulomas of the hand were treated. The average duration of symptoms was 2 months. Masses were removed bluntly, pressure was held proximal to the lesion to effect hemostasis, and the base of the lesion was cauterized with silver nitrate applicators. After treatment patients were instructed to keep the lesions absolutely dry for 2 weeks. RESULTS: Complete resolution of the pyogenic granuloma was achieved in 85% of patien…

Silver Nitrate Interpreted as Osseous Pathology on RadiographsTwo Case Reports.

Silver nitrate is often used topically for hemostasis. When radiography is performed after the application of silver nitrate, an artifact appears on the radiograph that may be mistaken for an abnormal calcification or a foreign body. The patients in the following two cases were treated with topical silver nitrate. In each case, radiographs taken after treatment seemed to demonstrate abnormal soft-tissue calcifications in the area of silver nitrate application. Subsequent clinical examination revealed no calcifications, and it was determined that the abnormal radiographic findings were silver n…

Silver nitrate cautery in aphthous stomatitis: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Aphthous stomatitis is a painful, recurrent disease of the oral mucous membrane. Silver nitrate sticks have been used for a long time to provide pain relief for the duration of an aphthous ulceration, with only one application. Silver nitrate causes chemical cauterization and increases the depth of injury. OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of chemical cautery with silver nitrate in reducing pain of aphthous ulceration and to determine if this treatment shortens or prolongs healing. METHODS: In a randomized, patient-blinded, placebo-controlled study, 97 patients with painful minor o…

Methemoglobinemia secondary to topical silver nitrate therapy--a case report.

Methemoglobinemia is a rare complication in individuals exposed to nitrates or nitrites. Whereas methemoglobinemia is a recognized potential complication in burn patients treated with topical 0.5% silver nitrate solution, no report of methemoglobinemia in burn patients has been present in the literature for more than 15 years. We raise consciousness about this complication with a case report of a 12-month-old child with necrotizing fasciitis resulting from a cutaneous flank infection. The patient developed cyanosis 20 days after initiation of topical treatment with 0.5% silver nitrate solution…
