Acne, Microbiome, and Probiotics: The Gut-Skin Axis.

The objective of this narrative review was to check the influence of the human microbiota in the pathogenesis of acne and how the treatment with probiotics as adjuvant or alternative therapy affects the evolution of acne vulgaris. Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease involving the pilosebaceous units. The pathogenesis of acne is complex and multifactorial involving genetic, metabolic, and hormonal factors in which both skin and gut microbiota are implicated. Numerous studies have shown the bidirectionality between the intestinal microbiota and skin homeostasis, a communication mainly es

Skin microbiome considerations for long haul space flights.

Dysbiosis of the human skin microbiome has long been associated with changes to the pH of the skin, dermal immune function and chronic skin conditions. Dermatological issues have been noted as the most prevalent medical presentation in the microgravity environment of space. The change in gravitational forces has been implicated in human immuno-suppression, also impacted by changes in the gastrointestinal-skin axis and its impact on Vitamin D metabolism, altered microbial gene expression in resident flora (leading changes in biofilm formation) and increased virulence factors in potential pathog…

Distinct skin microbiome community structures in congenital ichthyosis.

BACKGROUND: The ichthyoses are rare genetic keratinizing disorders that share the characteristics of an impaired epidermal barrier and increased risk of microbial infections. Although ichthyotic diseases share a T helper (Th) 17 cell immune signature, including increased expression of antimicrobial peptides, the skin microbiota of ichthyoses is virtually unexplored. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the metagenome profile of skin microbiome for major congenital ichthyosis subtypes. METHODS: Body site-matched skin surface samples were collected from the scalp, upper arm and upper buttocks of 16 healthy …

Skin Microbiome in Small- and Large-plaque Parapsoriasis.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins have been shown to promote lymphoma-associated immune dysregulation. This study examined changes in the skin microbiome of parapsoriasis compared with intact skin. Swab microbiome specimens were taken of the parapsoriasis lesions of 13 patients. Control samples were taken from contralateral healthy sides of the body. Microbiotas were characterized by sequencing the V1-V3 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial genes on the Illumina MiSeq platform. The most common genera in the microbiome data were Propionibacterium (27.13%), Corynebacterium (21.20%) and Staphyloco…

The skin microbiome: the overlooked axis in modern dermatology.

The skin microbiome plays a critical role in maintaining cutaneous barrier integrity, modulating immune responses, and influencing the expression of dermatologic disease, yet its integration into clinical practice remains limited. Microbial alterations have been described in conditions such as atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, psoriasis, and chronic wounds; however, uncertainty regarding causality, interindividual variability, and lack of methodological standardization have hindered clinical translation. Current diagnostic frameworks rarely incorporate microbial metrics, while antimicrobial th…

The cutaneous microbiome in skin cancer - A systematic review.

The overall incidence of skin cancer has risen over the past half a decade worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in molecular testing have allowed us to better characterize microbiome alterations in skin cancer. However, literature specific to skin microbiome and skin cancer remain heterogenous and scattered. A systematic review was performed to identify the existing literature and its usefulness in providing microbiome-based biomarkers. A search of the databases (PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, GoogleScholar) was conducted from June to July 2022 in acc…

The Skin Microbiome: A New Actor in Inflammatory Acne.

Our understanding of the role of Cutibacterium acnes in the pathophysiology of acne has recently undergone a paradigm shift: rather than C. acnes hyperproliferation, it is the loss of balance between the different C. acnes phylotypes, together with a dysbiosis of the skin microbiome, which results in acne development. The loss of diversity of C. acnes phylotypes acts as a trigger for innate immune system activation, leading to cutaneous inflammation. A predominance of C. acnes phylotype IA1 has been observed, with a more virulent profile in acne than in normal skin. Other bacteria, mainly Stap…

Alterations of the skin microbiome in HIV infection with pruritus.

INTRODUCTION: Pruritus is one of the main common symptoms of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Skin changes caused by scratching, or the absence of skin findings despite ongoing pruritus, impact patients' quality of life. With cutaneous HIV infection, pruritus is continuous, though it is unknown whether HIV infection affects the skin microbiota to cause pruritus. METHODS: The skin microbiomes and plasma of HIV infection with pruritus, HIV and healthy were investigated in this study. Swabs were taken from four body sites and the composition of the microbiome at those sites was asse…

Sex differences in the skin microbiome of burn scars.

Sex differences are observed in various spectrums of skin diseases, and there are differences in wound healing rate. Herein, sex differences were identified for the newly healed skin microbiome of burn patients. Fifty-two skin samples (26 normal skin, 26 burn scars) were collected from 26 burn patients (12 male, 14 female) and microbiota analysis was performed. The correlation between skin microbiota and biomechanical properties of burn scars was also investigated. There were no significant differences in clinical characteristics between male and female patients. Considering the biomechanical …

Role of the skin microbiota and intestinal microbiome in rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disorder of uncertain etiology that mainly affects the centrofacial region, including cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, and eyes. The pathogenesis of rosacea remains unclear because it involves several complex factors. Additionally, the potential treatment methods need to be explored. We reviewed the common bacterial species in the skin microbiota and gut microbiota of rosacea patients such as Demodex folliculorum, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus oleronius, Cutibacterium acnes, and Helicobacter pylori and identified their role in the pathogenesis. Evolving approaches to profiling the microbiome in skin disease.

Despite its harsh and dry environment, human skin is home to diverse microbes, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and microscopic mites. These microbes form communities that may exist at the skin surface, deeper skin layers, and within microhabitats such as the hair follicle and sweat glands, allowing complex interactions with the host immune system. Imbalances in the skin microbiome, known as dysbiosis, have been linked to various inflammatory skin disorders, including atopic dermatitis, acne, and psoriasis. The roles of abundant commensal bacteria belonging to Staphylococcus and Cutibacteri…

The Skin Microbiome and Its Role in Psoriasis: A Review.

The skin microbiome is made of various microorganisms, most of which have the function of protecting individuals from harmful pathogens, and they are involved in innate and adaptive immune responses. The skin acts as a physical and immunological barrier against external stimuli, including pathogens and physical damage. Changes in the composition of the skin microbiome can trigger inflammatory processes leading to inflammatory skin diseases in susceptible individuals. Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic inflammatory disease with a multifactorial etiology, where breakdown of immune tolerance to cutaneo…
