Emotional and Social Factors influence Poker Decision Making Accuracy.

Poker is a social game, where success depends on both game strategic knowledge and emotion regulation abilities. Thus, poker provides a productive environment for studying the effects of emotional and social factors on micro-economic decision making. Previous research indicates that experiencing negative emotions, such as moral anger, reduces mathematical accuracy in poker decision making. Furthermore, various social aspects of the game—such as losing against "bad players" due to "bad luck"—seem to fuel these emotional states. We designed an Internet-based experiment, where participants' (N = …

[Social factors and pathomorphosis of phobic disorders in adolescence].

Author studied 330 patients (265 boys and 65 girls), aged 15-17 years, with phobic disorders. The common trends of the sociogenic pathomorphosis of these disorders were revealed. The socially determined pathomorphosis of phobias in adolescence manifests itself in the appearance of new phobic objects, changes in subjects of phobias and frequencies of their types. Social phobic states, most vulnerable to environmental factors, that reached the level of psychopatologically completed syndromes were the most frequent (20.7% of all phobias). In their structure, there were fears of social interaction

Psycho-social factors loom large in development of CHD.

Why? Because new research suggests psycho-social components such as hostility are just as important as some traditional risk factors in predicting CHD.

Social cognitive factors in brain injury-associated personality change.

Often social difficulties are the most enduring difficulties after a head injury. The social deficits most frequently reported by relatives 6-12 months post-injury include egocentric styles of social interaction characterized by family members as a change in the head-injured patient's personality style. The described characteristics of head-injured patients in terms of social perspective-taking abilities are similar to those of children reported in the cognitive developmental literature. To demonstrate the nature of the social deficits in head-injured participants, social perspective-taking pa

[Social status and cardiovascular risk factors in Danish males].

In a prospective investigation of a cohort of 504 men from the population studies in Glostrup, the participants were examined at the ages of 40 and 51 years. On both of these occasions, the social status was investigated together with a series of cardiovascular risk factors. The main hypothesis of the investigation was that the risk of cardiovascular disease was greater the lower the social status. This hypothesis was confirmed as regards the following risk factors at the examination at the age of 51 years: Plasma-fibrinogen (p less than 0.001), low stature (p less than 0.001), smoking (p less

Social Factors Affecting Tracheoesophageal Prosthesis Abandonment: Restoring Every Voice.

BACKGROUND: Tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP), a one-way prosthetic valve, is considered the most effective method of voice restoration following total laryngectomy (TL) but requires specialized training, close follow-up management, and practice to achieve satisfactory speech and maximize longevity of the device. Because alternative communication methods (eg, writing, esophageal speech) remain available to patients with TEP, prosthesis abandonment (removal or discontinuing use for speech) is a well-known outcome. Considering the multifactorial nature of successful TEP speech, we examined corr

Familial Factors in the Development of Social Anxiety Disorder.

The purpose of the current article is to explore familial factors that influence the development of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in children and adolescents, including parenting, sibling relationships, and family environment. A multitude of interrelated genetic and familial factors have been found to cause and maintain SAD in children and adolescents. There are many challenges in diagnosing and treating the disorder. Knowledge and awareness of familial factors provide insight on targeted treatments that prevent or ameliorate SAD. [Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, 59

Perpetuating factors of social anxiety: a serial mediation model.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that individuals with high levels of social anxiety utilize more safety behaviours and experience more post-event processing than those with lower levels of social anxiety. There are also data to suggest that the relationship between safety behaviour use and social anxiety symptoms is mediated by perceived control of one's anxiety. Furthermore, it has been suggested that post-event processing influences anticipatory anxiety for a future social situation. AIM: A direct link between the perpetuating factors of social anxiety described above has not been established

Social ecological factors and intimate partner violence in pregnancy.

Knowledge of societal, community, family and individual related factors associated with IPV in pregnancy is limited in Ethiopia. Our study examined these factors in an Ethiopian context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted among pregnant women attending antenatal care at governmental health institutions, using a consecutive probability sampling strategy. A total of 720 pregnant women were interviewed by five trained nurses or midwives, using a standardized and /pretested

Reading development and impairment: behavioral, social, and neurobiological factors.

What are the cognitive and neurobiological building blocks necessary for children to acquire literacy, a skill that is crucial for academic and life achievement? In this review we discuss the behavioral and neurobiological evidence concerning the bases of reading development and impairment. The means by which reading achievement may be influenced by the background and experiences that a child brings to the classroom are discussed. Finally, we review a series of experimental studies that have examined the cognitive and neurobiological response prior to and following reading intervention in stru

Social class and cardiovascular risk factors in Danish men.

During the last 25 years, a series of epidemiological studies in North-Western Europe and U.S.A. have demonstrated a negative association between social class and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), that is, an increasing incidence the lower the social class. In studies where possible explanations of this negative gradient have been analyzed, it was concluded that the traditional individual risk factors, such as elevated blood pressure, high serum cholesterol, and smoking, could explain about one half of the differences demonstrated. In a prospective study of a cohort of 504 men fro
