Sheltered Care Facility Size and the Social Integration of Mentally Ill Adults.

This paper examines the effects of facility size on the social integration of mentally ill residents in community-based sheltered care homes. Big facilities have come to be associated with many problems (documented and otherwise) related to residential housing for mentally ill adults. However, this image of large, impersonal, and overly restrictive living environments is often not substantiated by the empirical research on sheltered care. Indeed, the present study of sheltered care homes in California finds a much more complex and varied situation. It suggests that homes of all sizes may offer…

Social Accountability in Medical Student Scholarly Projects: A Call for Intentional Integration.

BACKGROUND: While social accountability is integrated into clinical training at many institutions, its role in medical scholarly projects remains unexplored. While much has been studied on social accountability in medical education and service, little is known about how it is approached in research. Therefore, we examined whether community partnerships were included in student plans, the community's role in the research process, and health equity outcomes as measures of social accountability. METHODS: We approached this observational study in two stages. In stage 1, we reviewed medical studen

Integration of Multiple Social Cues in Williams Syndrome: Neural and Behavioral Evidence.

The study examined whether the social phenotype in Williams syndrome (WS) arises from atypical perception, attention, or executive function. Adults with WS (n=30) and neurotypical controls (n=32) completed a "Mind Reading" task requiring integration of facial emotions and gaze direction to infer desirability of concurrently presented objects. Participants with WS succeeded on direct gaze trials but performed near chance when disengagement from gaze direction was required. Perceptual (N170), attentional (P3), and emotional (LPP) neural response patterns were comparable between the groups. The d

Audiovisual integration of faces and voices in Chinese individuals with social anxiety.

In our daily lives, we perceive the emotions of others usually through a variety of modalities such as faces, voices, gestures, etc. However, very few studies have investigated the multisensory integration of emotional information. In the current study, we aimed to explored the audiovisual integration of faces and voices in individuals with social anxiety. In Experiment 1, individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and healthy controls (HCs) participated in an emotion categorisation task using static angry and happy faces and voices. The results showed that for angry emotion, compared to a

Age integration in the social convoys of young and late midlife adults.

Homophily on the basis of age is a notable characteristic of social convoys across the life course. Ties to older and younger persons, therefore, are both unusual and potentially provide unique social support resources. This study examined relationships with older, younger, and same-aged non-kin ties among young and late midlife adults. Data came from the University of California Berkeley Social Networks Study (UCNets), a sample of 485 people aged 21-30 and 674 people aged 50-70. A majority of non-kin ties were to people whose age was within 5 years of the participant's own age, although the m

The effect of social integration on outcomes after major lower extremity amputation.

OBJECTIVE: Major lower extremity (MLE) amputation is a common procedure that results in a profound change in a patient's life. We sought to determine the association between social support and outcomes after amputation. We hypothesized that patients with greater social support will have better post amputation outcomes. METHODS: From November 2011 to May 2013, we conducted a cross-sectional, observational, multicenter study. Social integration was measured by the social integration subset of the Short Form Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique. Systemic social support was assessed …

Social integration, psychological distress, and smoking behaviors in a midwest LGBT community.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations have smoking rates twice that of their heterosexual counterparts. To design effective outreach, prevention, and treatments for these individuals, a comprehensive understanding of associated factors is needed. OBJECTIVE: To increase understanding of how social integration and psychological distress are related to smoking behaviors among LGBT populations. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, descriptive study of 135 LGBT adults using an online data collection strategy. Multivariate analyses were performed to examine factors associate…

Multimodal user interfaces to improve social integration of elderly and mobility impaired.

Technologies for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Communication have evolved tremendously over the past decades. However, citizens such as mobility impaired or elderly or others, still face many difficulties interacting with communication services, either due to HCI issues or intrinsic design problems with the services. In this paper we start by presenting the results of two user studies, the first one conducted with a group of mobility impaired users, comprising paraplegic and quadriplegic individuals; and the second one with elderly. The study participants carried out a set of tasks with

Prediagnosis social support, social integration, living status, and colorectal cancer mortality in postmenopausal women from the women's health initiative.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated associations between perceived social support, social integration, living alone, and colorectal cancer (CRC) outcomes in postmenopausal women. METHODS: The study included 1431 women from the Women's Health Initiative who were diagnosed from 1993 through 2017 with stage I through IV CRC and who responded to the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support survey before their CRC diagnosis. We used proportional hazards regression to evaluate associations of social support (tertiles) and types of support, assessed up to 6 years before diagnosis, with overall and CRC-specific mo…

Social implications of obstetric fistula: an integrative review.

Obstetric fistula is a devastating complication of obstructed labor that affects more than two million women in developing countries, with at least 75,000 new cases every year. Prolonged pressure of the infant's skull against the tissues of the birth canal leads to ischemia and tissue death. The woman is left with a hole between her vagina and bladder (vesicovaginal) or vagina and rectum (rectovaginal) or both, and has uncontrollable leakage of urine or feces or both. It is widely reported in scientific publications and the media that women with obstetric fistula suffer devastating social cons

Integrating social learning and network formation for social tipping towards a sustainable future.

Numerous psychological biases shape how we respond to observing others conforming to or diverging from social norms. Depending on our social networks, we may be more influenced by societal majorities, such as the widespread consumption of meat or frequent air travel, or by the sustainable lifestyles of our closest friends. The evolution of social norms is shaped by personal preferences, values, beliefs, and the structure of social networks. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for promoting a cultural shift towards sustainability, yet our grasp of how normative transformations occur remains

Social integration and mortality across the life course: findings from the Tromsø study.

CONTEXT: Poor social relationships have been associated with increased mortality risk. Configurations of social relationships vary across the life course, affecting the association with mortality. We investigated the relationship between social integration and mortality in four age groups and to examine three blocks of potential intermediate variables. METHODS: Tromsø Study wave 4 and 6 data and mortality events in the Norwegian Population Registry were linked. A three-level (low, medium, high) social integration index (SII) was constructed from scores to three related items: social participa…

[Social integration of long-term paraphrenic patients with low-dose depot neuroleptic medication].

All long-term patients with the diagnosis "paraphrenia systematica" out of one region were included in this study. 53 patients were treated in an in-patient psychiatric unit between 1979 and 1981 and were available in this study. Parenteral Fluphenacin-Decanoate (25-75 mg monthly) was given. Before, during and after Fluphenacin (each schedule lasting for at least 20 weeks) psychopathological and social evaluations were done. We used quantitative scales: NGI (Nurses Global Impressions) and BPRS (Brief psychiatric Rating Scale). Good Socialization showed a striking correlation to parenteral Flup

Moral fixations: The role of moral integrity and social anxiety in the selective avoidance of social threat.

People derive their sense of belonging from perceptions of being a moral person. Research moreover suggests that social cues of rejection rapidly influence visual scanning, and result in avoidant gaze behavior, especially in socially anxious individuals. With the current eye-tracking experiment, we therefore examined whether moral integrity threats and affirmations influence selective avoidance of social threat, and how this varies with individual differences in social anxiety. Fifty-nine participants retrieved a memory of a past immoral, moral, or neutral act. Next, participants passively vie

The Cost of Social Integration: Distinct Neural Inefficiency in Autistic Children Underlies Symptom Severity.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, as individuals with ASD process social cues like gestures and facial expressions in a unique way. Despite this knowledge, the exact neurophysiological mechanisms driving these differences and their direct impact on clinical symptoms remain unclear. This study delves deeper into understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms involved in social cue integration, moving beyond mere behavioral observations. Specifically, we investigated how autistic children and typically developing (TD) peers process congruent

State of the art: understanding and integration of the social context in diabetes care.

We review the past 25 years of research addressing challenges people living with diabetes experience in their daily lives related to social contexts, i.e. in their family, at work and in society at large, and identify research gaps. We found that young people with diabetes, as they develop through to adulthood, are exposed to considerable risks to their physical and mental health. Family-system interventions have had mixed outcomes. Research in this area would benefit from attention to ethnic/cultural diversity, and involving fathers and other family members. In adults with diabetes, social su
