Community and social participation among adults with mobility impairments: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Community and social participation is a complex phenomenon that is influenced by personal and environmental factors and is linked to a good quality of life and well-being. Individuals with mobility impairments are at risk of experiencing limitations in participating in community activities due to a wide range of factors. OBJECTIVE: To understand community participation as defined by adults with mobility impairments and to examine relationships among factors that influence community participation. METHODS: A mixed-methods study design was used. In-depth interviews of 13 adults wit

Dichotomous "Good Outcome" Indicates Mobility More Than Cognitive or Social Quality of Life.

OBJECTIVE: Worthwhile interventions for intracerebral hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage generally hinge on whether they improve the odds of good outcome. Although good outcome is correlated with mobility, correlations with other domains of health-related quality of life, such as cognitive function and social functioning, are not well described. We tested the hypothesis that good outcome is more closely associated with mobility than other domains. DESIGN: We defined "good outcome" as 0 through 3 (independent ambulation or better) versus 4 through 5 (dependent) on the modified Rankin Scale

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

Social mobility and class segregation in personal networks over time: evidence from longitudinal data.

This study examines how class-based network homogeneity evolves over time and whether intragenerational social mobility reshapes personal network composition in Chile. Drawing on four waves of longitudinal data from the Chilean Longitudinal Social Survey (ELSOC, 2016-2023), we assess the extent to which class stability and different forms of social mobility-conjunctural, structural, and cumulative-influence the degree of class homogeneity in personal networks. We use the position generator instrument to measure cross-class social ties across 13 occupations, calculating the proportion of ties b…

Social Support Network and Sedentary Behavior Among US Adults With and Without Mobility Impairment.

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that sedentary behavior is increased among those with mobility impairment, but the evidence examining the impact of social support networks (SSN) on this relationship remains limited. This study examines the relationship between SSN and sedentary behavior among adults with and without mobility impairment. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2008. SUBJECTS: U.S. adults (≥40 years of age) with (n = 962) and without (n = 1393) mobility impairment. MEASURES: The Social Support Network (SSN) score was create

Fatigue after stroke: relationship to mobility, fitness, ambulatory activity, social support, and falls efficacy.

Fatigue is common and persistent in stroke survivors, yet it is not known how mobility deficits, fitness, or other factors, such as social support, relate to fatigue severity, or whether subjective fatigue contributes to reduced ambulatory activity. The severity of fatigue in a sample of 53 community-dwelling subjects with chronic hemiparetic stroke was examined, and relationships among fatigue and mobility deficit severity, cardiovascular-metabolic fitness, ambulatory activity, social support, and self-efficacy for falls were identified. Measures included the Fatigue Severity Scale, timed 10-

Childhood language ability predicts intergenerational persistence and social mobility in socioeconomic status of adults.

This study examined early language abilities as a mediator of intergenerational socioeconomic status (SES). In a 30-year longitudinal study (N = 114, 98% White, 53% male, monolingual English speakers), participants were tracked from kindergarten to age 36 with measures of language, nonverbal IQ, academic achievement, and SES. Early language ability, independent of IQ, explained nearly a quarter (24%) of adult SES variance through two pathways. The persistence pathway (7.8%) showed language mediated 66% of intergenerational SES transmission. The mobility pathway (16.1%) showed language predicte

Patterns of Residential Mobility by Social Vulnerability Among Individuals With Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Area-level factors such as neighborhood poverty affect the health of individuals with rheumatic conditions. The connection of area-level data with health data via electronic health records (EHR) often relies upon the most recent patient address. We investigated longitudinal address history to understand mobility to areas with differing degrees of social vulnerability. METHODS: We identified individuals with rheumatic or musculoskeletal conditions receiving rheumatology care in a multihospital health care organization (2019-2024) in this cohort study. We geocoded available addresses

Compounding social-ecological crises drive spatial mobility and land abandonment in Morocco's High Atlas.

Drought and water insecurity are escalating crises that shape dryland farmers' mobility and land abandonment decisions. In this study, we appraised the causes of such decisions through 75 qualitative interviews and six group discussions with residents of rural Amazigh communities in Morocco's High Atlas. We identified a multi-faceted crises nexus, where water scarcity exacerbates economic and value-related crises and personal insecurities, leading to a crisis of confidence in traditional rural lifeways. Increasingly multi-local household structures and intersectional attributes mediate actors'

Exploring Transportation Challenges and Opportunities for Mobility-Vulnerable Populations Through the Social-Ecological Model.

Community mobility is a vital activity of daily living. Mobility-vulnerable populations-individuals with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and older adults-face transit disparities. Advanced technologies (e.g., ride-sharing) may mitigate transportation inequities, but limited evidence considers mobility-vulnerable populations. Utilizing the social-ecological model, the team examined challenges and opportunities associated with transportation availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability, and adaptability among two socioeconomic

Effects of social class differences and social mobility on growth in height, weight and body mass index in a British cohort.

By longitudinally linking follow-up restudies of the National Child Development Study it has been possible to examine not only the well-known association of social class with the size of the child, but also with longitudinal growth, and, in addition the effect of social mobility on growth. The relation of type of occupation of the male head of household to height and weight of the child is seen at all ages (7, 11 and 16) but class influence on growth from 7 years onward is minimal. Social mobility is a significant factor especially in relation to stature but is not significantly related to gro…

Influence of Problematic Mobile Phone Use on Social and Assertiveness Skills in Adolescents.

Smartphones have become the "backbone" of the connected society, reshaping social interactions in a period of adolescence marked by a neuropsychology vulnerability that is sensitive to intensive technological mediation. This study analyzes the relationship between problematic mobile phone use and the social and assertiveness skills of adolescents. Through a cross-sectional design, the answers of 1864 adolescents aged between 11 and 21 years old from education centers located in Cordoba (Spain) were analyzed, through a questionnaire that collected sociodemographic variables, the MPPUSA scale, t

PretermConnect: Leveraging mobile technology to mitigate social disadvantage in the NICU and beyond.

Preterm birth (PTB) - delivery prior to 37-weeks gestation - disproportionately affects low-income and minority populations and leads to substantial infant morbidity and mortality. The time following a PTB represents an optimal window for targeted interventions that encourage mothers to prioritize their own health and that of their babies. Healthcare teams can leverage digital strategies to address maternal and infant needs in this postpartum period, both in the neonatal intensive care unit and beyond. We therefore developed PretermConnect, a mobile app designed to educate, engage, and empower

Mobile HIV Testing Through Social Networking Platforms: Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Improving HIV screening in key populations is a crucial strategy to achieve the goal of eliminating AIDS in 2030. Social networking platforms can be used to recruit high risk-taking men who have sex with men (MSM) to promote the delivery of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) as mobile HIV testing. Therefore, client recruitment and availability of mobile HIV testing through social networking platforms requires further evaluation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of targeting high risk-taking MSM and HIV case finding between two mobile HIV testing recru

Social mobilization for cholera prevention & control in India: Building on the existing framework.

Social mobilization is an important component of the delivery of vaccines and has to be carried out at different levels. It plays a very critical role in success of a campaign, as was shown by the Polio eradication program in India that was supported by SMNet, a platform created for the purpose. Learnings from this has been used for other vaccine deployments in India as well. In addition, there is a social mobilization effort for routine immunization. A guideline for social mobilization was created by UNICEF specifically for cholera vaccine use during Haiti epidemic in 2010. Since there is a n

Bringing HIV partner services into the age of social media and mobile connectivity.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of recent sex partners named by persons with sexually transmitted infections are not notified about their exposure despite attempts by public health officials. Although text messaging (texting) and Internet-based communications (dating Web sites, e-mail, etc) are used by a large segment of the public for regular communications, these tools have been underused for partner services (PS). METHODS: We augmented PS for HIV in New York City using texting and Internet-based means to contact persons for whom traditional information (landline telephone number, post

Virtual/Mobile Overdose Response in Canada: A Social Return on Investment Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The overdose epidemic continues to be one of the leading causes of death in North America and continues to contribute to high healthcare costs. Although harm reduction initiatives have significantly reduced the aforementioned costs, there is a dearth of evidence regarding overdose response hotlines and applications. We aim to evaluate the social return on investment from a payer perspective of one such overdose response hotline, Canada's National Overdose Response Service, and its implications for service users, service operators, the Canadian healthcare system, and program funders

Social mobilization, education, and prevention of the Ebola virus disease: A scoping review.

The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) remains a global public health concern with multiple outbreaks over the last five years. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the current state of knowledge on awareness, education, and community mobilization programs on EVD prevention. A comprehensive search strategy was executed in October 2021 across eight databases (APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, Global Health, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science). According to the PRISMA flow diagram, out of the 4815 studies generated by the search, 33 were retained for extraction and were included in this
