The effect of social identity on objective and perceived social support in groups.

The social identity approach posits that social identity fosters mutual social support within groups. However, prior research has relied almost exclusively on individual-level self-report measures, neglecting the mutuality of support and the group as a unit of analysis. This pre-registered one-factorial online experiment with three-person groups (N = 306 group members; N = 102 groups) examined how social identity shapes objective mutual support, perceived provided and received support and the perceived benevolence of received support. Following a pre-tested identity manipulation (N = 120), gro…

Measuring Perceived Social Support After Disaster: Development and Validation of the Perceived Social Support in Disasters Scale (PSSDS-28).

Background/Objectives: Measuring perceived social support after disaster remains an unresolved psychometric problem. Most instruments do not jointly capture the source of support (from whom it comes) and its function (how it operates). None has been validated in a disaster-survivor sample with retrospectively framed items. We developed and validated the Perceived Social Support in Disasters Scale (PSSDS-28), a 28-item measure integrating both dimensions. Methods: In Phase 1, a PRISMA 2020-guided systematic review; a two-round Delphi with eight experts, cognitive interviews (n = 12); and a pilo…

Social support, social constraint, and psychological adjustment in patients with colorectal cancer.

Cancer patients' social networks, particularly their spouses or romantic partners, can promote or undermine their psychological adjustment. This study examined the relative associations of partner social support and social constraint with patients' psychological adjustment and further tested gender's moderating role in these associations. Participants were 124 patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer (M age = 56.6 years, 34% female), who completed questionnaires on perceived spousal social support and social constraint, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction. Findings revealed that …

Associations among living alone, social support and social activity in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: We examined cross-sectional associations of living alone with social isolation among community-dwelling older adults in Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA. METHODS: Four hundred participants 65 years old and older were recruited in community group settings or by direct mail. Participants were queried for living status, social support, frequency of social activity, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, and health conditions. Social isolation was assessed by lack of social support and decreased frequency of social activity. Physical activity (PA) was measured via an acceleromete…

Interacting effects of receiving social control and social support during smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Social control and support have effects on smoking cessation, but are mostly examined separately. PURPOSE: Interacting effects of social control and support are investigated, hypothesizing synergistic effects. METHODS: In 99 smokers, received social control and emotional support (both smoking specific) were assessed 2 weeks before a quit date (T1); objectively verified abstinence and self-reported numbers of cigarettes smoked daily were assessed 6 weeks after baseline (T2). RESULTS: For both outcomes, associations with control (T1) were moderated by support (T1), but beneficial

Social support and social strain among husbands and wives: a multilevel analysis.

In response to recent calls in the literature for within-person examinations of social support processes over time, this study explores the relationships of spousal support, spousal strain, and well-being among husbands and wives, both within the same day and across days. Eighty-three couples were interviewed and completed a structured diary twice daily for 1 week. The results of multilevel hierarchical modeling suggest that both spousal support and spousal strain made significant, independent contributions to concurrent negative affect, although only spousal support was a significant predicto…

Perceived social support in the social distancing era: the association between circles of potential support and COVID-19 reactive psychopathology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic are risk factors for psychopathology, but psychosocial protective factors might play a crucial role in buffering the pathogenic effects of the outbreak. DESIGN: In the current study, we examined the association of inner resources and potential external sources of support for coping with the pandemic and related lockdowns to mental health during the pandemic, while controlling for sociodemographic variables as covariates. METHODS: We tested the model in a probability-based internet survey of a representative sample of the I

Virtual social support buffers stress response: An experimental comparison of real-life and virtual support prior to a social stressor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Face-to-face and text-based social support have been shown to attenuate stress responses in past studies. Yet as social interactions increasingly take place online by means of virtual humans, our objective was to examine whether different forms of social support (virtual vs. real) prior to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) would also decrease stress. Additionally, the effect on subsequent real-life social behaviors (helping and approach) was evaluated while controlling for affective states and social presence. METHODS: 56 participants were either supported by an a…

Social Isolation and Child Maltreatment Among Japanese Mothers: Focus on Loneliness, Social Support, and Social Cohesion.

Background/Objectives: Social isolation is a significant risk factor for child maltreatment. However, few studies have examined this relationship across multiple ecological levels, including neighborhood, family, and individual factors. This cross-sectional study operationalized social isolation using social cohesion, social support, and loneliness, and aimed to examine how their inter-relationships influence child maltreatment among Japanese mothers. Methods: Data were collected through an anonymous online survey of 330 Japanese mothers of children aged under six years, conducted April-May 20…

Social support and the course of bipolar disorder.

The current study prospectively examined the impact of social support on symptom severity and recovery from episodes in bipolar disorder, both as a direct influence and as a buffer of life events. Fifty-nine individuals with Bipolar I disorder were followed longitudinally with monthly symptom severity interviews. Social support was measured by the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List and the Interview Schedule for Social Interaction, and life events were assessed using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule. Individuals with low social support took longer to recover from episodes and were …

Life stress, illness and social supports.

Stress has been shown to lower resistance to disease and thus to have a significant effect on susceptibility to a variety of physical and psychological illnesses. A correlation has also been established between the degree of social stress and an individual's use of medical services. However, the majority of people do not respond to stress in these ways. Social supports (e.g. a caring family) seem to be an important protective factor against the effects of stress. Other mtethods of protection (meditation, relaxation response or learning specific coping skills) are also important, but have been …

[Developments in medical and social support for the disabled].

Legislation evolves regularly, simplifying procedures, providing assistance and broadening the range of beneficiaries. The allocation of unlimited benefits, access to healthcare and housing, the deconjugation of the disabled adult allowance and support for parenthood are just some of the measures that improve the daily lives of people with disabilities.

Social support in children with a chronic condition.

This study used a descriptive exploratory design to describe social support in children with a chronic condition and how children use social support in coping with everyday demands and demands related to their condition. Participants comprised 62 school-aged children (16 with diabetes, 16 with cystic fibrosis, 15 with spina bifida, and 15 with no chronic illness). Data were collected about their social-support networks, the support functions provided by the networks, and their satisfaction with support. The children also described the social support they received and their use of social suppor…

Support for the Supporter: Paternal Postpartum Loneliness and Social Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the postpartum period, fathers may be at risk of increased stress and loneliness, which may be offset or buffered by the provision of social support. This study aimed to explore fathers' postpartum experiences of loneliness, perceived stress, and social support. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to inform study design and analysis. Semistructured interviews were conducted to collect data from 12 fathers, living in the Republic of Ireland, who had an infant aged 6 months or younger. A grounded theory entitled "support for the supporter," describing fathers' experiences w…

Social Memory Biases and Borderline Personality Disorder Features: Relevance of Perceived Social Support.

Poor relationship quality common among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) may result, in part, from biased interpersonal decision-making. We examined memory biases for hypothetical interpersonal partner choices varying in the degree of familiarity. In Part 1 of our study, participants (n = 192) were asked to choose between novel or familiar partners based on lists of traits across six vignettes, and in Part 2, they completed a trait recognition task 36-60 hours later. Lower perceived social support was associated with a memory bias toward novel (over familiar) partners. BPD…

The social support and social network characteristics of smokers in methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown social support and social network variables to be important factors in smoking cessation treatment. Tobacco use is highly prevalent among individuals in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). However, smoking cessation treatment outcomes in this vulnerable subpopulation have been poor and social support and social network variables may contribute. METHODS: The current study examined the social support and social network characteristics of 151 MMT smokers involved in a randomized clinical trial of smoking cessation treatments. Participants were 50% women…
