Post-traumatic stress disorder has been designated as one of the signature wounds of the Iraq/Afghanistan war. Approximately 15% of returning service members have been diagnosed with PTSD and the numbers increase daily. As such, civilian social workers and other mental health professionals need to understand the diagnosis and how best to help those struggling with the disorder. An exploratory study was made to demonstrate the role, the work and the relationships of a full-time medical social worker in a group medical practice. Patients were seen on referral only, and a schedule for interview was developed for purposes of categorizing areas of social dysfunction. Fearing rejection, they develop unique defense systems against it. The new social worker must pass a rigorous period of testing before being trusted.
