A 86-year-old woman with left hemiparesis was admitted to our hospital. When visiting to our hospital, hemichorea appeared on her left extremities in an ambulance. She also had mild disturbance of consciousness, spatial disorientation, and sensory disturbance. Blood biochemical studies revealed mild renal failure. DWI MRI showed hyperintensities in the postcentral gyrus and a posterior part of the insula in the right hemisphere, but no signal changes in FLAIR. No lesions were detected in the basal ganglia. The DWI-FLAIR mismatch suggested acute cerebral infarction, and we performed intravenous

Functional mapping of the rat somatosensory cortex was performed with T2*-sensitized MRI using a forepaw electrical stimulation model in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized rats at 7 T under both normocapnia and mild hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia. A highly localized activation area, consistent with the known somatosensory cortical region, was detected in all seven animals studied during hypocapnia and in five of the same animals during normocapnia. Quantitatively, hypocapnia was found to significantly increase both the size of the fMRI activation area (3.4 +/- 0.6 mm2 versus 1.5 +/- 0.6 mm2 in…

Cortical reorganization occurs within the primary somatosensory and the primary motor cortex after amputation of the arm or forearm. Here we report on a patient showing cortical reorganization after amputation of his right index finger. Our findings indicate that the neural networks within the area of the amputated finger in the somatosensory cortex (SI) were invaded by neighbouring structures, i.e. of neural cell assemblies that subserve the thumb and middle finger of his right hand.

Selective attention enhances relevant sensory inputs while filtering out distractions, yet its layer-specific effects remain poorly understood. Here, we used microvascular-specific spin-echo BOLD fMRI at 7 T to investigate attentional modulation across cortical layers in the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) during finger and wrist stimulation. During passive, unattended stimulation, the middle and deep layers exhibited stronger signals than the superficial layer. In the attended finger region, attention significantly increased activity in the superficial layer, consistent with top-down …

Time-order error, a psychophysical phenomenon in which the duration in between successive stimuli alters perception, has been studied for decades by neuroscientists and psychologists. To date, however, the locus of these effects is unknown. We use intracortical microstimulation of somatosensory cortex in three humans with spinal cord injury as a tool to bypass initial stages of processing and restrict the possible locations that signals could be modified. Using a 2-interval forced choice amplitude discrimination paradigm, we first assessed the extent to which order effects are observed. Compar…

Disruption and consequent reorganization of central nervous system circuits following traumatic brain injury may manifest as functional deficits and behavioral morbidities. We previously reported axotomy and neuronal atrophy in the ventral basal (VB) complex of the thalamus, without gross degeneration after experimental diffuse brain injury in adult rats. Pathology in VB coincided with the development of late-onset aberrant behavioral responses to whisker stimulation, which lead to the current hypothesis that neurodegeneration after experimental diffuse brain injury includes the primary somato

PEc is an area defined on cytoarchitectural grounds, located in the posterior part of the superior parietal lobule of macaque brain (Pandya and Seltzer, 1982). The aim of this work was to assess whether passive somatosensory stimulation elicited responses in PEc neurons. Extracellular recordings were performed in three awake Macaca fascicularis. Passive somatosensory stimulation was performed in darkness, and eye movements were monitored continuously. Recording sites were assigned to different areas according to the cytoarchitectonic criteria described by Pandya and Seltzer (1982) and Luppino

Positron emission tomography (PET) measurements of brain blood flow were used to monitor changes in the human primary and secondary somatosensory cortices during the period when somatosensory stimuli were expected. In anticipation of either focal or innocuous touching, or localized, painful shocks, blood flow decreased in parts of the primary somatosensory cortex map located outside the representation of the skin area that was the target of the expected stimulus. Specifically, attending to an impending stimulus to the fingers produced a significant decrease in blood flow in the somatosensory z…

After upper limb deafferentation, adult macaques exhibit substantial reorganization of cortical somatosensory topography with enlargement of cortical areas responsive to facial stimuli. In the present study non-invasive magnetic source imaging technology has been used to map in detail the bilateral somatosensory homunculi in four neurologically normal controls and two upper arm amputees. Bilateral homuncular maps of normals and of the unaffected hemisphere of both amputees showed a wide hand area. The affected hemisphere of both amputees showed marked intrusion of facial representations into t

Visual and somesthetic cues are used for spatial processing in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) of the mammalian brain. In rats, somatic information collected by the mystacial whiskers is critically involved in constructing a neural representation of the external space. Here, we delineated the topography of the cortical pathway from the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) that may deliver vibrissal cues to PPC for spatial processing. For anterograde tracing, we made small injections of biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into SI barrel cortex. The injections in the regions directly above the sep…

The precise locations for Th and S1 neurons receiving OS information are reported here for the first time. Interestingly, all recorded nuclei encode modality both at the single neuron and population levels, with noxious stimulation …

The imagination of tactile stimulation has been shown to activate primary somatosensory cortex (S1) with a somatotopic specificity akin to that seen during the perception of tactile stimuli. Using fMRI and multivariate pattern analysis, we investigate whether this recruitment of sensory regions also reflects content-specific activation (i.e., whether the activation in S1 is specific to the mental content participants imagined). To this end, healthy volunteers (n = 21) either perceived or imagined three types of vibrotactile stimuli (mental content) while fMRI data were acquired. Independent of…

The present study aims to validate the applicability of infrared (IR) thermal imaging for the study of brain function through experiments on the rat barrel cortex. Regional changes in neural activity within the brain produce alterations in local thermal equilibrium via increases in metabolic activity and blood flow. We studied the relationship between temperature change and neural activity in anesthetized rats using IR imaging to visualize stimulus-induced changes in the somatosensory cortex of the brain. Sensory stimulation of the vibrissae (whiskers) was given for 10 s using an oscillating w…

We have previously reported that mGluR5 signaling via PLC-beta1 regulates the development of whisker patterns within S1 (barrel) cortex of mice (Hannan et al., 2001). However, whether these defects arise from the loss of postsynaptic mGluR5 signaling, and whether the level of mGluR5 is important for barrel formation, was not examined. Furthermore, whether mGluR5 regulates other developmental processes that occur before or after barrel development is not known. We now show that mGluR5 is present postsynaptically at thalamocortical synapses during barrel formation. In addition, Mglur5(+/-) mice

Recent behavioral studies have shown that viewing the stimulated body part can enhance tactile acuity. We examined effects of viewing the stimulated body part by using neuromagnetic source imaging. Study participants were covertly stimulated on their first digit (D1) while watching a video that showed a hand where D1 was stimulated. The video hand appeared in the region where the real hand would be expected. In addition, participants were stimulated on D1 without watching the video. The results demonstrated a shift of D1 to a more inferior position and an increase of the dipole strength of D1

Recent research indicates that areas of the primary somatosensory (SI) and primary motor cortex show massive cortical reorganization after amputation of the upper arm, forearm or fingers. Most of these studies were carried out months or several years after amputation. In the present study, we describe cortical reorganization of areas in the SI of a patient who underwent amputation of the traumatized middle and ring fingers of his right hand 10 days before cortical magnetic source imaging data were obtained. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields (SEF) to mechanical stimuli to the finger tips wer

OBJECTIVE: The location of the foot primary somatosensory area (SI) is puzzling in contrast to the parietal localization of the hand SI. Electrical cortical stimulation studies have revealed the foot somatosensory function in the paracentral lobule anterior and posterior to the central sulcus (CS). A recent study of intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) using posterior tibial nerve (PTN) stimulation revealed frontal localization of the foot SI. However, most previous studies using scalp SEPs and somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) for PTN found that the initial cortical

Recent studies have indicated somatosensory cortex involvement in motor learning and retention. However, the nature of its contribution is unknown. One possibility is that the somatosensory cortex is transiently engaged during movement. Alternatively, there may be durable learning-related changes which would indicate sensory participation in the encoding of learned movements. These possibilities are dissociated by disrupting the somatosensory cortex following learning, thus targeting learning-related changes which may have occurred. If changes to the somatosensory cortex contribute to retentio…

Since the pioneering work of Penfield and his colleagues in the 1930s, the somatosensory cortex, which is located on the postcentral gyrus, has been known for its central role in processing sensory information from various parts of the body. More recently, a converging body of literature has shown that the somatosensory cortex also plays an important role in each stage of emotional processing, including identification of emotional significance in a stimulus, generation of emotional states, and regulation of emotion. Importantly, studies conducted in individuals suffering from mental disorders …
