Sonic detection of intracranial aneurysm and AVM.

This paper describes a method of detecting intracranial aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation (AVM) by analysing weak sounds produced by the blood circulation at the affected part. There is thought to be no turbulence in the normal cerebrovascular system, whereas abnormalities such as aneurysm and AVM sometimes cause turbulence in the blood flow. Thus, a small fraction of the flow energy might be converted into an acoustically detectable noise. For the detection of the sound, sensitive detectors must be applied close to the head since the sound is very weak, and, as in cerebrovascular diseas

Improved colony forming unit recovery from aggregating lactobacilli via mild probe sonication.

Colony forming unit (CFU)-based enumeration of culturable bacterial populations is essential for microbiological research, probiotic quality control, and regulatory compliance. However, this is compromised in highly aggregative lactobacilli strains because individual viable cells within an aggregate often coalesce to produce a single colony. This study evaluated physical and chemical strategies to enhance CFU recovery by dispersing bacterial aggregates while preserving bacterial membrane integrity. Probe sonication, bath ultrasonication, and treatments with sodium chloride (NaCl), lithium chlo…

Debunking top-down borophene: a multimodal reassessment of boron sonication and milling.

The rapid growth of reports claiming the top-down synthesis of free-standing borophene from boron has generated substantial ambiguity regarding the true nature of the resulting materials. Here, representative sonication- and milling-based processing routes were investigated through multimodal structural, chemical, and optical characterization. Boron powders were treated by bath sonication in water, hydrogen peroxide, dimethylformamide, and isopropanol, as well as by ball milling under air and argon atmospheres. In all cases, no evidence of known borophene polymorphs was observed. Instead, the …

ASAP─Automated Sonication-Free Acid-Assisted Proteomes─from Cells and FFPE Tissues.

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues are an invaluable resource for retrospective studies, but protein extraction and subsequent … s remain complex and are not readily scalable. Here, we present an optimized workflow for automated sonication-free acid-assisted proteome (ASAP) extraction from FFPE sections. ASAP enables efficient protein extraction from FFPE specimens, achieving similar proteome coverage as established methods using expensive sonicators, resulting in reduced sample proce …

Development of a Low-Frequency Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Transducer for Biological Tissue Sonication.

The safety of ultrasound exposure is very important for a patient's well-being. High-frequency (1-10 MHz) ultrasound waves are highly absorbed by biological tissue and have limited therapeutic effects on internal organs. This article presents the results of the development and application of a low-frequency (20-100 kHz) ultrasonic transducer for sonication of biological tissues. Using the methodology of digital twins, consisting of virtual and physical twins, an ultrasonic transducer has been developed that emits a focused ultrasound signal that penetrates into deeper biological tissues. For t…

Usefulness of sonication procedure in mesh infection diagnosis associated with hernia repair.

BACKGROUND: The use of prosthetic meshes is a common practice in hernia repair surgery. However, infection can appear as an important complication where antibiotic selection must be directed by the etiology of the infection. In recent years, sonication has appeared as an important tool for the diagnosis of many biomaterial-associated infections. Here, we evaluated our experience with this methodology for the diagnosis of mesh infection. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the microbiological records between 2015 and 2019 looking for sonicated meshes in the microbiology laboratory. All sample…

Sonication in Patients With Spinal Cord Stimulation: A New Approach for Infection Diagnostics.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) offers improvement in pain and function for several chronic pain conditions. There are concerns regarding bacterial colonization of the temporary lead extensions and subsequent infection risk in a two-session implantation procedure. Although there is no standardized evaluation of SCS lead contamination, this study evaluates the infection rate and microbial colonization of SCS lead extensions with sonication, a method that is established in implant-related infection diagnostics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study comprised 32…

What Is the Role of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sonication in Periprosthetic Joint Infections?

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most dreaded complications in joint replacement surgery. Diagnosis and treatment can be difficult and biofilms are of major concern due to their low susceptibility toward antibiotics. METHODS: This review focuses on the use of sonication as an evolving diagnostic and adjunct treatment modality in the context of PJI. Therapeutic application of sonication is discussed separately for its (i) direct action on bacteria, (ii) synergistic effects with antibiotics, and (iii) effects on release of antibiotics from bone cement. RESULTS: Us…

Sonication of orthopaedic implants: A valuable technique for diagnosis of prosthetic joint infections.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and prompt microbiological diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is crucial for successful antimicrobial treatment. Studies have shown the diagnostic utility of sonication of explanted implants in total joint arthroplasty but all did not use consensus statements for defining PJI. We evaluated the diagnostic utility of culture of samples obtained by sonication of explanted implants compared with periprosthetic tissue cultures (PTC) for the diagnosis of PJI using Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) consensus criteria. We also assessed the utility of culture of…

Sonic aerosol therapy to target maxillary sinuses.

AIM: Intranasal aerosol administration of drugs is widely used by ENT specialists. Although clinical evidence is still lacking, intranasal nebulization appears to be an interesting therapeutic option for local drug delivery, targeting anatomic sites beyond the nasal valve. The sonic nebulizer NL11SN associates a 100Hertz (Hz) sound to the aerosolization to improve deposition in the nasal/paranasal sinuses. The aim of the present study was: to evaluate in vivo the influence of associating a 100Hz sound on sinus ventilation and nasal and pulmonary aerosol deposition in normal volunteers, and; to

Swallowing detection by sonic and subsonic frequencies: a comparison.

The detection of swallowing events by acoustic means represents an important tool to assess and diagnose swallowing disorders as well as to objectively monitor ingestive behavior of individuals. Acoustic sensors used to register swallowing sounds may also capture sound artifacts arising from intrinsic speech and external noise affecting the detection. In this paper we tested if subsonic frequencies are less prone to artifacts from speech, chewing and other intrinsic sounds than sonic frequencies. A simple method using a throat and an ambient microphone was employed to compare the swallowing de

Role of Sonic hedgehog in the development of the trachea and oesophagus.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The secreted glycoprotein, Sonic hedgehog (Shh) plays an important patterning role in the development of many organ systems. The authors aimed to study the temporal and spatial pattern of expression of Shh and its receptor Ptc1 during the development of the anterior foregut and to test the hypothesis that the Shh expression pattern is disturbed during the development of oesophageal atresia (OA) and tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) in Adriamycin-treated mouse embryos. METHODS: Saline and Adriamycin-treated (4 mg/kg) CBA/Ca embryos were harvested between embryonic days (E)

Human developmental disorders and the Sonic hedgehog pathway.

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is a morphogen that is crucial for normal development of a variety of organ systems, including the brain and spinal cord, the eye, craniofacial structures, and the limbs. Mutations in the human SHH gene and genes that encode its downstream intracellular signaling pathway cause several clinical disorders. These include holoprosencephaly (HPE, the most common anomaly of the developing forebrain), nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, sporadic tumors, including basal cell carcinomas, and three distinct congenital disorders: Greig syndrome Pallister-Hall syndrome, and isolated
