The hygroscopicity of solid sorbitol is important for its utilization as a sweetener in the pharmaceutical and food industries. The molecular foundations of sorbitol hydration characteristics are explored here using two solvated cocrystals, sorbitol-water and sorbitol-pyridine. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this report is to describe a cost-effective strategy for management of constipation in nursing home residents with dementia.
DESIGN: We conducted a prospective observational quality improvement study of 41 residents with chronic constipation and receiving an osmotic laxative. Sorbitol was substituted for lactulose.
SETTING: The study was conducted at a dementia special care unit at a Veterans Administration hospital.

UNLABELLED: Lens sorbitol dehydrogenase activity was assayed in patients with congenital cataracts, senile cataracts, without cataracts and in one fetal lens. In patients with congenital cataracts we did not observe any abnormality of galactose and sorbitol metabolising enzymes in erythrocytes. In one of these patients with inexplicable congenital cataracts lens sorbitol dehydrogenase deficiency was found.

On oral administration of sorbitol (10 g), 32% of the 124 healthy adults (41 in the U.S.A., 83 in India) developed abdominal symptoms. The aim of the study was to assess the claimed toothcleansing effect of sorbitol and sucrose flavoured chewing gums. A total of 24 dental students participated in a double-blind, four times crossed over clinical trial during which each student chewed both types of gum for 4 days each. No other means to clean the teeth were allowed during the test periods. Two 4-day periods of no oral hygiene and no chewing were used as controls indicating the normal growth rate of plaque. Utilisation of glucose and sorbitol in medically induced hypercorticalic states was investigated by means of the steroid-glucose-tolerance-test (SGTT) in 9 children, aged 6-16 years suffering from obesity and prediabetes. Adult lenses, normal and nondiabetic as well as diabetic cataracts, are found to contain limited levels of aldose reductase (AR) and high levels of polyol dehydrogenase (PD) relative to the animal lens.
