Near real-time space-time cluster analysis for detection of enteric disease outbreaks in a community setting.

OBJECTIVES: To enhance timely surveillance of bacterial enteric pathogens, space-time cluster analysis was introduced in Israel in May 2013. METHODS: Stool isolation data of Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter from patients of a large Health Maintenance Organization were analyzed weekly by ArcGIS and SaTScan, and cluster results were sent promptly to local departments of health (LDOHs). RESULTS: During eighteen months, we identified 52 Shigella sonnei clusters, two Salmonella clusters, and no Campylobacter clusters. S. sonnei clusters lasted from one to 33 days and included three to 30 i

Geographical distribution and space-time clustering of human illnesses with major Salmonella serotypes in Florida, USA, 2017-2018.

Nontyphoidal salmonellosis is the leading reported foodborne illness in Florida. Although the diversity of Salmonella serotypes circulating … e I 4,[5],12:i:-, the monophasic variant of Typhimurium was limited to the south. We also evaluated space-time clustering of isolates at the zip code level using scan statistic models. Space-time clusters were detected for each major serotype during 2017-2018. The multinomial scan statistic found the risk of illness with Javiana was higher in the north and southwest in …

Are transient environmental agents involved in the cause of primary biliary cirrhosis? Evidence from space-time clustering analysis.

The cause of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is unclear. Both genetic and environmental factors are likely to contribute. Some studies have suggested that one or more infectious agents may be involved. To examine whether infections may contribute to the cause of PBC, we have analyzed for space-time clustering using population-based data from northeast England over a defined period (1987-2003). Space-time clustering is observed when excess cases of a disease are found within limited geographical areas at limited periods of time. If present, it is suggestive of the involvement of one or more env…

Predictive Value of Time-Space Clusters for HIV Transmission in Washington State, 2017-2019.

BACKGROUND: Pillar 4 of the United States' End the HIV Epidemic plan is to respond quickly to HIV outbreaks, but the utility of CDC's tool for identifying HIV outbreaks through time-space cluster detection has not been evaluated. The objective of this evaluation is to quantify the ability of the CDC time-space cluster criterion to predict future HIV diagnoses and to compare it to a space-time permutation statistic implemented in SaTScan software. SETTING: Washington State from 2017 to 2019. METHODS: We applied both cluster criteria to incident HIV cases in Washington State to identify cluste

Unusual space-time patterning of the Fallon, Nevada leukemia cluster: Evidence of an infectious etiology.

The town of Fallon within Churchill County, Nevada exhibited an unusually high incidence of childhood leukemia during the years 1997-2003. We examined the temporal and spatial patterning of the leukemia case homes in comparison to the distribution of the general population at risk, other cancer incidence, and features of land use. Leukemia cases were predominantly diagnosed during the early to mid summer, exhibiting a seasonal bias. Leukemia cases lived outside of the "developed/urban" area of Fallon, predominantly in the "agriculture/pasture" region of Churchill County, circumscribing downtow

Cholera cases cluster in time and space in Matlab, Bangladesh: implications for targeted preventive interventions.

BACKGROUND: : Cholera remains a serious public health threat in Asia, Africa and in parts of the Americas. Three World health Organization (WHO) pre-qualified oral cholera vaccines are now available but their supply is limited, so current supplies must be administered strategically. This requires an improved understanding of disease transmission and control strategies. METHODS: : We used demographics and disease surveillance data collected from 1991 to 2000 in Matlab, Bangladesh, to estimate the spatial and temporal extent of the zone of increased risk around cholera cases. Specifically, we c

Spatial and space-time clustering and demographic characteristics of human nontyphoidal Salmonella infections with major serotypes in Toronto, Canada.

Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) causes a substantial health burden to human populations in Canada and worldwide. Exposure sources and demographic factors vary by location and can therefore have a major impact on salmonellosis clustering. We evaluated major NTS serotypes: S. Enteritidis (n = 620), S. Typhimurium (n = 150), S. Thompson (n = 138), and S. Heidelberg (n = 136) reported in the city of Toronto, Canada, between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2017. Cases were analyzed at the forward sortation area (FSA)-level (an area indicated by the first three characters of the postal code

Preponderance of vaccine-preventable diseases hotspots in northern Ghana: a spatial and space-time clustering analysis from 2010 to 2014.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) persist globally with a disproportionately high burden in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Although this might be partly due to the failure to sustain vaccination coverage above 90% in some WHO regions, a more nuanced understanding of VPD transmission beyond vaccination coverage may unveil other important factors in VPD transmission and control. This study identified VPDs hotspots and explored their relationships with ecology, urbanicity and land-use variations (Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) activities) in Ghana. METHODS:

Severe weather events and cryptosporidiosis in Aotearoa New Zealand: A case series of space-time clusters.

Occurrence of cryptosporidiosis has been associated with weather conditions in many settings internationally. We explored statistical clusters of human cryptosporidiosis and their relationship with severe weather events in New Zealand (NZ). Notified cases of cryptosporidiosis from 1997 to 2015 were obtained from the national surveillance system. Retrospective space-time permutation was used to identify statistical clusters. Cluster data were compared to severe weather events in a national database. SaTScan analysis detected 38 statistically significant cryptosporidiosis clusters. Around a thir

Zika, chikungunya and co-occurrence in Brazil: space-time clusters and associated environmental-socioeconomic factors.

Chikungunya and Zika have been neglected as emerging diseases. This study aimed to analyze the space-time patterns of their occurrence and co-occurrence and their associated environmental and socioeconomic factors. Univariate (individually) and multivariate (co-occurrence) scans were analyzed for 608,388 and 162,992 cases of chikungunya and Zika, respectively. These occurred more frequently in the summer and autumn. The clusters with the highest risk were initially located in the northeast, dispersed to the central-west and coastal areas of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (2018-2021), and then in

Space-time cluster analysis of American visceral leishmaniasis in Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil.

A space-time analysis of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in humans in the city of Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil was carried out based on 239 cases diagnosed between June 2003 and October 2008. Spatial analysis of the disease showed that cases occurred especially in the city's urban areas. AVL annual incidence rates were calculated, demonstrating that the highest rate occurred in 2006 (19.55/100,000 inhabitants). This finding was confirmed by the time series analysis, which also showed a positive tendency over the period analyzed. The present study allows us to conclude that the disease

Transmissible virus dementia. I. An unusual space and time clustering of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and of other organic presenile dementia cases.

A peculiar grouping of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) and of other organic presenile dementia (OPD) cases in a small, prevalently rural area in Czechoslovakia to the east of 19 degrees 35' E and to the north of 48 degrees 15' N was studied. Between August, 1972 and November, 1976, three histologically proven CJD cases, bearing no sporadic of familial patterns, were observed. The distance between their dwellings was 13--17 km. In addition, seven cases of OPD were detected in the same area, two of them being suspected as possible CJD according to clinical evidence.

Residential mobility impacts relative risk estimates of space-time clusters of chlamydia in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

We determine the impact of residential mobility in the prevalence and transmission dynamics of sexually transmitted infections. We illustrate our approach on reported chlamydia infections obtained from the Michigan Disease Surveillance System for Kalamazoo County, USA, from 2006 to 2014. We develop two scenarios, one with fixed residential addresses and one considering residential mobility. We then compare the resulting space-time clusters and relative risk (RR) of infection. The space-time scan statistics showed increased RR in an area with previously low risk of sexually transmitted infectio

Space-time clusters and co-occurrence of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum malaria in West Bengal, India.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, a prominent vector borne disease causing over a million annual cases worldwide, predominantly affects vulnerable populations in the least developed regions. Despite their preventable and treatable nature, malaria remains a global public health concern. In the last decade, India has faced a significant decline in malaria morbidity and mortality. As India pledged to eliminate malaria by 2030, this study examined a decade of surveillance data to uncover space-time clustering and seasonal trends of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases in West Bengal. METHO…

Tartrate resistant acid phosphatase positive splenic lymphoma: a relatively benign condition occurring in a time-space cluster?

Conventional light and electron microscopic studies, together with cytochemical and immunocytochemical staining procedures, were carried out to ascertain whether the lymphomata of four elderly female patients living within 10 kilometers of each other, who presented within a short space of time with massive splenomegaly and varying cytopenia, belonged to any particular subgroup of lymphoma. In each case the lymphoma had a diffuse pattern and mature B cell phenotype. The malignant cells were of uniform cell type, slightly larger than admixed polymorphonuclear leucocytes, and showed minimal nucle

From known chemical space to unannotated metabolites: a cluster-guided retention-time driven framework for biologically informed annotation.

INTRODUCTION: Untargeted metabolomics often results in a significant portion of unannotated metabolites, or "metabolic dark matter," which hinders biological interpretation. OBJECTIVES: A two-step analytical approach was developed to systematically prioritize and interpret unannotated metabolites using plasma LC-MS/MS data from pregnant women with obesity as a biologically relevant test dataset. METHODS: The first step involved clustering 1,021 known metabolites into ten structurally coherent groups based on the Tanimoto similarity, thus defining the biologically relevant chemical space of t
