Paraganglioma of the sacral spinal canal.

Paragangliomas are tumors arising in the paraganglia. Involvement of the spine is less common, and usually takes the form of intradural comp … malities, and no tumor recurrence after one year. Even though rare, the paraganglioma of the sacral spinal canal should be considered in the differential diagnosis of tumors occurring in the spine.

[The morphology of the lumbar spinal canal].

Measurements of cast preparations of epidural cavities yielded data characterising the "internal silhouette" of the lumbar vertebral canal. Three groups of different shapes of lumbar vertebral canal were found to be statistically distinguishable from each other. These are determined by the constitution of the patient. The different spatial capacity of the three types and the different relations of the diameters modify the value of the isolated determined distance, for example of the sagittal diameter at L5, which is a clinically extremely relevant factor that must be taken into account.

Biomechanics of the lumbar spinal canal.

The normal mobility of the vertebral column, particularly in the cervical and lumbar regions, gives rise to major changes in the length and lumen of the spinal canal and of its volume. Its contents must therefore adapt to these changes without disturbance to their several functions. The contents are partly fluid, partly neural tissue, but also connective tissue: all with differing physical characteristics. Thus, all respond differently to changes in the space in which they are contained. When pathological changes supervene, the spinal meninges, the spinal cord and nerve roots may be adversely …

Facet Arthrosis and Spinal Lipomatosis-Related Spinal Canal Stenosis.

A 33-year-old man was referred to physical therapy by his primary care physician for low back pain that had been present for 7 months. The neurologic screen with mixed upper and lower motor neuron signs was of concern for spinal cord involvement. The primary care physician was contacted and magnetic resonance imaging ordered. Facet arthrosis and epidural lipomatosis were present, resulting in thoracic and lumbar spinal stenosis. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2020;50(6):345. doi:10.2519/jospt.2020.9059.

The narrow lumbar spinal canal or lumbar spinal stenosis.

Narrow lumbar spinal canal or lumbar spinal stenosis is a not uncommon problem. Thirty-two patients with this disorder have been treated surgically at the Ochsner Medical Center between 1963 and 1973. The best method of diagnosis is a careful history and second is roentgenographic evidence, particularly the myelogram. The surgical treatment consists of total laminectomy and foraminotomy to insure complete decompression of the nerve roots. Eighteen patients have been followed from 14 to 44 months. Sixteen of the 18 considered their operations a success.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Spinal Canal in Quantitative Assessment of Patients with Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. PURPOSE: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) has traditionally been evaluated morphologically, th … scs from healthy volunteers and 52 intervertebral discs from LSS patients were measured. Also, intraspinal canal area, Schizas classification (A: normal, B: mild stenosis, C: severe stenosis) and correlations with symptoms were investigated. Clinical symptoms were checked for the presence of low back pain (LBP), intermittent claudication (IMC), and bladder and …

Spinous process osteotomy to facilitate the access to the spinal canal when decompressing the spinal canal in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the union-rate of the spinous process after performing a spinous process osteotomy and whether union affects the clinical results after surgery. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: In the present study, spinous process osteotomy was used to facilitate access to the spinal canal when performing a decompressive procedure for lumbar spinal stenosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the union rate of the spinous process and its effect on the clinical results of the procedure. METHODS: All patients were includ…

Reoperations Following Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis.

In the current clinical scenario, restenosis following the primary surgical procedure for lumbar canal stenosis is being frequently noticed. A number of studies have evaluated the reoperation rates following different surgical procedures for lumbar canal stenosis. However, a dilemma still exists about the surgical procedures, associated comorbidities and reoperation rates. In this study, we have reviewed the existing literature for lumbar canal stenosis surgery and their reoperation rates. A PubMed search for all papers stating "reoperation after spinal stenosis," "revision surgery after spina

Laminectomy for thoracic spinal canal stenosis.

Stenosis of the thoracic spinal canal is a relatively rare disorder with numerous causes. Clinical manifestations include signs and or symptoms consistent with focal thoracic radiculopathy and/or myelopathy. Several surgical approaches for the decompression of the stenotic thoracic canal have been described. Laminectomy is typically reserved for only those cases in which dorsal compression of the neural elements is demonstrated; it is contraindicated when the epidural compression is primarily ventral in location.

[MR myelography in spinal canal stenosis].

PURPOSE: The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical value of 3D-MR-myelography (3D-MRM) in comparison to myelography and intra-operative findings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 25 patients with suspected lumbar spinal canal stenosis were studied via myelography and 3D-MRM (volume-data set, 3D-FISP sequence, TR 73 ms, TE 21 ms, flip angle 7 degrees, sagittal slices) besides the routinely acquired sagittal and axial T1- and T2-weighted images. Diagnoses were made by two radiologists and one neurosurgeon without knowing the clinical history and symptoms, in two separate sessions.…

[Radiology of lumbar spinal canal stenosis].

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a frequent cause of low back pain. In this paper we discuss both the pathophysiology and clinical symptomatology of the disease. We also discuss advantages and limitations of plain film radiography, myelography, CT and MRI in its diagnosis. Following an analysis of the pertinent literature we try to determine the relative merit of the various radiologic procedures as to their true representation of clinical and intraoperative findings and faithful rendition of postoperative results. Until sufficient statistically valid data regarding the clinical significance of radio

Acrodysostosis associated with spinal canal stenosis.

An adult case of acrodysostosis with striking lumbar spinal canal stenosis is reported. She complained of numbness on the right arm, intermittent claudication with numbness on both legs and pain and weakness on the left leg. Although the reduced lumbar interpedicular distance has been reported, no adult case with neurologic symptoms has been reported.

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis in osteopoikilosis.

Spinal canal stenosis is diagnosed in a 45-year-old man who has osteopoikilosis and anomalies of the hip. Clinical investigations demonstrated a lumbar syndrome, previously described as an early phase of a neuropathic condition, namely, the premyelopathic syndrome. Roentgenographic calculations of canal diameters and computerized tomography proved helpful in the diagnosis of narrowed spinal canal. This case, presenting with unusual aspects of osteopoikilosis, emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and surgical decompression of the stenosed spinal canal.
