Descriptive epidemiology of pediatric tennis injuries: insights from a decade of national data.

OBJECTIVES: Tennis is a sport which can result in a range of injuries due to the extensive use of both the upper and lower extremities during play. Although tennis injuries are described in the literature, data specifically characterizing injury patterns in pediatric populations remain limited. This study aims to identify the epidemiology of pediatric tennis injuries presenting to US emergency departments (ED) over the past 10 years through both a sex and age specific analysis. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) wQuery ID:AQ1 Page No:1 Query ID:AQ2 Page No:1 Q

Complications that may occur in those with spinal cord injuries who participate in sport.

The purpose of this study was to determine the risk of developing complications in paraplegics taking part in sport. It is a retrospective study of patients with complete spinal cord injury at the spinal level of C7--cauda equina/conus injury, and consists of 61 patients admitted to the Beitostølen Healthsportcenter, Norway. All of them had achieved satisfactory bladder/bowel function. The wheelchair dependents were all skilled in the use of the wheelchair. They participated in a training programme with an average duration of 25 days. Different activities were tried, such as weight-lifting, pu

Injuries in elite-level women's football-a two-year prospective study in the Irish Women's National League.

We investigated the pattern of injuries in elite-level women's football in Ireland, during a two-season prospective injury surveillance study in the Women's National League (WNL). Seven out of the eight clubs (271 players) in the WNL were followed prospectively during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The injury incidence rate in matches (19.2/1000 h) was 7.5 times higher than in training (2.5/1000 h). Players, on average, sustained 0.69 injuries per season (266 injuries/383 player seasons), which equates to 15 time-loss injuries per season for a squad of 22 players. The majority of the injuries sust

Lower limb injuries in New Zealand Defence Force personnel: descriptive epidemiology.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of lower limb injuries in the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). METHOD: Data from all NZDF lower limb injury claims from an 11-month period were examined for type, site, and circumstances of injury. Both injury codes and narratives were analysed, allowing each injury event to be classified according to mechanism of injury, object involvement, and activity at the time of injury, as well as type and site. RESULTS: The commonest lower limb musculoskeletal injuries were ankle sprains or strains (35%) and knee sprains or strains (16%). Most commonly, injuri

Hip and Pelvis Avulsion Fractures in Adolescents.

In brief Avulsion fractures at the seven Pelvis and hip apophyses may occur more often than reported. Because radiographs are often not obtained, these injuries may commonly be dismissed as sprains and strains. With rare exceptions, avulsion fractures can be treated conservatively- much, in fact, like a sprain or strain. However, because a 'fracture' is involved, an accurate diagnosis generally helps ensure compliance, avoiding the possibility of nonunion or malunion.

Injuries and illnesses in the national basketball association: a 10-year perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To present an overview of the medical conditions experienced by athletes competing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from the 1988-1989 through the 1997-1998 seasons. DESIGN AND SETTING: Athletic trainers completed profiles that provided demographic information for each player. Injury reports indicated when and where the injury occurred, pathology, onset, activity, and the mechanism of injury. The amount of time lost, injured list status, hospitalization, and surgery were also reported. Reportable injuries were those that resulted in (1) physician referral, (2) a practic

A Retrospective Evaluation of Injuries to Australian Urban Firefighters (2003 to 2012): Injury Types, Locations, and Causal Mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: Benchmark data were sought for evaluating injury trends within Australian firefighters. METHODS: Work-related injury data from Australia's largest urban fire and rescue organization were analyzed (2003 to 2012), with an emphasis on classification (occurrence, mechanism, agency, nature, and location) and demographic details. RESULTS: Firefighters were injured on 6997 occasions (177 injuries per annum per 1000 full-time employees). The largest causal mechanism was muscular stress (74 injuries per 1000 full-time employees annually), with 62.1% of those incidents involving materials h

Acute Ankle Sprains.

Understanding the types of ankle sprains is essential in determining the most appropriate treatment and preventing substantial missed time from sports. Commonly known and recognized is an acute lateral ankle sprain, however, a differentiation should also be made to understand high (syndesmotic) ankle sprains as the mechanism of injury and recovery periods differ between these two types.
