Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a recently described condition with specific immunopathologic findings. Demographics indicate that white women in their late middle age are more susceptible to this condition. The clinical history of CUS patients is of painful, exacerbating and remitting oral erosions, and ulcerations. The histologic features are non-specific, with a chronic inflammatory infiltrate, often appearing similar to oral lichen planus (OLP). Diagnosis of CUS requires surgical biopsy with immunofluorescence microscopic examination. Accurate diagnosis is important because the usua…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis remains a commonly occurring cause of oral pain and ulceration. Although the ulcerations of RAS are multifactorial and of unknown cause, recognition of the role of patient and environmental factors may be helpful in developing recommendations for treatment and prevention of future ulcers.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is the most common ulcerative disease of the oral mucosa. The lesions of aphthous stomatitis are mucosal manifestations of a variety of conditions, 30 per cent of which may be discerned by history, physical examination, and appropriate laboratory testing. Correction of underlying conditions or deficiencies results in improvement or remission in aphthous disease activity. Treatment of lesions for which an underlying cause cannot be discerned is discussed.

5 new cases of geographic stomatitis are presented and added to a review of 32 similar cases reported in the literature up to 1987. Furthermore, a series of 70 consecutive patients with psoriasis were examined for oral mucosal lesions. Based upon the findings of the literature and the results of the present study, there seems insufficient proof to consider geographic stomatitis an oral manifestation of psoriasis.

Allergic contact stomatitis (ACS) is an oral mucosal immunoinflammatory disorder variably characterized clinically by erythematous plaques, vesiculation, ulceration, and/or hyperkeratosis and by pain, burning sensation, or itchiness. ACS is brought about by a T cell-mediated, delayed hypersensitivity immune reaction generated by a second or subsequent contact exposure of an allergen with the oral mucosa, in a genetically susceptible, sensitized subject. Lichenoid contact reaction is a variant of ACS brought about by direct contact with the oral mucosa of certain metals in dental restorations. …

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2005eng
BACKGROUND: The aim of this report is to highlight the case that pemphigus vulgaris (PV) may mimic aphthous stomatitis. Pemphigus classically causes persistent oral ulceration.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report five patients from southern Europe, who presented with recurrent oral ulceration mimicking aphthous stomatitis, but who proved by histology, immunostaining and antibodies against epithelial intercellular substance to have PV.
CONCLUSION: It is advisable to assay antibodies against desmoglein 3 in patients who appear to suffer recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) with atypical ulceration f…

Contact stomatitis is rather uncommon because of the relative resistance of the oral mucosa to irritant agents and allergens. The clinical manifestations of contact stomatitis are extremely variable and include erythema, erosions, ulcerations, leukoplakia-like lesions, and lichenoid reactions. Clinical signs are frequently less pronounced than subjective symptoms, and patients commonly experience severe functional problems despite only mild mucosal alterations. Allergic stomatitis is rare and almost always attributable to metallic mercury and gold salts. A careful history and an accurate exami…

Any alteration in the balance of bacterial challenge versus the host's ability to resist and repair will result in oral lesions that are sim … are likely to be a major contributing factor. Therefore patients with chronic refractory gingivitis-stomatitis must be considered to be plaque intolerant. Only with a frequent regimen of aggressive and thorough professional dental treatment plus meticulous oral home care on a daily basis can one expect to keep these cases in remission. Because this is often …
