General vulnerability to stuttering: The experience of stuttering and conditions bringing about invulnerability.

General vulnerability to stuttering is the broad awareness of stuttering and the ever-present, experiential sense of a person who stutters (PWS). It is defined by stuttering in all its forms and the awareness of its presence, both in moments of stuttering and moments of perceivably fluent speech. Under the heading of general vulnerability to stuttering is specific vulnerability to stuttering, which includes the actual events of stuttering (i.e., overt symptoms, covert symptoms, subperceptual stuttering, and anticipation of stuttering). The differentiation between the two is that specific vulne…

Copper in developmental stuttering.

It has previously been reported that men with developmental stuttering showed reduced concentration of copper in the blood, and a negative correlation between the copper level and the severity of stuttering. Disorders of copper metabolism may result in dysfunction of the basal ganglia system and dystonia, a motor disorder sharing some traits of stuttering. It has been shown that copper ions affect the dopamine and the GABA systems. With this background we investigated the plasma level of copper, the copper binding protein ceruloplasmin, and the estimated level of free copper in stuttering adul…

[Echo reading and stuttering].

Echo-reading is a practical therapeutic tool which has been proposed for use in stuttering, most especially when the functions of rhythm and association are disrupted in stuttered speech. After a period of preparation in which the mechanical work involved in speech is integrated, it is proposed that there should follow a period of listening and association, which serves to re-establish the spoken word with its meaning and expressivity. The subject undergoes rehabilitation in a living language which is correlated with the imagination, and with that Other quality which always forms a part of spe…

Effects of behavior inhibition on stuttering severity and adverse consequences of stuttering in 3-6-year-old children who stutter.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether 3- to-6-year-old children who stutter and exhibit a higher degree of behavioral inhibition (BI), a correlate of shyness, stutter more frequently and experience greater negative consequences of stuttering (per parent-report) than their peers who stutter but have lower BI. METHOD: Forty-six children who stutter (CWS; 35 boys & 11 girls; mean age 4 years, 2 months) participated. Their degree of BI was assessed by measuring the latency to their 6th spontaneous comment during a conversation with an unfamiliar examiner (following Kagan, …

Contemporary clinical conversations about stuttering: How to keep up with stuttering treatment research.

PURPOSE: To discuss how speech-language pathologists can keep up with stuttering treatment research. To inform junior clinicians and students of speech-language pathology about this matter. METHOD: The issue was discussed by two university researchers and two speech-language pathologists who provide clinical services. Written conversational turns in an exchange were limited to 100 words each. RESULT: There was agreement among the group that keeping up to date with stuttering research is essential for speech-language pathologists, and to do so requires a basic understanding of research method…

Online indirect group treatment for preschool children who stutter-Effects on stuttering severity and the impact of stuttering on child and parents.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering development in preschool children might be influenced by parents' concern, awareness and knowledge. Indirect treatment may therefore be appropriate. Intervention in a group format has been shown to be positive for stuttering and an online procedure increases the accessibility of the intervention. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate whether an online indirect group treatment for children who stutter could increase parents' knowledge and confidence in managing the stuttering, reduce the impact of stuttering on the child and parents as well as reduce stuttering …

Stuttering in English-Mandarin bilingual speakers: the influence of language dominance on stuttering severity.

PURPOSE: English and Mandarin are the 2 most spoken languages in the world, yet it is not known how stuttering manifests in English-Mandarin bilinguals. In this research, the authors investigated whether the severity and type of stuttering is different in English and Mandarin in English-Mandarin bilinguals, and whether this difference was influenced by language dominance. METHOD: Thirty English-Mandarin bilinguals who stutter (BWS), ages 12-44 years, were categorized into 3 groups (15 English-dominant, 4 Mandarin-dominant, and 11 balanced bilinguals) using a self-report classification tool. T…

Stuttering as an act of love.

For us to love each other we must first know each other. We come to know each other through communication, the purpose of which is communion. Traditionally, we think of stuttering as impairing this communion. Stuttering prevents us from sharing ourselves with others by distorting our message and increasing the effort it takes for us to speak. This need not be the case. Our stuttering is as much a part of us as any other attribute. For others to know us deeply, they must also know our stuttering. Likewise, for us to know others, we must know how they react to us - all of us - including our stut…

The effects of carbamazepine on stuttering.

No pharmacological treatment protocol has proven generally useful for all patients who stutter. Various medications, behavior therapy, relaxation, suggestion, and social-based therapies have been used. For this drug treatment study, two groups of adult stutterers were followed in an 8-week open label protocol. All subjects had in the past received speech therapy; none had been treated previously with medication for stuttering. The first group (N = 12) received a maximum dose of 800 mg of carbamazepine; the second group (N = 8) received a maximum dose of 400 mg of carbamazepine. Each patient se…

Is stuttering a contraindication to psychotherapy?

This is a case report of a patient who stutters and was treated for problems of self-esteem with focused brief psychotherapy. The literature by and large is against the use of individual psychotherapy for neurotic problems in patients who stutter. The countertransference may account for the unwarranted pessimism in the literature about such patients. In this case the successful resolution of countertransference feelings facilitated the achievement of the goals of therapy. Further reports on such treatment attempts are warranted. Speech therapy may be facilitated by brief focused psychotherapy
