Sunburn is a physiological disorder that affects the visual and organoleptic properties of grapes. The appearance of brown and necrotic spots severely affects the commercial value of the fruit, and in extreme cases, significantly decreases yield. Depending on the severity of the damage and the driving factors, sunburn on grapes can be classified as sunburn browning (SB) or as sunburn necrosis (SN). Sunburn results from a combination of excessive photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and UV radiation and temperature that can be exacerbated by other stress factors such as water deficit. Frui…

For B-All, we treated a five-year-old boy with a combination chemotherapy course including intermediate-dose methotrexate (MTX) with citrovorum factor rescue (CF) two days after a mild sunburn. The insolation inflammation vanished completely, but was reactivated after three days much more severely than the original sunburn, and healed slowly over three weeks. The reactivation phenomenon has previously been described in man and in the guinea pig. It differs substantially from "radiation recall" caused by other cytostatic drugs, as sunburn is not enhanced by MTX applied simultaneously with insol…

This paper reviews the current epidemiologic and experimental evidence regarding the effect of sunburns on cutaneous malignant melanoma and the possible effectiveness of sunscreens in preventing those effects. Although there is growing agreement that sunlight exposure, particularly the ultraviolet wavelengths in solar radiation, contributes to the etiology of cutaneous malignant melanoma, there are at present insufficient data on the effective ultraviolet waveband and whether the use of sunscreens may be useful in preventing melanoma. The main obstacle in answering this question is that the ex…

In brief: Many people suffer the agonies of sunburn, sometimes repeatedly. Acute sunburn, characterized by erythema, edema, and at times blister formation, usually peaks within 12 to 24 hours after exposure, gradually subsides, and is followed by hyperpigmentation and peeling. Chronic sun damage, which leads to dry, leathery, wrinkled skin, frequently results in the growth of precancerous actinic keratoses. If enough damage occurs, skin cancers may appear. These must be treated and removed. However, the best treatment for sunburn damage is prevention.
