Osteomas in pediatric oral surgery practice.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: To present the findings of our own research regarding the frequency, clinical and morphological characteristics, and treatment strategies for osteomas of the maxillofacial region in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: The study is based on the analysis of outpatient records and inpatient medical histories of 17 children who underwent examination and treatment for osteomas over a 10-year period. Management of Oral Surgery-Related Complications.

This article reviews the optimal management of oroantral fistulas, implants protruding into the maxillary sinus, implants completely displaced into the sinus(es), and infected bone grafts used for sinus augmentation. For each scenario, multidisciplinary management strategies will be considered based on whether there is concurrent infectious odontogenic sinusitis. A multidisciplinary approach with oral surgeons and otolaryngologists is often mandatory to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Dental Evaluation: Oral Surgery-Related Complications.

The article provides an in-depth review focused on diagnosing oral surgery-related complications that may cause odontogenic sinusitis (ODS). It emphasizes the importance of evaluating patients with prior oral surgical procedures to determine whether the prior procedure is an ongoing infectious source of the ODS. Specifically, diagnostic evaluations will be described for detecting oroantral communications and fistulas, dental implant dislocation or protrusion, and whether implants and graft placed in maxillary sinuses are infected. It highlights the role of different oral examination techniques

Oral surgery: part 3. Temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a collection of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the muscles of mastication and/or associated structures. They are probably one of the most commonly presenting chronic orofacial pain complaints to the dental profession. TMDs are recognised as a chronic illness and exert biopsychosocial effects on the patient and should therefore be managed in a biopsychosocial manner. This chapter will firstly cover the basic anatomy of the TMJ and its associated structures and then go on to discuss the signs and symptoms, aetiology, diagnosis, and

[Oral mucosa for reconstructive urethral surgery].

The use of oral mucosa for urethral stricture repair has become the standard approach in reconstructive urethral surgery. Compared to other tissues oral mucosa shows several advantages, such as simple harvesting, good urine tolerance and low harvesting morbidity. For defects of the male bulbar urethra measuring 2 cm or longer, urethral reconstruction with oral mucosa is the procedure of choice. The oral mucosa graft can be used as an inlay or as an onlay graft. Most repairs can be completed in one stage but for complex strictures two stages are needed.

Epidemiological analysis of oral surgery procedures.

The epidemiological study was conducted to assess oral health of patients referred to the Department of Oral Surgery at Clinical Hospital Center in Rijeka. The distribution of particular diagnoses and surgical interventions in relation to frequency of occurrence was tested. The total of 1,268 patients aged from 5 to 89 years, both sexes, were included in the study. All the patients were treated under local anesthesia. The most common reason for referral to oral surgery was chronic periapical lesion (33.3%), followed by retained root (26.7%), impacted tooth (12.7%), and radicular cyst (8.3%). T

Medicolegal aspects of oral implant surgery.

The number of practitioners performing implant surgery has increased dramatically over the last fifteen years. As confidence is gained they tend to accept increasingly challenging cases and it is to be expected that the incidence of problems and complications will increase. Serious problems and complications may result from inadequate treatment planning, some from careless instrumentation, and some from lack of appropriate precautions. Many have resulted in medicolegal actions and it seems prudent to study these in the hope that awareness of these disasters may prevent their repetition.

Update on Medications for Oral Sedation in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Office.

Dental anxiety is a leading cause of postponing treatment and/or complete avoidance of professional oral care. Therefore, effective sedation and pain control are integral components of dental care for the fearful and anxious patient. The application of oral sedation aids the trained practitioner to provide care to the anxious dental patient and remains the safest, most established, and most commonly used route of drug administration. Proper training and understanding of pharmacologic properties allows for safe and effective application of analgesics and sedatives for oral sedation.

Thyroid surgery outcomes analysis in an oral and maxillofacial surgery department.

The purpose of this study was to identify complication rates of thyroidectomies performed within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Florida Health - Jacksonville, and to compare these with quantified data regarding complications of thyroidectomies performed by other specialties. Oral surgery in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by recurrent thrombosis, other associated autoimmune disease, and/or obstetrical morbidity along with persistent production of antiphospholipid antibodies. Because of the nature of this systemic disease, most patients are medicated with antithrombotic agents and abundant glucocorticoids. This study reports a cohort of 16 patients with APS, who underwent oral surgery between 2010 and 2017 at the Nagasaki University Hospital. Because oral antithrombotic therapy was continued in the perioperative period, all wounds we

Airway Management for the Oral Surgery Patient.

This article discusses anesthesia assessment concepts related to airway evaluation and airway maintenance for safe and reliable selection of either open system (entrainment of room air) or closed system (no entrainment of room air) airway devices, which can be used during office-based oral surgical procedures, depending on the needs of a patient. Dental facial and oral structures are integral to an anesthetist's preoperative patient evaluation prior to surgery. The preoperative medical history and physical examination as well as the nature of the oral surgical procedure affect the selection of

Oral and maxillofacial surgery: a new wrinkle.

A number of facial altering surgical procedures have been presented. Several areas are important to note. Most of these procedures were devised by practitioners lost to antiquity and individuals in a plethora of different fields, including orthopedics, dermatology, oral surgery, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology. Just as in the other specialties that perform these procedures, not all surgeons of the specialties perform the entire scope of their specialty. However, dentistry now has the capability to change the jaws, soft tissue drape of the face, neck, nose, and eyes, as well as smile lines
