BACKGROUND: We provide an overview of Bayesian estimation, hypothesis testing, and model-averaging and illustrate how they benefit parametric survival analysis. PURPOSE: To investigate the survival of patients with capsular or simple glaucoma compared with that of the common population, with particular attention to the impact of sex and use of acetazolamide (Diamox).
METHODS: The 30 year survival of 1147 patients with capsular or simple glaucoma who were finally hospitalized at the Eye Department, Rikshospitalet, Oslo, from 1961 to 1970, are analysed, using log rank tests. Parents of children with holoprosencephaly often have been told that their children will die within days or weeks. The evaluation of treatment and outcome in adult leukaemia requires unselected data. Such data is available from one Health Region in the United Kingdom with an adult population of 3.1 million. In the period July 1982 to December 1989, 676 cases of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), 136 of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and 141 of chronic granulocytic leukaemia (CGL) were registered. Limited information is available concerning the long-term survival of patients with atrioventricular discordance, ventriculoarterial discordance, and two ventricles (corrected transposition). The present study of the prognosis in peptic ulcer comprises (1) an analysis of deaths caused by the disease itself, and (2) an independent actuarial analysis of life expectancy. The computations are based on 235 deaths that occurred among 1905 patients with peptic ulcer who constituted a random sample of the occurrence of ulcer disease in an area of Denmark comprising half a million inhabitants.
