Hair, sweat and tears.

Hirsutism is a frequent and distressing presenting symptom in women, often in the setting of menstrual irregularity and acne. While polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common cause, the differential diagnosis of hirsutism is wide ranging and requires a thorough history and appropriate investigations to exclude potentially serious underlying causes. Several serious underlying conditions require active exclusion, otherwise patients are at risk of missed diagnosis and long-term sequelae of the untreated primary disease. The authors present a case of acromegaly where longstanding hirsutism was the pr

[Recurrent sweat gland abscess].

Hidradenitis suppurativa is of high clinical and social significance, particularly if appearing as symptom of acne inversa and if located in the genitoanal region. Successful treatment includes early diagnosis together with thorough surgical therapy. The latter consists of wide local excision in order to remove all infected tissue. Localization and the size of defect as well as the experience of the surgeon predict the method of plastic reconstruction. Non-surgical procedures are only of supporting character either prior to or after surgery.

[Sweat glands in pseudohypoaldosteronism].

Pseudohypoaldosteronism is a rare syndrome occurring during early infancy, which is mainly characterized by salt-depletion crises. Sodium chloride is lost via the kidneys resulting in a reduced sodium level and raised potassium level in the serum, leading to life-threatening disturbances of water and acid-base concentration. The excessive sodium loss seems to be caused by an unresponsiveness of the renal tubules to endogenous and exogenous mineralocorticoids. The colon, salivary and sweat glands, which are also involved in sodium reabsorption, may likewise be affected by the disease. We descri

Vulvar sweat gland carcinomas.

Sweat gland carcinomas constitute less than 10% of all malignant tumors of the vulva, including those associated with extramammary Paget's disease (EPD). The histopathologic diagnosis of vulvar sweat gland carcinomas is difficult because of their rarity; their resemblance to metastatic carcinomas of the internal female genitalia, kidneys, and other sites; and their diversity of microscopic appearances. We report five examples of vulvar sweat gland carcinomas, two of which were associated with EPD. The other tumors included one example each of ductal eccrine adenocarcinoma, eccrine porocarcinom

Biology of sweat glands and their disorders. II. Disorders of sweat gland function.

Part I of this article (J Am Acad Dermatol 1989; 20:537-63) focused on normal sweat gland function. Part II provides a discussion of hyperhidrosis and hypohidrosis. Hyperhidrotic disorders affect the palms and soles and the axillae and are associated with previous spinal cord injuries, peripheral neuropathies, brain lesions, intrathoracic neoplasms, systemic illness, and gustatory sweating. Hypohidrotic disorders include anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, hereditary sensory neuropathy, Holmes-Adie syndrome, and generalized anhidrosis.

Nonocclusive Sweat Collection Combined with Chemical Isotope Labeling LC-MS for Human Sweat Metabolomics and Mapping the Sweat Metabolomes at Different Skin Locations.

Human sweat is an excellent biofluid candidate for metabolomics due to its noninvasive sample collection and relatively simple matrix. We report a simple and inexpensive method for sweat collection over a defined period (e.g., 24 h) based on the use of a nonocclusive style sweat patch adhered to a skin. This method was combined with differential chemical isotope labeling (CIL) LC-MS for mapping the metabolome profiles of sweat samples collected from skins of the left forearm, lower back, and neck of 20 healthy volunteers. Three 24-h sweat samples were collected at three different days from eac

Do not break a sweat: avoiding pitfalls in the diagnosis of sweat gland tumors.

The group of malignant sweat gland neoplasms is characterized by a wide biologic spectrum, including tumors with indolent behavior, low-grade malignant potential with locally destructive tumor growth and high local recurrence rates and high-grade malignant potential characterized by risk for disseminated disease and disease-related mortality. Reliable diagnosis to predict behavior may be challenging for a number of reasons. The clinical presentation is often nonspecific. Many of the tumors are rare, and they are only infrequently encountered in routine diagnostic practice. A significant subset

Sweat Protects against Contact Hypersensitivity: Transient Sweat Suppression Compromises Skin Barrier Function in Mice.

Although subtle barrier defects may facilitate allergen penetration, thereby enabling allergic sensitization, the relationship between sweating disturbance and skin barrier function is unknown. However, many studies on contact hypersensitivity in mice examined ear skin, which does not sweat, instead of the footpad, where sweating is uniquely present. In this study, we assessed whether sweat suppression in the footpad before hapten application provoked a skin barrier abnormality and reduced inflammatory thresholds to topical haptens. Mice without any genetic skin barrier dysfunction displayed m

Quantification of sweat gland volume and innervation in neuropathy: Correlation with thermoregulatory sweat testing.

INTRODUCTION: No study has correlated thermoregulatory sweat testing (TST) with histopathologic study of sweat glands (SGs) and SG nerve fibers (SGNFs). METHODS: We studied 10 neuropathy patients in whom anhidrosis was found by TST and 10 matched controls. Skin biopsies were taken from both anhidrotic and sweating skin and immunohistochemical staining was done for nerves and basement membrane. For each biopsy, total tissue volume, total SG volume, and total SGNF length were measured. SGNF length per biopsy volume, SG volume per biopsy volume (SG%), and SGNF length per SG volume were calculate

Don't Sweat It: Cannabinoid CB1 Receptors Reduce Sweating in a Mouse Model.

Numerous exocrine glands play key physiological roles in the body that include tearing, salivation, and lactation, as well as the control of body temperature via sweating. Malfunction of sweat glands can be deeply problematic or-in the case of anhidrosis-life-threatening. The prevalence of sweating disorders is high, affecting millions. The few available therapies are generally of limited effectiveness. Several lines of evidence point to regulation of sweating by the cannabinoid signaling system, an arrangement that would mirror cannabinoid regulation of tearing and salivation. Mice sweat in t

Sweat potassium concentration may help to identify falsification of sweat test: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: To document the relevance of sweat potassium concentration in a reported case of a white Caucasian 27-month-old boy who presented with non-specific respiratory symptoms and several abnormal sweat test results compatible with cystic fibrosis (CF). DESIGN AND METHODS: Repeated sweat tests using the Gibson-Cooke technique in the presence and absence of the mother. RESULTS: The high within- and between-test variability, the very low sweat potassium concentrations, several aspects of the family's history and a negative exhaustive genetic analysis to identify any CFTR mutation, raised

Quantification of eccrine sweat glands with acetylcholine sweat-spot test and anatomical redistribution of sweating after T2-T3 thoracoscopic sympathicolysis.

BACKGROUND: In this study, patients treated by thoracoscopic sympathicolysis for palmar hyperhidrosis were evaluated to determine the number and response of sweat glands to intradermal acetylcholine stimulus. METHODS: A total of 30 patients were included in the study. Group A consisted of 10 patients with palmar hyperhidrosis who underwent thoracoscopic sympathicolysis in October 2005, and group B consisted of 20 patients who underwent surgery during the years 1999, 2000, and 2001. The study procedure involved applying iodine alcohol to the palm and then intradermally injecting 0.1 ml 1% acet

S1 guideline sweat gland carcinoma.

The current classification of sweat gland carcinomas is based on histomorphological characteristics and distinguishes between more than 20 entities. Most patients are older, but some subtypes also affect middle-aged and younger patients. The majority of tumors arise de novo. Sweat gland carcinomas have nonspecific clinical features. The tumors are usually located in the head and neck area and on extremities, with the exception of extramammary Paget's carcinoma, which has an anogenital predilection. Sweat gland carcinomas occurring in the armpit may pose a histomorphological challenge in distin

Sweat Gland Carcinoma With Lymphadenopathy.

Sweat gland carcinoma is a rare tumour, being almost 1% of primary skin lesions. The tumour has tendency to spread to regional lymph nodes and distant metastases has also been reported. Their exact incidence in Pakistan is not known. Treatment options are also not clearly defined though surgery is the initial treatment approach as adjuvant treatment has not been properly explored. We report a case of sweat gland carcinoma with lymphadenopathy.

Autofluorescence of eccrine sweat glands.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The monitoring of autofluorescence in skin tissue samples can have diagnostic and therapy significance. In this study, we are the first to describe autofluorescence of eccrine sweat glands, which is important and helpful for the diagnosis and therapy of diseases that involve the eccrine sweat glands. METHODS: Eccrine sweat gland autofluorescence in haematoxylin-eosin (HE) stained skin tissue sections was observed under a fluorescence microscope, which was compared to the immunofluorescence of keratin 19 and 15 in the skin tissue sections. The single eccrine sweat glands fr

Primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma.

Primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of malignant sweat gland lesions. It is characterized clinically with non-symptomatic, slow-growing nodules. We report the case of a patient with cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma with local recurrence and metastasis to the lung that was treated with surgical resection therapy and chemotherapy. The initial neoplasm was excised but biopsy was not performed. The tumor then recurred 7 years later, was re-excised, biopsy was performed, and diagnosed as a low-grade hidradenocarcinoma. We presented a very good result of chemotherapy in the tre
