To identify genetic determinants of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) virulence and host range, chimeras of the highly pathogenic Brescia strain and the attenuated vaccine strain CS were constructed and evaluated for viral virulence in swine. An increased level of the procoagulant activity (PCA) has been observed in porcine leukocytes in vitro infected with virulent or vaccine strains of hog cholera virus in comparison with intact cells. PCA was similarly induced in infected leukocytes from swine immune to hog cholera virus. Increased PCA levels were detected in culture medium with leukocytes from intact and immune animals infected in vitro with both virulent and vaccine strains of hog cholera virus in comparison with the PCA levels in culture medium with intact cells.

The pig is known as a "mixing vessel" for influenza A viruses. The co-circulation of multiple influenza A subtypes in pig populations can lead to novel reassortant strains. Seventeen cases of lymphoid neoplasms in swine were investigated and divided into eight histological types. In research on the reduplication of the pig gallbladder, a total of 297,531 swine from 130 breeders were surveyed at a slaughter house (Ozu Health Center, Ehime Prefecture, Japan) between October 1993 and December 1995.
