Data on human taeniasis and human and animal cysticercosis from Honduras were gathered from laboratory, medical and slaughterhouse records, proglottid identification and surveys. The infection rate for human taeniasis was 2.7/1000 individuals at the University Hospital, 10/1000 in the southern provinces of Choluteca and Valle, and 0.6/1000 in Cortes and Atlantida in the north. In surveys, the rates found ranged from 14 to 62/1000 in 9 of 15 communities studied. Taenia solium was identified in 135 of 181 individuals (74.5%) who submitted proglottids for speciation, 23 of whom were children 0-5 …

Cysticercosis is caused by the establishment of Taenia solium larvae in the central nervous system, skeletal muscle and eyes of humans and pigs, after ingestion of eggs shed in human feces by the adult tapeworm. Human cysticercosis is increasingly recognized as a public health problem, especially in developing countries, and swine cysticercosis may be an important economic drain to the meat industry. The adult tapeworm is found only in human beings. Recent epidemiological data indicate that the presence of a tapeworm carrier in the close environment is a greater risk factor for acquiring cysti

Taenia solium causes taeniasis and cysticercosis, a zoonotic complex associated with a significant burden of epilepsy in most countries. Reliable diagnosis and efficacious treatment of taeniasis are needed for disease control. Currently, cure can be confirmed only after a period of at least 1 month, by negative stool microscopy. This study assessed the performance of detection by a coproantigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (CoAg-ELISA) for the early evaluation of the efficacy of antiparasitic treatment of human T. solium taeniasis. We followed 69 tapeworm carriers who received niclosamide…

We report a case of 45-year-old male presenting with the history of nasal expulsion of segments of Taenia saginata. This route of expulsion is a rare occurrence. The report stresses this unusual presentation of taeniasis in endemic region.

Although Asian Taenia is closely related to T. saginata, it is a genetically distinct entity and can be distinguished from the classical T. saginata. Man is the only definite host of this parasite. The domestic pig and wild boar in Taiwan as well as domestic pig in Korea have been determined to be the natural intermediate hosts. Moreover, the pig has been demonstrated to be the most favorable experimental intermediate host. The cysticerci are situated mainly in the liver. They are smaller than T. saginata cysticerci and have a shorter developmental period of four weeks. The scolex of Asian Tae

Toeniids are large tapeworms, common throughout the world. Two species, Taenia saginata and T. solium are common parasites of man. The adult worms parasitize the small intestine, while immature stages (metacestodes or cysticerci) develop mainly in cattle in the case of T. saginata or pigs in the case of T. solium. Cysticerci of T. saginata rarely develop in man, although humans are easily infected with those of T. solium after eating raw or undercooked infected pork-producing the disease known as cysticercosis. In Taiwan, both the pork and beef tapeworms have been documented among aboriginal p
