Cationic lone-pair electrons are often associated with distinctive phonon properties (e.g., strong lattice anharmonicity) that lead to low lattice thermal conductivity (κ_{L}). However, the reliance on specific cations (e.g., Sb^{3+} or Ge^{2+}) severely restricts the broader applicability of this lone-pair-based strategy. In this Letter, anionic lone-pair-like electrons (LPEs) were successfully introduced in the high-symmetry diamondoid compound AgInSnSe_{4} through cation-deficient cross-substitution, achieving an ultralow κ_{L} of 0.23 W m^{-1} K^{-1} at 773 K. The LPEs of Se atoms signi…

Enhancing the thermal conductivity of polymer-based composites is critical for effective thermal management in power electronics. A common strategy involves incorporating high-thermal-conductivity fillers such as graphene and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS). However, practical enhancements often fall short of theoretical predictions due to interfacial thermal resistance (RKapitza). Here, we address this challenge by engineering the hydrogen bond density (HBD) at the filler-matrix interface. By grafting 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), we synthesized PVA-DX matric…

Owing to their unrivaled porosities and high surface areas, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise for mitigating the global war … dictating the heat transfer mechanisms in MOF-5. Compared to the empty framework, we find that the thermal conductivity of the gas loaded framework is highly dependent on the gas diffusivities and temperatures. At low temperatures, where the gases have low diffusivities and are predominantly adsorbed to the pore walls, vibrational scattering from the solid-gas intera …

We performed machine learning (ML) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to search for materials with low lattice thermal conductivity, κL. Several cadmium (Cd) compounds containing elements from the alkali metal and carbon groups including A2CdX (A = Li, Na, and K; X = Pb, Sn, and Ge) are predicted by our ML models to exhibit very low κL values (<1.0 W/mK), rendering these materials suitable for potential thermal management and insulation applications. Further DFT calculations of electronic and transport properties indicate that the figure of merit, ZT, for the thermoel…

This study investigates the effect of hemp shive granulometry on the thermal conductivity and microstructure of hemp-lime composites. Three distinct particle size fractions-fine, medium, and coarse-were characterized using high-resolution image analysis to determine geometric parameters such as Feret diameters, circularity, and elongation. Composite mixtures with varying binder-to-shive and water-to-shive ratios were prepared and compacted at a consistent level to isolate the influence of aggregate granulometry on thermal performance. Results demonstrate a clear inverse relationship between pa…

The determination of thermophysical parameters is crucial in the hydro-thermal coupling calculations of permafrost. Alpine meadows can affect the heat exchange inside and outside the soil due to the well-developed root, which can have an impact on the stability of permafrost. At present, the research on the thermal conductivity of alpine meadows is less, and most of the research focuses on the thermal conductivity of rock and soil. In this paper, according to the distribution and development characteristics of roots in the soil, a theoretical model of thermal conductivity of root-soil in alpin…

The incorporation of MOFs can potentially enhance the thermodynamic properties of the base fluid, thereby improving the efficiency of thermodynamics cycles. The thermal conductivity (λ) is an important thermophysical property of working fluid; however, the thermal conductivity mechanism of metal-organic heat carrier nanofluids (MOHCs) remains unclear. Here, λ of MIL-101(Cr)/ethanol nanofluids is investigated through experiments and molecular dynamic simulation. The experimental results demonstrate that the addition of MIL-101(Cr) improves the λ of the base fluid. Also, the λ of MOHCs was calcu…

The rapid miniaturization of electronic devices has exponentially increased power densities, making heat accumulation and transient thermal shocks primary bottlenecks. Phase-change thermal interface materials (PC-TIMs) offer a promising solution, but their application is hindered by low intrinsic thermal conductivity and liquid leakage. Furthermore, traditional outside-in impregnation strategies suffer from a severe trade-off between thermal conductivity enhancement and latent heat preservation. In this work, a hierarchical inside-out structural engineering strategy is proposed to fabricate a …

The interplay between coherent (wave-like) and incoherent (particle-like) phonon transport is central to heat conduction, yet experimental evidence of their crossover in bulk three-dimensional (3D) crystals remains scarce. Here, we report intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ([Formula: see text]) in the lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiCl6, reaching 0.52 and 0.28 W m-1 K-1 in single crystal and polycrystals, respectively, at room temperature. Combining thermal transport, low-temperature heat capacity, Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron x-ray pair distribution function analysis, a…

CO2 hydrate technology plays a pivotal role in carbon dioxide capture/storage, gas separation, and natural gas recovery from natural gas hydrates, while simultaneously serving as a cost-effective phase-change material for thermal energy storage. The thermal transport characteristics of CO2 hydrates are of particular importance in these promising applications. Here, the role of CO2 molecular occupancy and external electric fields on the thermal conductivity (κ) of sI-type CO2 hydrates is explored using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Results reveal that increasing CO2 occupancy in l…

A series of novolac phenolic polymeric networks (NPPN) were prepared via an acid-catalyzed polycondensation reaction of formaldehyde with chalcones possessing a p-phenolic OH group. When p-hydroxybenzaldehyde was treated with formaldehyde under the same conditions, a phenolic polymer (PP) was obtained. The resulting polymers were isolated in excellent yields (83-98%). Isolated polymers (NPPN, PP) were characterized using FTIR, TGA, and XRD. The results obtained from the TGA revealed that all prepared phenolic polymers have high thermal stability at high temperatures and can act as thermosettin

Dynamic covalent networks are a class of polymers containing exchangeable bonds. The influence of the thermodynamics and kinetics of dynamic bond exchange on the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of dynamic networks is important for understanding how they differ from thermoplastics and thermosets. In this work, a series of ethylene dynamic networks are synthesized from benzene diboronic acid and alkane diols with different precise ethylene linker lengths. The thermal conductivity of these ethylene dynamic networks at 40 °C decreases from 0.19 to 0.095 W/(m K) when the ethylene lin…

In materials science, the substructure approach consists in imagining complex materials in which a particular property is associated with a distinct structural feature, so as to combine different chosen physical characteristics, which otherwise have little chance to coexist. Applied to thermoelectric materials, it has been used to achieve simultaneously phonon-glass and electron-crystal properties. Mostly studied for its superionic conductivity, AgCrSe2 is a naturally layered compound, which achieves very low thermal conductivity, ~0.4 W.K(-1).m(-1) at RT (room temperature), and is considered …

Binary zinc and cadmium antimonides and their ternary relatives with indium display complex crystal structures, but reveal at the same time … tron-poor antimonides show promising thermoelectric properties, especially through a remarkably low thermal conductivity. At the same time the thermal stability of these compounds is rather limited because of temperature polymorphism and/or comparatively low melting or decomposition temperatures (usually below 600 K).

Identifying materials with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κL) underpins thermoelectric and phase-change technologies, yet simple structural descriptors often fail to capture how chemical bonding controls lattice dynamics. Here, we compare thermal transport in two BeO polymorphs of identical chemistry and atomic mass: covalent zincblende (zb) and metavalent-like rocksalt (rs). Despite being denser, rs-BeO exhibits a κL more than an order of magnitude below zb-BeO (24 vs 357 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K), breaking the conventional density-κL correlation. Ab initio bonding analysis traces …

The demand for materials combining high strength with exceptional thermal conductivity is growing across aerospace, automotive, thermal management and energy applications. Graphene offers an ideal building block, but multiscale defects such as disordered stacking and voids prevent macroscopic assemblies from realizing its intrinsic properties. Here we show that ultrahigh-ratio draw spinning, enabled by the polymer-like viscoelasticity of two-dimensional sheets in viscous solvents, produces graphene fibres with a tensile strength of 5.9 GPa, a Young modulus of 963 GPa, a thermal conductivity of…

Improving the thermal conductivity of polymer/carbonaceous nanocomposites is still an interesting topic and is affected by a number of factors, such as polymer/nanofiller interaction, dispersion quality and agglomerate formation. In the present work, several polymer/nanocomposite types based on two different linear low-density polyethylenes (LLDPEs), as well as polylactic acid (PLA), reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or a combination of CNTs/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with graphene oxide (GO) at various loadings were investigated. The thermal diffusivity results for monofiller and hybrid n…

To overcome the low thermal conductivity and flow channel clogging inherent in traditional phase change materials (PCMs) for immersion cooling, this study develops a novel oil-based phase change emulsion (PCE) integrating high thermal transport with adaptive rheological behavior. A liquid thermal conductivity enhancer was synthesized by modifying epoxidized soybean oil with LiTFSI and blending it with a synthetic ester to form a dielectric base fluid. A mid-to-low-temperature PCM (Span65) was then incorporated via surfactant-free ultrasonic emulsification. The resulting PCE exhibits a tunable …

Strain engineering provides a versatile route for continuously tuning thermal conductivity. In this work, using spin-polarized density functional theory in conjunction with the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we reveal that a small biaxial tensile strain can significantly increase the thermal conductivity of the planar 2D ferromagnetic NiI2 through suppression of spin-phonon coupling, identifying a distinct magnetic mechanism for strain-controlled thermal transport. At 21 K, only 0.4% biaxial tensile strain enhances the thermal conductivity from 0.61 to 3.71 W/(mK). This improvement origi…
