[Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis): current diagnostics and therapy].

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common autoimmune thyroid disease with preference of female gender. The chronic thyroiditis is characterized by autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin. With manifestation, there is often a subclinical hypothyroidism that finally progresses to a persistent hypothyroidism with typical clinical symptoms and the need of hormonal substitution in succession of the lymphocytic infiltration of the thyroid. The ultrasound of the thyroid shows a hypoechogenic and inhomogeneous parenchyma. Autoimmune thyroiditis is frequently associated with autoimmune di

Autoimmune thyroiditis with transient thyrotoxicosis: comparison between painful thyroiditis and painless thyroiditis.

Clinical and laboratory findings and long-term outcomes in 8 patients (7 women) with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT), aged 34-59 years, who had a painful tender goiter and a transient thyrotoxicosis with a low thyroid radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU), were compared with those in 15 patients (13 women) with painless thyroiditis (PT), aged 23-69 years. Six painful AT and 6 PT patients had a history of prior awareness of goiter. All patients with painful AT had a moderate or marked elevation of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and a positive result for C-reactive protein, while only 3 PT patients (grou

Autoimmune thyroiditis - track towards autoimmune polyendocrinopathy type III.

Autoimmune polyendocrinopathies are rare diseases characterized by the coexistence of at least two endocrine diseases linked to an autoimmune mechanism, however sometimes are associated with non-endocrine autoimmune diseases. They are divided into two main subgroups: autoimmune polyendocrinopathy type I and polyendocrinopathies type II-IV. We report a case of a 53-year-old female patient followed for 2 years for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. On admission, she was complaining of polyuropolydipsic syndrome, asthenia, weight loss, abdominal pain and vomiting. The clinical examination noted a dehydrate

Autoimmune Thyroiditis Shifting from Hashimoto's Thyroiditis to Graves' Disease.

In 15-20% of cases, Graves' disease (GD) shifts to Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), while the shift from HT to GD is rare. We present a case of a patient in whom HT shifted to GD, along with a literature review. A 50-year-old woman with myxedema was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease due to hypothyroidism and the presence of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin (TgAb); she also had thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSAb) without any signs of GD. Although thyroid hormone replacement therapy improved her thyroid function, 2 months later, hyperthyroidism appeared and did not

Animal models for autoimmune myocarditis and autoimmune thyroiditis.

This chapter describes four murine models of autoimmune diseases: two related to autoimmune myocarditis and two related to autoimmune thyroiditis. The first model, Coxsackie virus B3 (CB3)-induced myocarditis, results in the development of acute myocarditis in susceptible as well as resistant mouse strains, whereas chronic myocarditis develops only in genetically susceptible mice. CB3-induced myocarditis closely resembles the course of human myocarditis, which is believed to be initiated by viral infection. Mouse cardiac myosin heavy chain has been identified as the major antigen associated wi

Autoimmune thyroiditis (review of literature).

Autoimmune thyroiditis is a group of organ-specific autoimmune thyropathies, which are caused by a genetically determined defect in immune tolerance to thyroid antigens, as a result of which its autoimmune damage occurs. The aim of the study was to analyze literature data on the pathogenetic role of genetic and biochemical parameters in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.

Autoimmune Thyroiditis Presenting as Psychosis.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a rare condition associated mainly with neurological symptoms. It contains an abundant amount of auto-antibodies in the blood. Only a few cases of behavioral symptoms without significant neurological disturbances have been recorded in the literature. In this view, our case is unique as it was not associated with overt hypothyroid manifestations.

SELENIUM STATUS IN AUTOIMMUNE THYROIDITIS.

UNLABELLED: Selenium (Se) is an important element that exerts its effects through selenoproteins. The thyroid gland has the highest Se concentration and specific selenoprotein enzymes families are crucial in the thyroid hormone metabolism. There is little evidence on the link between Se and thyroid autoimmune disease, therefore future studies are required to elucidate the nature of this associ ation. AIM: To evaluate the Se status in euthyroid subjects with autoimmune thyroiditis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2014 to January 2015 we recruited 100 consecutive euthyroid subjects with aut

Anatabine ameliorates experimental autoimmune thyroiditis.

Tobacco smoking favorably influences the course of Hashimoto thyroiditis, possibly through the antiinflammatory proprieties of nicotine. In this study we tested anatabine, another tobacco alkaloid, in a model of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis. Experimental autoimmune thyroiditis was induced by different doses of thyroglobulin, to produce a disease of low, moderate, or high severity, in 88 CBA/J female mice: 43 drank anatabine supplemented water and 45 regular water. Mice were bled after immunization and killed to assess thyroid histopathology, thyroglobulin antibodies, T(4), and thyroid R

Chronic urticaria and autoimmune thyroiditis.

GOAL: Idiopathic chronic urticaria may be associated to other auto-immune diseases, in particular thyroiditis. The goal of our study is to show that this association is higher than the incidence of auto-immune thyroiditis in the general population. METHODS: It is a retrospective observational study including 90 patients with chronic urticaria. We calculated the proportion of patients having associated auto-immune thyroiditis based on a level of anti-TPO >220 mUI/ml. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 36.7 years with a sex ratio F/H of 2.9/1. The anti-TPO antibodies were positive in 16 pat

Environmental factors and autoimmune thyroiditis.

Autoimmune thyroiditis, of which Hashimoto thyroiditis represents the most frequent form, is an inflammatory state of the thyroid gland that results from the interaction between genetic variants that promote susceptibility and environmental factors. High iodine intake, selenium deficiency, pollutants such as tobacco smoke, infectious diseases such as chronic hepatitis C, and certain drugs are implicated in the development of autoimmune thyroiditis, primarily in genetically predisposed people. Long-term iodine exposure leads to increased iodination of thyroglobulin, which increases its antigeni
