Red Meat Allergies after Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum) Bites.

Red meat allergies have followed tick bites on every continent except Antarctica. The sensitizing antigen is galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal), an oligosaccharide constituent of nonprimate blood and meat, acquired by ticks during animal bloodfeeding. Because red meat allergy after tick bites is a worldwide phenomenon, the objectives of this review were to describe the global epidemiology of red meat allergy after tick bites and its immunological mechanisms; to identify the human risk factors for red meat allergy after tick bites; to identify the most common tick vectors of red meat allergy wor…

Prevention of tick bites: an evaluation of a smartphone app.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common reported tick-borne infection in Europe, and involves transmission of Borrelia by ticks. As long as a vaccine is not available and effective measures for controlling tick populations are insufficient, LB control is focused on preventive measures to avoid tick bites. To inform citizens about the risk of ticks, motivate them to check for tick bites, and encourage them to remove any attached tick as quickly as possible, a mobile app called 'Tekenbeet' (Dutch for 'tick bite') was developed and released. The aim of this study was to evaluate the …

Tick bites and Lyme disease: the need for timely treatment.

In the United States, 30,158 people were reported as having contracted Lyme disease during 2010; 96% of the cases in 2011 were reported from 13 northeast and north-central states. Time of tick attachment is a critical factor. Prolonged attachment allows time for a bacterium to move from tick to human. Patient history and meticulous skin inspection are the most important elements used in diagnosis of Lyme disease. The most common drug for treatment is doxycycline. Ticks find their hosts by several senses: odor, moisture, heat, and vibration. Avoidance of tick-infested areas, such as wooded area

[A seasonal neurologic disease: paralysis following tick-bites (author's transl)].

Seasonal inflammatory neurologic disorders following tick-bites have been reported more and more often during the last few years. They usually consist in a peripheral neurologic syndrome. However, involvement of the central nervous system is not uncommon. Two new cases seen at the Val-de-Grâce Hospital are reported here. The author reviews the circumstances in which the disease occurs and it's clinical features. The course is variable and may result in serious sequelae. Pathogenesis remains unknown. Viral, toxinic, and immuno-allergic factors have been incriminated. Practitioners should consid

Linking human tick bite risk with tick abundance in the environment: A novel approach to quantify tick bite risk using orienteers in Scotland.

The rate that people are bitten by ticks is critical in determining the risk of tick-borne infections but is rarely quantified accurately. Often tick abundance in the environment is used as a proxy for tick bite risk, but the relationship with risk is poorly understood. We used a novel citizen science approach to measure tick bite rate in orienteers, to assess the relationship between tick abundance and tick bite risk and to identify risk factors for tick bites. Eleven orienteering events were attended in Scotland between August 2018 and September 2019. The number of tick bites in orienteers, …

Tick Bite Alopecia: A Report and Review.

Tick bites can cause a number of local inflammatory reactions, which are often difficult to differentiate from those induced by other arthropod bites or stings. These include erythematous nodular or pustular lesions, erosive plaques, annular lesions of erythema chronicum migrans, and both scarring and nonscarring inflammatory alopecia. We report a case of nonscarring alopecia in a 21-year-old male who reported a recent history of tick bite to the scalp. The biopsy demonstrated a dense pseudolymphomatous inflammatory infiltrate with numerous eosinophils associated with hair follicle miniaturiza…

Tick-bite-induced anaphylaxis in Spain.

Although there are very few reports of human anaphylaxis induced by tick bites, two such cases have recently been seen in Salamanca, Spain. To identify the tick species responsible, salivary-gland extracts from six species of hard tick and two of soft tick were prepared and used as allergens/antigens in skin-prick tests and serological analyses. For each case, the results of the skin tests were positive for several species of hard tick but negative for the soft ticks. ELISA and western blots revealed high titres of IgG against hard ticks (but not soft ticks) in the sera from both cases. Howeve…

[Tularemia after tick bite in Vestfold].

Direct contact with rodents or their faeces is a well-known risk factor for contracting tularaemia in Norway. Both insects and ticks can act as vectors of tularaemia, but transmission by this route has not previously been described in this country. We report three cases of serologically confirmed ulceroglandular tularaemia on a small island in Southern Norway, an area in which tularaemia has not previously been known to occur. Tick bites preceded infection in two of the patients. The third patient may also have become infected through a tick or insect bite. Diagnosis was made late in all cases…

A case of tick bite on the perianal region.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Tickborne diseases have become the threats to the health of people worldwide, accounting for nearly 80% patients with vectorborne diseases in the United States. Early diagnosis and proper treatment play a significant role in the management. Close contacts should be screened for delayed symptoms associated with tickborne diseases. ABSTRACT: This study describes a rare case of a 72-year-old Chinese man presented with a 5-day history of painful nodules on the perianal region, indicating tick bite. Tickborne diseases become the threats to the health of people worldwide. Untr

[Viral encephalitis after tick bite].

TBE is caused by a Flavivirus and is endemic in certain areas of Central and Eastern Europe, such as Austria, the south of Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the former Yugoslavia and SNG and certain areas of Sweden and Finland. Recent developments in the Eastern European countries have made them popular with Danish travellers, who are thus exposed to infection. Until now TBE has been a very rare disease in Denmark. The clinical course is biphasic being preceded by an incubation period of ten days. After the initial phase with uncharacteristic symptoms, a period af about five days follo

[South African tick bite fever].

Two male patients developed South African tick bite fever after visits to South Africa. The clinical and laboratory findings in this condition, which is rarely seen in central Europe, are presented and its differential diagnosis to other rickettsial diseases is discussed.

[Tick-bite meningoradiculitis (author's transl)].

Meningoradiculitis due to tick-bite is rare and poorly documented. Its etiology remains hypothetical, but is thought to be caused by a viral infection carried by the tick. It is characterized by a striking clinical picture, especially symptoms of a subjective nature. The involved area extends asymmetrically from the site of the bite with variable latency. The CSF is characteristic, showing definite lymphocytosis and a moderate protein reaction. The prognosis is excellent although recovery may take several months. In the event of facial paralysis, there is a risk of postparalytic spasms. Treatm
