[Somatosensoric tinnitus].

Tinnitus can be caused or triggered by functional disorders of the cervical spine, temporomandibular joint or any other musculoskeletal structure of the neck or head. This special form of tinnitus is called somatosensory tinnitus and represents a discrete subgroup among the different kinds of tinnitus. Distinctive for this kind of tinnitus are alterations in volume and frequency during movement or the stimulation of certain muscles and joints. This can be evaluated using a structured testing method. To be able to easily perceive tinnitus modulations, the test must be performed in total silence…

Tinnitus and tinnitus disorder: Genetic, neurobiological, and clinical differentiation.

Tinnitus is the conscious perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic source. When accompanied by emotional distress, cognitive dysfunction, or autonomic arousal leading to behavioral and functional impairment, it is termed "tinnitus disorder." This perspective synthesizes genetic, epidemiological, and neuroimaging evidence supporting the distinction between tinnitus and tinnitus disorder. Genetic studies indicate that tinnitus is linked to multiple common variants of small effect size, whereas tinnitus disorder involves rarer variants exerting larger effects. Epidemiologically,…

Sound-evoked plasticity differentiates tinnitus from non-tinnitus mice.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the perception of non-meaningful sound in the absence of external stimuli. Although tinnitus behavior in animal models is associated with altered central nervous system activity, it is not currently possible to identify tinnitus using neuronal activity alone. In the mouse inferior colliculus (IC), a subpopulation of neurons demonstrates a sustained increase in spontaneous activity after a long-duration sound (LDS). METHODS: Here, we use the "LDS test" to reveal tinnitus-specific differences in sound-evoked plasticity through IC extracellular recordings and the audito…

Does Listening to Tinnitus Frequency-Filtered Music Relieve Tinnitus?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus frequency-filtered music therapy aims to restore lateral inhibition to reverse tonotopic reorganization in the auditory cortex. Although the tinnitus-relieving effect of this therapy has been investigated, the results remain controversial. We performed a prospective, randomized, controlled double-blind study to determine the tinnitus-suppressing effect of tinnitus frequency-filtered music therapy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 90 participants who were randomly categorized into an experimental group that listened to tinnitus frequency-filtered mus…

Somatic tinnitus prevalence and treatment with tinnitus retraining therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Somatic tinnitus originates from increased activity of the dorsal cochlear nucleus, a cross-point between the somatic and auditory systems. Its activity can be modified by auditory stimulation or somatic system manipulation. Thus, sound enrichment and white noise stimulation might decrease tinnitus and associated somatic symptoms. The present uncontrolled study sought to determine somatic tinnitus prevalence among tinnitus sufferers, and to investigate whether sound therapy with counselling (tinnitus retraining therapy; TRT) may decrease tinnitus-associated somatic symptoms. METHO…

Prefrontal cortex based sex differences in tinnitus perception: same tinnitus intensity, same tinnitus distress, different mood.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus refers to auditory phantom sensation. It is estimated that for 2% of the population this auditory phantom percept severely affects the quality of life, due to tinnitus related distress. Although the overall distress levels do not differ between sexes in tinnitus, females are more influenced by distress than males. Typically, pain, sleep, and depression are perceived as significantly more severe by female tinnitus patients. Studies on gender differences in emotional regulation indicate that females with high depressive symptoms show greater attention to emotion, and use les…

Tinnitus mechanisms and the need for an objective electrophysiological tinnitus test.

Tinnitus, the perception of sound with no external auditory stimulus, is a complex, multifaceted, and potentially devastating disorder. Despite recent advances in our understanding of tinnitus, there are limited options for effective treatment. Tinnitus treatments are made more complicated by the lack of a test for tinnitus based on objectively measured physiological characteristics. Such an objective test would enable a greater understanding of tinnitus mechanisms and may lead to faster treatment development in both animal and human research. This review makes the argument that an objective t…
