CT and MR imaging are of minor importance for the preoperative diagnosis of rectosigmoid carcinoma. A synchronous colon tumor can be excluded with a barium enema, while an accurate diagnosis of liver metastases is possible using real-time ultrasonography. However, post-operative management requires the use of tomographic methods: MR imaging has proved to be more accurate than CT for differentiation between local recurrence and post-operative scars. Therefore MRI should be the method of choice after surgery for rectosigmoid carcinoma in all patients without postoperative baseline examinations.

Unlike dual x-ray absorptiometry and high-resolution CT scan and MR imaging techniques, which are largely restricted to the peripheral skeleton owing to radiation dose and signal-to-noise considerations, volumetric quantitative measures provide measures of cortical and trabecular volumetric bone mineral density, cross-sectional geometry, and estimates of whole-bone strength based on patient specific finite element modeling. This article focuses on the application of volumetric quantitative measures to studies of aging, disuse, and drug treatment as related to osteoporosis.

Spiral computed tomography angiography is a relatively new noninvasive technique capable of rapid imaging of the carotid artery. Computed tomography angiography usually is performed in a 30-second scan time and images iodinated contrast as it fills the vascular lumen. Studies comparing computed tomography angiography with conventional angiography show sensitivities and specificities that rival any of the other noninvasive imaging techniques for the detection of carotid artery stenosis and occlusion.

Twenty-one patients with epiphora were examined by conventional dacryocystography, using Lipiodol as a contrast medium, and CT dacryocystography, using a water soluble contrast medium. In the latter, the material was not introduced under pressure but three or four drops were administered, providing a physiological method of investigation. Subsequently, CT dacryocystography provides functional information about lacrimal disorders and is easy to use.
