Evidence suggests that patients suffer the painful symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity when dentine is exposed and the dentinal tubule system is opened to the oral cavity to allow stimuli to trigger a neural response in the pulp via a hydrodynamic mechanism. The processes needed to localise lesions of dentine hypersensitivity include loss of enamel and/or gingival recession. Whilst tooth brushing with or without toothpaste appears to cause minimal wear to enamel (in the absence of acids), circumstantial evidence implicates tooth brushing with gingival recession and exposure of dentine. BACKGROUND: Tooth Wear results from multiple mechanisms, including erosion (chemical loss), attrition (tooth-to-tooth contact), and abrasion (mechanical wear), represent an emerging concern among young individuals (Li MHM, Bernabé E. J Dent. 55:48-53, 2016). The severity of Tooth Wear can be measured using the Tooth Wear Index, which scores each tooth surface from 0 to 4. With time this mechanism can proceed to visible lesions on the tooth surface; these lesions may cause dysfunction, increase sensitivity, and disfigure facial appearance. Understanding the role of target population, behavioral

OBJECTIVES: One role of dental pulp is in the upkeep and maintenance of dentine. Under wear, odontoblasts in the pulp deposit tertiary dentine to ensure the sensitive internal dental tissues are not exposed and vulnerable to infection. It follows that there may be an adaptive advantage for increasing molar pulp volume in anthropoid primate taxa that are prone to high levels of wear. The relative volume of dental pulp is therefore predicted to covary with dietary abrasiveness (in the sense of including foods that cause high degrees of wear).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined relatively unworn

Tooth substance loss, an increasing problem, may result from erosion, abrasion and attrition, often with more than one of these acting together. Investigation requires a detailed history and examination. The aim of treatment may be prevention of further damage in less affected cases. The treatment of severe tooth substance loss may be complex, especially in view of the reduced amounts of tooth substance which may be available and the need to find space because of the compensatory over-eruption of worn teeth.

Tooth wear is becoming more common in both adults and children. The triad of attrition, abrasion and erosion has been known for many years, but the contribution of erosion (irreversible loss of dental hard tissue due to a chemical process not involving bacteria, or the loss of tooth surface not directly associated with mechanical or traumatic factors or caries) to excessive loss of tooth tissue is now being emphasized. The authors of this paper examine the problem and suggest ways of overcoming it.

The abrasion strength of the exogenous pellicle (EP) was investigated in in vitro experiments on extracted human teeth. The aim of the study was to elucidate the effect of daily brushing on the EP. EP-coated tooth specimens were cleansed under in vivo-like conditions. Five toothpastes with different degrees of abrasiveness were variously diluted with artificial saliva. The evaluation was done on the transmission electron microscope. The individual toothpastes differed significantly with respect to their abrasive effect on EP, which extended from only a slight effect on EP, which extended from

Dental microwear was recorded in a Bronze-Iron Age (3570-3000 BP) sample of modern humans recovered from Tell es-Sa'idiyeh in the Jordan Valley. Microwear patterns were compared between mandibular molars, and between the upper and lower part of facet 9. The comparison revealed a greater frequency of pits and shorter scratches on the second and third molars, compared to the first. Pit frequency also increased on the lower part of the facet on the first molar, compared to the upper part. These results support previous calls for standardization when selecting a molar type for a diet-microwear stu

Background/Objectives: Toothbrushing is a recommended daily practice that helps sustain oral health. However, if performed improperly, it can lead to loss of tooth structure and injury to soft tissues. We explored this topic with an extensive literature search. Methods: A literature search was performed across textbooks and journals for original research and review articles in Scopus, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Cochrane databases, published between 1967 and 2024. Results: The search result yielded 118 articles that were suitable to include in this review. Toothpaste abrasivity plays a major r

Anthropologists have for many years considered human tooth wear a normal physiological phenomenon where teeth, although worn, remain functional throughout life. Wear was considered pathological only if pulpal exposure or premature tooth loss occurred. In addition, adaptive changes to the stomatognathic system in response to wear have been reported including continual eruption, the widening of the masticatory cycle, remodelling of the temporomandibular joint and the shortening of the dental arches from tooth migration. Comparative studies of many different species have also documented these phy

If the hydrodynamic theory of stimulus transmission across dentine is valid, sensitive dentine has tubules open at the surface and patent to the pulp. Direct and indirect evidence supports this supposition. Factors that result in dentine exposure remove the covering enamel or periodontal tissues (gingival recession). Epidemiological and clinical data for the distribution of exposed cervical dentine indicate that chronic trauma from physical and chemical factors is the most significant aetiological factor. Brushing with a toothpaste may not open dentinal tubules. It is more likely that toothpas

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the amount of dentifrice (dose) used per brushing affects the abrasion of the hard tooth tissues.
METHODS: Enamel and dentin specimens were subjected to simulated brushing with two commercial dentifrices (Prodent, Smyle dentifrice in tablet form) and positive as well as negative controls at varying amounts of dentifrices (standard dose, half, and double dose). Brushing without dentifrice (with water) functioned as a negative control. Tooth wear was quantified using profilometry, and statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tes

Sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) as toothpaste additive is claimed to reduce erosive tooth wear and to stabilize stannous ions. However, little is known about the impact of concentration and its interactions with fluoride (F) or stannous+fluoride ions (F/Sn) on enamel erosion and erosion-abrasion. In a 10 day cyclic in vitro erosion-abrasion model, 320 flat human enamel specimens were divided into ten groups (n = 32 each) and daily subjected to six erosive challenges (0.5% citric acid, 2 min) and two toothpaste suspension applications (2 min, 1:3 F-free toothpaste:mineral-salt solution, 0.23% so

Rodent incisors grow throughout adult life, but are prevented from becoming excessively long by constant abrasion, which is facilitated by the absence of enamel on one side of the incisor. Here we report that loss-of-function of sprouty genes, which encode antagonists of receptor tyrosine kinase signaling, leads to bilateral enamel deposition, thus impeding incisor abrasion and resulting in unchecked tooth elongation. We demonstrate that sprouty genes function to ensure that enamel-producing ameloblasts are generated on only one side of the tooth by inhibiting the formation of ectopic amelobla

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear encompasses the loss of dental hard tissues through processes including attrition, abrasion and erosion. Previous studies have identified potential associations with age, sex, salivary characteristics, socioeconomic factors and bruxism; however, findings remain inconsistent and often based on single-factor analyses. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with tooth wear, with emphasis on subject‑based bruxism, and to evaluate the relative contribution of bruxism in relation to demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and functional factors using a multivariate a

Besides prevention of caries and periodontitis, an increasing number of oral care products focus on teeth whitening. The aim of this review is to summarize and discuss frequently used whitening agents and their efficacy from a chemical viewpoint. Therefore, a comprehensive literature survey on teeth whitening agents and products was conducted. The current whitening methods are analyzed and discussed from a chemist's viewpoint. Frequently used whitening agents are abrasives (mechanical removal of stains), antiredeposition agents (prevention of deposition of chromophores), colorants (intended to
