Histological assessment of pulp condition after apical vital root transection in one root of multirooted teeth in dogs: a preliminary study.

One of the most important aspects in surgery is the healing process after the periapical surgery. Past studies have shown occasional encounters with vital root resection and have noted varying degrees of pulpal response after root resection in periodontal disease. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the pulpal and periapical responses to intentional apical vital root transection in one root of multirooted teeth of German-Canadian dogs over a 6-month postoperative period. This is an experimental study performed on left maxillary and mandibular quadrants of four adult German-Canadia

Combined surgical and conservative endodontic management of Oehler's type 3b dens invaginatus aided by guided tissue regeneration.

The present case describes the successful healing of a periapical lesion associated with the left maxillary lateral incisor (# 22, Federation Dentaire Internationale) having a type 3b dens invaginatus tooth morphology. The treatment was complicated by the presence of blunderbuss root apex and large periapical lesion (>10 mm) with through and through bone defect (Bucco palatal cortical bone perforation, Von Arx Type 1b). An adolescent boy reported palatal swelling and pus discharge in relation to tooth #22. A thorough clinical and radiographic examination revealed tooth #22 as having a type 3b

A clinical follow-up study of 278 autotransplanted teeth.

This open study was undertaken to investigate the outcome of autotransplanted teeth over a 6-year period. The subjects were 296 patients who underwent autotransplantation in the 6-year period September 1986-August 1992 and outcome was measured by considering root formation, occlusion, endodontal and periodontal complications. 18 patients were excluded because of inadequate notes or radiographs (n = 3) or because they were lost to follow-up (n = 15). The groups were divided into open apex and closed apex, and duration of follow up was 6 months-5 years. Aplasia was the indication for operation i

Measurement of orthodontic tooth movement in lower anterior teeth by means of magnetic resonance imaging- a prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: During orthodontic treatment, the risk of gingival recession may increase, especially in the mandibular anterior region due to thin alveolar bone. This prospective pilot study aimed to develop a standardized evaluation method based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for analysing tooth movements and tissue dimensions and to investigate the impact on periodontal parameters during orthodontic levelling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants aged 12 to 18 with lower jaw crowding underwent MRI scans before (T0) and five months into orthodontic treatment (T1). The following tissue dimen

Microbiological aspects of traumatic injuries.

After traumatic injuries to teeth, microorganisms may invade the compromised pulp tissue and initiate pulp infection and periapical inflammation. In addition to bone resorption that typically accompanies pulp necrosis, root resorption frequently occurs. Root resorption has several variants that may occur shortly after the trauma or at a later stage. The pathological changes seen after traumatic injuries to teeth are invariably linked to the presence of microbial irritants. The presence of bacterial biofilms in the dental pulp space can be treated with regenerative or therapeutic endodontic pro

Topographical evaluation of the major apical foramen in permanent human teeth.

AIM: To determine the distance from the anatomical root apex to the major apical foramen and the position of the major foramen on the root apex. METHODOLOGY: Crowns of 926 human teeth were sectioned at the cementum-enamel junction. Specimens were mounted on microscope slides for measurement parallel to the long axis of the teeth. The major foramen was identified as the largest-diameter opening at the root apex. A total of 1331 root specimens were evaluated using an optical stereomicroscope to an accuracy of 0.01 mm at 40 x (+/-10) magnification. The distance from the anatomical apex to the mo

Gross extrusion of endodontic obturation materials into the maxillary sinus: a case report.

A gross extrusion of endodontic obturation materials occurred from tooth 3 into the right maxillary sinus. The patient had never been conscious of uncomfortable symptoms, both at tooth 3 or buccal regions. A computed tomographic (CT) scan showed cord-like foreign substances extruded from the apex of the tooth and the hyperplasticity of the sinal mucosa. The surgical removal of foreign substances and partial curettage of sinal mucosa were indicated to prevent the possibility of sinus infection. At the 4-month recall, the patient was symptom free. This case emphasizes that an open apex can becom

Unique anatomy of a rare type II dens invaginatus in a maxillary lateral incisor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus (DI) is a developmental anomaly arising from excessive proliferation or distortion of the enamel organ during tooth formation, often leading to the creation of a pocket or dead space within the tooth. This report presents a case of Type II DI in a maxillary lateral incisor with unique anatomy, diagnosed through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and further analyzed with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) post-extraction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old male patient presented with recurrent pain and gingival swelling around the apex of tooth #22 for 12 months

Idiopathic root resorption: report of a case.

A case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption in a 26-yr-old female patient is presented. A review of the literature revealed that extensive idiopathic root resorption is unusual. Neither local nor systemic etiological factors were found in our case. Examination of parents and siblings did not reveal a familiar tendency. Radiographs and clinical evaluation showed a very poor prognosis for most of the teeth present in the mouth of our patient.

Clinical management of the avulsed tooth.

Treatment outside the dental office: Replant immediately after gentle washing if practical. If replantation is not practical, store the tooth in the best medium available. Storage media in order of preference are Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS), milk, saline, and saliva (buccal vestibule). Water is the least desirable storage medium. Treatment in the office: Emergency visit; Place tooth in HBSS while exam is conducted and history is taken. Prepare socket for gentle repositioning of the tooth. Prepare the root. Extraoral dry time < 20 minutes: Closed apex--replant immediately after gentle

The Apical Tooth Replantation with Surgical Intrusion Technique (ATR-SIT) for the Regenerative Treatment of Hopeless Teeth: A Report of Two Cases.

The present clinical report introduces a novel surgical procedure, the apical tooth replantation with surgical intrusion technique (ATR-SIT), for managing teeth with a hopeless prognosis compromised with a severe endoperiodontal lesion, pathologic tooth migration, and gingival recession. Two cases are presented that manage teeth diagnosed with a hopeless prognosis. ATR-SIT involves tooth extraction, extraoral root debridement, root surface conditioning, apicoectomy, retrograde filling, and the application of enamel matrix derivatives prior to reimplantation. Following reimplantation, the teeth

Deposition of calcified tissue around an overextended gutta-percha cone: case report.

Root canal treatment was performed in a mandibular right second premolar with a periapical lesion and apical resorption. The root canal was prepared with K-files using the step-back technique and 3% NaOCl as an irrigant; during obturation gross overfilling of gutta-percha occurred. The tooth was permanently restored with a post and core along with a crown. Although healing of the periapical lesion occurred and the patient reported that he was symptom-free, the tooth was extracted after 4 years because of a subgingival root fracture. Following extraction the tooth was examined with SEM. The exa

Outcomes of dental autotransplantation in relation to dental root formation. Systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Dental autotransplantation (DAT) is a surgical procedure used to replace hopeless or missing teeth. The technique entails the purposeful extraction of a desired sound tooth, which is then implanted into another alveolar site of the same oral cavity. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the survival rates and success rates of DAT in relation to donor teeth with an incomplete root development (open apex) and complete root formation (closed apex). Additionally, it attempts to evaluate the prognostic components of DAT with infection-related (inflammatory) root resorption, ankylosis, and pulpal ne
