This review article aimed to evaluate ocular biometric changes after trabeculectomy. The PubMed database was searched using the keywords "axial length" (AL), "anterior chamber depth" (ACD), "corneal astigmatism," "corneal topography" and "trabeculectomy." The extracted studies were categorized based on the evaluated parameters and the biometry method (contact and non-contact). Comparable studies with respect to their sample size were combined for statistical analysis. Twenty-five studies including 690 individuals which met the inclusion criteria were selected. After trabeculectomy, a significa

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of epiretinal membranes (ERM) in eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma subjected to trabeculectomy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on patients subjected to trabeculectomy with at least a 6-month follow-up. Ophthalmologic examination and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) were analyzed. Eyes with previous surgical or laser treatments or other pathologies (other than glaucoma and ERM) were excluded.
RESULTS: A total of 50 eyes (40 patients) were included in this study. The mean follow-up time after surgery was 27.8 months. Aft

A 56-year-old woman with a history of trabeculectomy in both eyes sustained blunt trauma to the right eye at home. She initially presented with pain, loss of vision, total hyphema, and hypotony with no evidence of rupture or tissue prolapse. Prompt anterior chamber wash out revealed a partially subluxated crystalline lens behind the pupil, but the globe was intact. At 1 month postoperatively, subconjunctival displacement of the crystalline lens was detected. The patient gave a history of severe bouts of coughing and sneezing a few days earlier. During removal of phacocele, the trabeculectomy w

AIM: Assessment of trabeculectomy in South-East Scotland (SESTS) with comparison to National Survey of Trabeculectomy (NST) and outcomes of consultant and trainee surgery.
METHOD: A retrospective study of 304 consecutive, primary trabeculectomies, in two Scottish centres (Edinburgh and Dunfermline) with two glaucoma specialists and higher surgical trainees, was performed. The study group had primary open angle glaucoma (65.5%), pseudoexfoliation (6.9%), normal tension glaucoma (7.6%), pigment dispersion syndrome (1.6%), and other complicated glaucoma (18.4%). All patients underwent trabeculec

PURPOSE: The author attempted to avoid ocular hypotony following a mitomycin-C trabeculectomy by controlling the interval between surgery and laser suture lysis.
METHODS: When 10 seconds of digital pressure on the eye following a mitomycin-C trabeculectomy produced a 20% drop of the intraocular pressure, the decision of whether or not to perform laser suture lysis was delayed until the following examination.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine consecutive eyes (27 patients) with primary open-angle glaucoma underwent mitomycin-C trabeculectomy in which laser suture lysis was required during the postoperativ

The results of 89 trabeculectomies performed on 56 patients under the age of 30 years were reviewed. Data collected included age, sex, type of glaucoma, number of years of glaucoma before surgery, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, complications of surgery, presence of a filtering bleb and follow-up period. Complete success, denoted by a postoperative IOP of 21 mmHg or less without medical therapy, occurred in 50 eyes (56.2%). Qualified success, in which IOP was 21 mmHg or less with additional medical therapy occurred in 31 eyes (34.9%) and failure, in which IOP was greater than 21 mmHg in s

BACKGROUND: Trabeculectomy is today the filtering procedure of choice, because complications are rare and success-rates high. A modification of our technique (fornix-based conjunctival flap closed by a running suture) introduced 3 years ago, has lead us to this retrospective assessment of complications and success-rates. Some of the risk factors for failure are known, others however remain obscure. This retrospective series was also used to further identify some of these risk factors for trabeculectomy failure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All 388 trabeculectomies performed between January 1992 and

The results of keratometry following trabeculectomy are presented. In contrast to the effects of wound gape after cataract extraction, trabeculectomy produces a reduction in the vertical corneal radius. An initial corresponding increase in horizontal radius is found immediately postoperatively, but this is not apparent by two and seven weeks after surgery. A possible explanation for these findings is proposed.

The reported success rates in the treatment of congenital glaucoma with goniotomy, trabeculotomy, and trabeculectomy suggest that trabeculectomy should be performed if the other procedures fail. We propose that the decision to perform primary trabeculectomy in primary and secondary congenital glaucoma reduces the effect which the many variable findings in surgical anatomy may have on the outcome of other procedures. This is a retrospective study of the results of primary trabeculectomy in 21 consecutive eyes of 15 patients with congenital glaucoma. Eighteen of 13 patients' eyes were controlled

Combined trepanotrabeculectomy (TTE) and intracapsular cataract extraction for advanced cataract and severe open angle glaucoma proved to be successful in 84% of the operated eyes which were followed for one to 11 years. Complications were infrequent as compared to other combined procedures. The frequency of postoperative flat anterior chamber in particular was much lower. In 77% of the eyes the surgical scars were covered by normal conjunctiva without evidence of extraocular filtration. No avascular cystic blebs formed. The same operation performed as a secondary procedure seems to be equally

After recalling the aim of trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy, the author mentions similar techniques, which were in use before the microsurgical era. Some details of the two techniques, performed at Zurich University Eye Clinic exclusively under the operating microscope, are presented, as well as their indications and results. Trabeculotomy is used only for congenital glaucoma, while trabeculectomy is indicated in all forms of adult glaucoma and even for combined glaucoma and cataract operations. Neither technique, nor even a combination of the two, appreciable unproved the prognosis of buphtha

INTRODUCTION: Bleb-related endophthalmitis after trabeculectomy is a rare but sight threatening complication. Thin walled blebs, occurring after adjunctive use of antimetabolite like mitomycin C and 5-flurouracil, is an important risk factor for bleb-related infections.
CASE: Forty-five years old one-eyed male had undergone trabeculectomy in past, had presented with diminution of vision, pain, photophobia in his seeing eye.
OBSERVATION: On examination, best corrected visual acuity was 5/60, thin walled avascular bleb with congested conjunctiva, minimal hypopyon, pupil had fibrinous exudate a

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that leads to visual field defects and vision loss. It is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Treatment for glaucoma aims to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) to slow or prevent further vision loss. IOP can be lowered with medications, laser, or incisional surgery. Trabeculectomy is a surgical approach which lowers IOP by shunting aqueous humor to a subconjunctival bleb. Device-modified trabeculectomy techniques are intended to improve the durability and safety of this bleb-forming surgery. Trabeculectomy-modifying device

PURPOSE: Surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) has attracted much interest in recent times because changes in corneal astigmatism can lead to decreased uncorrected visual acuity and patient discomfort. This study aimed to evaluate SIA and to identify factors correlated therewith after trabeculectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical charts of patients who were treated with trabeculectomy at 120° meridian (superotemporal area on right eye and superonasal area on left eye) by the same surgeon. Preoperative keratometric data were compared with data collected from 2 months to 12 months

Trabeculectomy is the most common surgical procedure for the management of glaucoma, which may significantly influence ocular biometry. Axial length and anterior chamber depth tend to decrease, while crystalline lens and choroidal thickness increase post-operatively. An increase in with-the-rule astigmatism is also observed after the procedure. Such biometric changes affect intraocular lens power calculation even years after the procedure. Non-contact biometric methods and postponing cataract surgery after trabeculectomy could reduce calculation errors associated with surgically induced altera

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Trabeculectomy is an effective operation for lowering intraocular pressure. However, success is limited by complications such as infection, hypotony, and scarring.
RECENT FINDINGS: These complications, which are increased by antifibrotic use, can be reduced with attention to surgical technique. We highlight the benefit of sub-Tenon anaesthesia, careful choice of the surgical site, fashioning of the scleral flap to produce diffuse aqueous flow, and better intraocular pressure control, maintenance of intraocular pressure, a formed anterior chamber, with outflow control during

AIMS: To report the experience with trabeculectomy augmented with mitomycin C and 5-fluorouracil for the treatment of paediatric glaucoma.
METHODS: Retrospective, interventional case series design was used. The sample included 17 children (29 eyes) with primary (19 eyes) or secondary (10 eyes) glaucoma who were treated with augmented trabeculectomy as the primary procedure between 1990 and 2002. Data were collected on age and family history, preoperative and end of follow up intraocular pressure, cup/disc ratio (evaluated by drawing), visual acuity, complications, and post-surgery treatment.
