Defining trauma-informed approaches and their purpose in nursing education: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: A focus on nursing student trauma has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. Scholars have turned to trauma-informed approaches to understand how nursing students can be better supported in their education and mitigate the effects of past, current, and future trauma exposure. AIM: To examine the current published literature on how trauma-informed approaches to nursing education are described in the literature. DESIGN: We conducted a scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute framework. We used the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for reporting of findings. METHODS: We performed s

Risk factors and economic impact of long-term nursing care after major trauma.

INTRODUCTION: The public could bear a heavy economic burden for trauma survivors needing long-term nursing care, especially in countries such as Taiwan that have universal health insurance coverage. The purpose of this study was to analyze the data from the National Health Insurance Research Database and to assess reimbursement to trauma patients with long-term sequelae who need nursing care. METHODS: This study included all patients who suffered major trauma (injury severity score ≥ 16) in Taiwan from 2003 to 2007. Ten years of follow-up were analyzed. Patients aged 18 to 70 who survived for

DESIGN: Observational, cross-sectional. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 722 new admissions at one nursing home in metro Atlanta between November 2019 and July 2021. METHODS: We developed a "TRAUMA" framework for TIC screening based on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Trauma-Informed Clinical Supervision for Nurses and Midwives: An Integrative Review of the Literature.

Nurses and midwives deliver 24/7 care for complex biopsychosocial needs across the lifespan. The global shortage of nurses and midwives is a challenge for healthcare organisations, placing additional stress and symptoms of trauma on those who remain. Trauma-informed care is an organisational framework that embeds trauma awareness into healthcare policies and practices to prevent re-traumatisation and promote the well-being of patients and providers. Grounded in six core principles, it addresses the multifaceted effects of trauma in healthcare. Clinical supervision supports practitioner develop

Surrogate Trauma in Nurses Providing Pediatric Palliative Care: A Phenomenological Study.

The aim of this study was to deeply examine the experiences of proxy grief among nurses providing pediatric palliative care. This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted with 16 nurses working in the pediatric ward of a hospital located in the northern region of the country. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method. The analysis revealed 3 themes (challenges experienced while caring for children in palliative care; secondary trauma and coping processes; proxy trauma and professional resilience) and 9 sub-themes (emotional strain during care, establishing an

Internet-Based Trauma Recovery Intervention for Nurses: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses, who care for patients with various traumas, may also experience post-traumatic stress disorder due to indirect or direct exposure to traumatic situations. This study examined the effectiveness of an Internet-based trauma recovery intervention for Korean nurses. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted with 112 nurses aged 23-40 years who were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 56) or control group (n = 56) from May 7 to December 20, 2020. Nurses in the intervention group attended eight sessions, and the same intervention was administered to the con

Wounded Healers: Nurses' Experiences of Workplace Bullying, Trauma, and Professional Identity.

Workplace bullying remains a persistent challenge within nursing and is associated with adverse psychological and occupational consequences. However, less is known about how bullying is experienced as trauma and how it shapes nurses' professional identity. This study explored nurses' experiences of workplace bullying and its influence on trauma and professional identity. This qualitative study employed an Interpretive Description methodology, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 registered nurses recruited from five public and private hospitals in Indonesia. Data were analysed

Nursing intuition as an assessment tool in predicting severity of injury in trauma patients.

Emergency nurses assess patients using objective and subjective data. When the charge nurse takes report from a paramedic, another form of assessment occurs. By eliciting apt data and using trauma-scoring criteria, a decision to enact a "trauma code" occurs. Considering the cost and staff utilization, it is important for the charge nurse to make sound decisions when activating a trauma code. The objective of this study is to explore the validity of nurses' use of intuition in patients to predict the severity of their injuries, and whether it impacts their choice to institute a trauma code. The

Epidemiological analysis and emergency nursing care of oral and craniomaxillofacial trauma: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We conducted a literature review on the epidemiology and emergency nursing care of oral and craniomaxillofacial trauma in order to facilitate rescue and care planning. Traumatic accidents alter oral and craniomaxillofacial anatomy and physiology, resulting in craniomaxillofacial scars and deformities, temporomandibular disorders, and oromandibular dysfunction. Such trauma affects speech, chewing, and eating; results in long hospitalization and burdensome healthcare expenses; and in severe cases may lead to potentially life-threatening complications such as respiratory

Trauma and Intensive Care Nursing Knowledge and Attitude of Foley Catheter Insertion and Maintenance.

In the acute care setting, the majority of urinary tract infections are associated with indwelling urinary catheters. Despite guidelines for proper use, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) continue to occur in critically ill/injured patients. There is a paucity of data on the translation between CAUTI prevention education and behavioral change. This project evaluated nurse's clinical knowledge and attitude toward Foley catheter insertion and maintenance to determine the benefits of addressing gaps in knowledge and inconsistencies in attitude through education.A prospective co

Reimagining pediatric nursing sustainability: Exploring trauma-informed care and impostor syndrome as drivers of burnout.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric nurses carry heavy emotional and clinical demands that leave them vulnerable to burnout. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) has helped ease burnout in the workplace, but psychological factors like Impostor Syndrome (IS) may weaken these benefits. Whether IS mediates the TIC-burnout link has not been well studied. AIM: To examine the mediating effect of impostor syndrome on the association of trauma-informed care with burnout in pediatric nurses. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in six hospitals of Mansoura City, Egypt, between October 2024 and January

Implementation of a novel nursing assessment tool in geriatric trauma patients with proximal femur fractures.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric trauma patients represent a special challenge in postoperative care and are prone to specific complications. The goal of this study was to analyse the predictive potential of a novel nursing assessment tool, the outcome-oriented nursing assessment for acute care (ePA-AC), in geriatric trauma patients with proximal femur fractures (PFF). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of geriatric trauma patients aged ≥ 70 years with PFF was conducted at a level 1 trauma centre. The ePA-AC is a routinely used tool that evaluates pneumonia; confusion, delirium and dementia (CDD); de

Assessment and screening tools for childbirth-related psychological trauma in nursing practice - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Every year, 134 million births are recorded worldwide. Nearly a third of women describe psychotraumatic symptoms related to childbirth. Post-traumatic stress disorder in the post-partum period affects between 3.1% and 6.3% of mothers. It can lead to relational disturbances in the mother-child bond and affect the child's development. Due to the under-detection of this disorder, early detection and treatment are necessary. This literature review aims to evaluate and compare the psychometric properties of screening and assessment tools for birth-related psychological tra
