Benzimidazoles in the treatment of trichuriasis: a review.

Treatment of severe symptomatic trichuriasis observed with heavy worm burdens is not satisfactory with recommended doses of mebendazole, flubendazole and albendazole. Higher doses of anthelmintics for longer periods of treatment generally improve the cure rates but treatment of such associated symptoms as diarrhoea is recommended before starting anthelmintic therapy. Such severe cases of trichuriasis should be considered separately; they do not represent the majority of cases infected by this parasite, which usually respond to benzimidazoles.

Evaluation of mebendazole for the treatment of trichuriasis.

Trichuris trichiura was found to cause severe refractory clinical illness in 25 child patients admitted to a rural hospital in northeast Queensland over a six-month period. Mebendazole produced significant alleviation of symptoms. Symptomless carrier states in 70 patients admitted to hospital for other complaints were also studied. Thirty-five of these were treated with mebendazole with a notable reduction in worm loads (as measured by Stoll egg counts) when compared with the control group. The effects of three-day and four-day courses of mebendazole on symptomless carriers are compared.

Ascariasis, trichuriasis and fatal non-transfusion.

Blood transfusion for chronic anemia can lead to acute or decompensated heart failure in patients who have fluid overload as part of their compensatory response and/or have intrinsic heart disease, and then it could be fatal in such clinical scenarios. This is the report of a case of profound chronic anemia in a young male patient, who was not transfused and then developed confusion followed by terminal cardiopulmonary arrest. Autopsy revealed severe trichuriasis to be the cause of the anemia, along with severe ascariasis, but minimal intrinsic brain disease. This supports the conclusion that …

Trichuriasis colitis detected by Doppler sonography.

Trichuriasis affects children at an estimated prevalence rate of 17% in the world population. It sometimes affects the colon and causes unspecific symptoms and laboratory findings. This case describes a child with unspecific abdominal symptoms. Color Doppler sonography showed signs of diffuse colitis and colonoscopy demonstrated colonic infection by Trichuris. US was useful to orient the investigation. We describe color Doppler sonography findings and review the medical literature about the radiological findings of this entity.

Clinical correlates of trichuriasis diagnosed at colonoscopy.

Diagnosis of Trichuris trichiura infestations is usually based on identification of barrel-shaped ova in stool, but is frequently missed on stool microscopy. We describe the clinical profile of patients in whom Trichuris infection was incidentally diagnosed at colonoscopy. In a cross-sectional study, patients with colonoscopic diagnosis of trichuriasis were enrolled from the endoscopy unit in a tertiary care center. Blood and stool samples were collected from all those who were willing to participate and provide samples. Sixty-two patients participated, with mean (SD) age of 50.5 (13.6) years …

Immunity, immunoregulation and the ecology of trichuriasis and ascariasis.

Immune responses to human roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and their role in controlling worm populations are reviewed. Recent immunoepidemiological data implicate T(H)2-mediated responses in limiting A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura populations. Reinfection studies further suggest that IL-5 cytokine responses are negatively associated with adult recruitment in T. trichiura but not A. lumbricoides and may therefore be involved in negative intraspecific and interspecific interactions mediated through the host immune system. The importance of inducible immunore

[Massive trichuriasis in an adult diagnosed by colonoscopy].

A case of massive trichuriasis in a 37-year-old female from a rural locality of the Metropolitan Region of Chile, with antecedents of alcoholism, chronic hepatic damage and portal cavernomatosis, is presented. Since 12 year ago she has had geophagia. In the last six months she has frequently presented liquid diarrhea, colic abdominal pains, tenesmus and sensation of abdominal distention. Clinical and laboratory tests confirmed her hepatic affection associated with a celiac disease with anemia and hypereosinophilia. Within a week diarrhea became worse and dysentery appeared. A colonoscopy revea…
