Miliary tuberculosis involving the central nervous system.

A woman with chronic systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was treated with prednisone, and developed an acute febrile neuroinfection. The magnetic resonance images (MRI) showed miliary micronodular lesions distributed diffusely within the central nervous system and lungs. Lumbar puncture showed pleocytosis with predominance of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, hypoglycorrhachia, elevated proteins and smears positive for acid-fast bacilli. The diagnosis was confirmed by culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the cerebrospinal fluid and bronchial biopsy tissue. She was treated with ethambutol, rifam

Risk Factors for Central Nervous System Tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiology and factors associated with pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB) in California from 1993 to 2011. METHODS: We analyzed California TB registry data for persons aged ≤18 years, comparing CNS TB cases versus non-CNS TB cases reported from 1993 to 2011. Factors associated with CNS TB and TB deaths were identified by using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 200 CNS TB cases were reported. Compared with non-CNS TB case patients, CNS TB case patients were more likely to be aged <5 years (72.0% vs 43.6%; odds ratio [OR]:

[Central nervous system tuberculosis in adult patients].

UNLABELLED: Central nervous system tuberculosis is the fifth most frequent and at the same time most severe form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis diseases. It presents with no typical signs, thus early diagnosis and treatment is of high importance concerning the outcome. Authors present the characteristics, diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives of central nervous system tuberculosis through a case report and a retrospective study of 15 patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Authors performed a retrospective analysis of medical records of patients with central nervous system tuberculosis in an academ

[Central nervous system tuberculosis: diagnosis and therapy].

Tuberculous meningitis is the most serious form of tuberculosis, but often the only manifestation of tuberculosis with non-specific initial signs and symptoms. Therefore, delayed diagnosis occasionally results into rapid progression of neurologic deficits and a poor prognosis. So, it is needless to mention that appropriate chemotherapy should be started as fast as possible under swift diagnosis. According to recent progression of molecular biological technique, PCR and other nucleic acid amplification methods are becoming to be quite useful for rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in

MR imaging of central nervous system tuberculosis.

TB involving the CNS and its coverings is a complex and potentially devastating disease. The increasing incidence of this disease in both immunologically normal as well as immunologically incompetent populations makes the subject of TB one of universal concern. Although its appearance on MR is not specific, it is important in the proper clinical setting to recognize the range of possible patterns that can be observed on images. The inclusion of TB in the differential diagnosis on the basis of the patient's region of origin, the socioeconomic background of the patient, and the presence of under

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system in children.

Tuberculosis remains one of the most common and important infectious diseases in the world. Between 1% and 2% of children with untreated tuberculosis infection will develop tuberculous meningitis. In 1997, 186 cases of tuberculous meningitis were reported in the United States. The initial clinical manifestations of tuberculous meningitis are protean, making early disease difficult to recognize. The clinical and radiographic manifestations of tuberculous meningitis result from the combination of basilar meningitis, infarction, and vasculitis. Early diagnosis can be problematic as Mycobacterium

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system in children.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS TB) in children is still a socioeconomic problem in developing countries. It has varied manifestations, symptoms are nonspecific, diagnosis can be challenging, and treatment may be difficult. It is often missed or overlooked. Among the various pathological entities, tuberculous meningitis is the most common and devastating manifestation. The resultant vasculitis, infarction, and hydrocephalus can be life-threatening. It can have grave cognitive, intellectual, and endocrine sequelae if not treated in time resulting in handicap, especially in

[A case of tuberculosis of the central nervous system].

A case of meningoencephalic tuberculosis in a 38-year old man is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by postmortem and histological examinations. The clinical picture was dominated by transverse lesion of the spinal cord at C3-C7 level that was due to specific inflammation of blood-vessel walls and massive thromboses found in their lumina.

Central Nervous System Mycobacterium Infection: Tuberculosis and Beyond.

Tuberculosis is a contagious infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent worldwide. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis of central nervous system tuberculosis and may prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality. This article presents an extensive review of pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, typical and atypical imaging appearances of intracranial and spinal tuberculosis, and advanced imaging of intracranial tuberculosis. Furthermore, we explore central nervous system infection of nontuberculous mycob

A rare case of central nervous system tuberculosis.

Intracranial abscess is an extremely rare form of central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB). We describe a case of central nervous system tuberculous abscess in absence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. A 82-year-old Middle Eastern male from Yemen was initially brought to the emergency room due to altered mental status and acute renal failure. Cross-sectional imaging revealed multiple ring enhancing lesions located in the left cerebellum and in bilateral frontal lobe as well as in the inferior parietal lobe on the left. The patient was placed on an empiric antibiotic regime

Central nervous system tuberculosis: pathophysiology and imaging findings.

With the onset of the human immunodeficiency virus pandemic, the incidence of tuberculosis, including central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis, has increased in developed countries. It is no longer a disease confined to underdeveloped and developing countries. The imaging appearance has become more complex with the onset of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis of CNS tuberculosis and may prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality. This article presents an extensive review of typical and atypical imaging appearances of intracranial tuberculo
