Epilepsy and stigmatization in Turkey.

Patients with epilepsy experience stigmatization quite often. Studies investigating stigmatization perceived by patients with epilepsy in Turkey are limited in number. In this study, we aimed to understand the relationship between stigmatization and psychopathology and also to identify the effects of stigmatization on the quality of life in epilepsy. Patients completed a socio-demographical data form and epilepsy information form. They were evaluated in terms of psychiatric diagnosis using SCID I and they were asked to complete SCL-90 R, Epilepsy Stigmatization Scale and SF 36. The percentages…

Brucellosis in Turkey -- an overview.

Although almost a century has gone by since its first description in the country, Turkey has not been able to eradicate brucellosis, which remains a major public health problem. In this review, we give an overview of the epidemiological and epizootic status of brucellosis in Turkey. Although little readily accessible data concerning the epidemiology of brucellosis in Turkey are available, the limited official and published data were analyzed. Despite being endemic in Turkey, brucellosis remains under-diagnosed and under-reported. Adherence to traditional farming practices and lifestyles and th…

The epidemiology of scabies in Turkey.

The epidemiology of scabies for the last twelve years has been studied in Turkey. Information was obtained from three regions (Istanbul, Ankara and Erzurum) having different climates. There has been an increase in scabies in the years following 1969 in Ankara and Erzurum and from 1967 on in Istanbul. It reached its maximum in 1978 in Erzurum, while this peak had been observed in early 1970s in other regions. Scabies incidence has significantly increased and decreased in winters and summers respectively, has been found to affect particularly the age group 15-44, and was observed more frequently…

Estimating prevalence of genital warts in Turkey: survey among KETEM-affiliated gynecologists across Turkey.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In order to develop cost effective health strategies regarding HPV screening and prevention methods, determining the incidence and prevalence of HPV as well as the diseases it gives rise to such as cervical cancer and genital warts is essential. This study is a first step in determining nationwide annual prevalence of genital warts in Turkey. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Through the survey sent to gynecologists in each city in Turkey, a record number of data for 4,013,084 patients, out of which 5511 diagnosed with genital warts were collected from 81 cities. The survey was se…

Pathology and tissue distribution of turkey coronavirus in experimentally infected chicks and turkey poults.

Twenty 1-day-old specific pathogen free chicks and 20 1-day-old commercially derived turkey poults were inoculated with a Brazilian strain of turkey coronavirus (TCoV) to study the pathogenicity and virus distribution up to 14 days post-inoculation by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. At 2-14 dpi, TCoV antigens were detected in the paranasal sinus and lachrymal accessory gland (Harderian gland) of infected chicks and in the ileum, ileocaecal junction and caecum of infected poults. Lymphocytic inflammation was present in these …

Wildlife rabies in Western Turkey: the spread of rabies through the western provinces of Turkey.

The incidence of rabies has decreased in Turkey during recent years. However, an increasing number of rabies cases have been reported in the Aegean (western) region of Turkey. The virus appears to have maintained a foothold in the urban areas of the province of Izmir with only three cases per year being reported during the mid-1990s. Since 2001, the virus has been recorded in the previously rabies-free provinces of Manisa and Aydin. During this epizootic, cases have been reported in both dogs and foxes, and there has been an unusually high incidence of rabies in domestic livestock, especially …

Lectin histochemistry of trachea and lung of healthy turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) and turkeys with pneumonia.

Thirteen lectins were used to characterize lectin-binding specificity of glycoconjugates on sections of formalin-fixed lung and trachea from seven normal turkeys, two turkeys with acute pneumonia, and two turkeys with chronic pneumonia. Neuraminidase was used to digest sialic acid residues. One N-acetylgalactosamine-binding lectin and two N-acetylgalactosamine/galactose-binding lectins stained the apical membrane and cytoplasm of multifocal cells that lined air atria and hyperplastic granular cells. Other lectins in these groups stained ciliated cells of the trachea and bronchi and air capilla…

Laboratory-acquired brucellosis in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory healthcare workers (HCWs) are at risk of laboratory-acquired brucellosis (LAB). AIM: To describe the risk factors of LAB among HCWs. METHODS: A multicentre survey study was conducted by face-to-face interview in 38 hospitals from 17 provinces of Turkey. A structured survey was administered to the HCWs, working in infectious diseases clinics and microbiology departments, who were at risk of brucella infection. FINDINGS: The survey response rate was 100%. Of the 667 laboratory workers, 38 (5.8%) had a history of LAB. In multivariate analysis, factors independently assoc…

[Tularemia in Konya region, Turkey].

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. In the recent years tularemia has become a re-emerging infection in Turkey with epidemics and also sporadic cases. Transmission occurs most often through consumption of contaminated water and food, direct contact with animals and insect/ tick bites. In this study, we evaluated clinical features and laboratory findings of 35 tularemia cases diagnosed during two outbreaks that occurred in two different villages during two different periods in Konya (located in Central Anatolia), Turkey and five sporadic cases. In both outbreaks,…
