Magnetic resonance imaging of sports injuries of the elbow.

Many abnormalities seen in the elbow result from trauma, often from sports such as baseball and tennis. Elbow problems are frequently related to the medial tension-lateral compression phenomenon, where repeated valgus stress produces flexor-pronator strain, ulnar collateral ligament sprain, ulnar traction spurring, and ulnar neuropathy. Lateral compression causes osteochondral lesions of the capitellum and radial head, degenerative arthritis, and loose bodies. Other elbow abnormalities seen on magnetic resonance imaging include radial collateral ligament injuries, biceps and triceps tendon inj

Anconeus Epitrochlearis Muscle Associated With Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Series.

Background: Cubital tunnel syndrome is a common compressive neuropathy of the upper extremity. The anconeus epitrochlearis muscle is an unusual but occasional contributor. We review our experience with this anomalous muscle in elbows with cubital tunnel syndrome. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed charts of 13 patients noted to have an anconeus epitrochlearis muscle associated with cubital tunnel syndrome. Results: Ten patients had unilateral ulnar neuropathy supported by nerve conduction studies. Three had bilateral cubital tunnel syndrome symptoms with 1 of those having normal nerve conduc

A case report of acute cubital tunnel syndrome caused by venous thrombosis.

Compression neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the elbow is well-recognised as cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS). Many causes of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow have been identified. A previously unreported finding of ulnar nerve compression in the cubital tunnel caused by a thrombosed proximal ulnar recurrent artery vena comitans is described.

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis causing cubital tunnel syndrome: A case report and review of literature.

Calcinosis cutis is a type of heterotopic calcification where abnormal calcium deposition occurs in skin or subcutaneous tissue. Among the subtypes of calcinosis cutis, the idiopathic variety occurs without underlying biochemical calcium abnormality. We report a rare case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis causing cubital tunnel syndrome. A 63-year-old female presented with pain and numbness in the ulnar aspect of her left hand. The X-ray of the left elbow showed deposition of radiopaque material on the posteromedial aspect. Her nerve conduction study showed evidence of ulnar nerve compression at

Cubital tunnel syndrome of the ulnar nerve caused by an epineural ganglion cyst: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The ulnar nerve has a long and complex anatomical course, originating from the brachial neural plexus in the neck with nerve trunk formation at the posterior neck triangle, and on to the axilla. This intricate anatomical pathway renders the nerve susceptible to compression, direct injury, and traction throughout its course. Compression of the ulnar nerve is the second most common compression neuropathy of the median nerve adjacent to the wrist joint, after carpal tunnel syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old Sudanese housewife complained of progressive right forearm and hand m

Some Misconceptions in the Treatment of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Radial Tunnel Syndrome, and Median Nerve Compression in the Forearm.

This article discusses ulnar, median, and radial nerve compression in the proximal forearm and elbow and some possible common misconceptions. In particular, the ligament of Struthers extremely rarely causes ulnar neuropathy. Lacertus syndrome and flexor superficialis-pronator syndrome can be diagnosed separately. Surgical release can be through a small incision. Acronyms for compression to radial nerve in proximal forearm can be simplified to radial tunnel syndrome, which includes a mild type (classical radial tunnel syndrome) and a severe type (posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) compression).

Multimodality imaging review of ulnar nerve pathologies.

The ulnar nerve is the second most commonly entrapped nerve after the median nerve. Although clinical evaluation and electrodiagnostic studies remain widely used for the evaluation of ulnar neuropathy, advancements in imaging have led to increased utilization of these newer / better imaging techniques in the overall management of ulnar neuropathy. Specifically, high-resolution ultrasonography of peripheral nerves as well as MRI has become quite useful in evaluating the ulnar nerve in order to better guide treatment. The caliber and fascicular pattern identified in the normal ulnar nerves are i

Treatment of Peripheral Nerve Compression Syndromes of the Upper Extremities: a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Nerve compression syndromes are referred to as chronic irritation or pressure palsies of peripheral nerves in areas of preformed anatomical constriction. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common nerve compression syndrome, followed by cubital tunnel syndrome. In addition, less frequent nerve compression syndromes of the upper extremities that affect the median, ulnar or radial nerves have been described. This review provides an overview of current treatment options for nerve compression syndromes of the upper extremities. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic overview. METHODS: Based on esta

Ultrasound-guided surgical treatment for ulnar nerve entrapment: a cadaver study.

Several open and endoscopic techniques for the surgical treatment of ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow (cubital tunnel syndrome) have been described that provide decompression with or without anterior transposition. Based on our experience with US-guided decompression for carpal tunnel syndrome in our department, we developed a similar surgical technique for the decompression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Using sixteen cadaver upper limbs, we performed decompression of all the structures possibly responsible for ulnar nerve compression at the elbow. The structures involved were Struthers'

Synovial osteochondromatosis at the elbow producing ulnar and median nerve palsy. Case report and review of the literature.

The authors present the case of a 53-year-old woman suffering from synovial osteochondromatosis of her right elbow responsible for ulnar and median nerve entrapment neuropathy. This condition is characterised by the formation of multiple cartilaginous nodules in the metaplastic synovium of otherwise normal joints, bursae or tendon sheaths. Treatment consisted of partial synovectomy, removal of loose bodies and microscopic nerve release. Synovial osteochondromatosis complicated by nerve compression syndromes has been rarely reported, usually with ulnar tunnel syndrome at the elbow. The literatu

The numb arm and hand.

Trauma and compression along the course of the median, ulnar or radial nerve from the brachial plexus to the fingers may cause pain, weakness, numbness or tingling of the upper extremity. Diabetes, smoking, alcohol consumption, rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism are risk factors for nerve entrapment, although these disorders typically produce bilateral symptoms. Carpal tunnel syndrome, the most common nerve entrapment condition, results from median nerve compression at the wrist. The diagnosis is suggested by decreased pain sensation and numbness in the thumb and index and middle fingers;

The Effectiveness of Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) in the Treatment of Nerve Compression Syndromes of the Upper Extremity: A Retrospective Observational Clinical Study.

Background: Nerve compression syndromes of the upper extremity are a common cause of neuropathic pain and functional impairment. Recently, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) infiltrations have emerged as an effective biological approach to the treatment of this type of injury. The objectives of this retrospective observational study were to assess clinical improvement in patients with median and ulnar nerve entrapment syndrome after undergoing biologically-assisted nerve release surgery with plasma-rich-in-growth-factors (PRGF) technology. Methods: Participants (n = 39) with moderate-to-severe nerve c

Ulnar nerve neuropathy caused by pathologic ossification: a case report.

PURPOSE: Cubital tunnel syndrome is a well-described entity with many reported etiologies and anatomical compression sites. Accessory ossicles of either traumatic or congenital origin might occur around the elbow joint. Only one case reporting such ossicles compressing the ulnar nerve exists in previous literature. We aim to present this entity with a detailed description of the patient history and treatment. CASE REPORT: We report a case of 30-year-old female presenting with classical signs of cubital tunnel syndrome-positive Wartenberg's and Froment's signs, hypoesthesia in the fourth and f

Morphology and morphometry of the ulnar head of the pronator teres muscle in relation to median nerve compression at the proximal forearm.

INTRODUCTION: The pronator syndrome is a rare compression neuropathy of the median nerve. Ulnar head of the pronator teres muscle may cause compression at proximal forearm. HYPOTHESIS: Detailed morphologic and morphometric studies on the anatomy of the ulnar head of pronator teres is scarce. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We dissected 112 forearms of fresh cadavers. We evaluated the morphology and morphometry of the ulnar head of pronator teres muscle. RESULTS: The average ulnar head width was 16.3±8.2mm. The median nerve passed anterior to the ulnar head at a distance of 50.4±10.7mm from the intere

Endoscopic decompression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, several studies suggested that simple decompression is as effective as anterior transposition in ulnar nerve entrapment syndrome. Simple decompression might be performed with minimally invasive techniques. The authors present their technique and results with endoscopic decompression in ulnar nerve entrapment syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 2005 and March 2008, 24 patients (mean age, 45.5 years; range, 26-67 years) underwent surgery for 26 ulnar nerve entrapment syndromes (2 bilateral). All patients presented with typical clinical signs and neurophysiologic

Regional anatomic structures of the elbow that may potentially compress the ulnar nerve.

HYPOTHESIS: Traumatic injuries to the ulnar nerve at the elbow are a frequent problem as it is vulnerable to stretching and compression with motion of the upper limb. The aim of the present study was to explore the course of the ulnar nerve at the elbow and forearm and to determine possible anatomical structures that may cause compression of this structure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 12 upper limbs from cadavers. The length of any fibrous bands, and if present, their distance to the medial epicondyle was recorded. RESULTS: On 5 sides a fibrous band originating from the medial intermu
