This prospective case-control study explored the association between urinary magnesium levels and acute urinary retention (AUR) in individuals presenting to the emergency department. Forty-six participants, comprising 23 cases and 23 age- and sex-matched controls, underwent urine analysis for magnesium, calcium, and creatinine concentrations. Here we present the case of a 50-year-old woman with acute urinary retention who was treated by the insertion of a permanent catheter. For associated headaches, fever and muscle and joint pain, the patient underwent neurologic examination, including lumbar puncture and magnetic resonance of head and spine. Acute urinary retention is defined as failure to urinate in spite of an adequate amount of urine in the bladder. Acute urinary retention in children is rare, and may cause pain and distress. Diagnosis and urgent treatment are essential. Identification and treatment of underlying medical conditions such as constipation, neurological impairment or adverse reactions to medications may prevent recurrence of retention. We describe six cases of children who were hospitalized with acute urinary retention and review the medical literature on the subject.

OBJECTIVE: The possible relationship between herpes zoster and acute urinary retention was investigated.
METHODS: Two cases of acute urinary retention secondary to herpes zoster are described. The pathophysiological mechanisms that influence this condition are analyzed.
RESULTS: Herpes zoster appears to play an important role in the development of micturition disorders.
CONCLUSIONS: Acute urinary retention can result from herpes zoster infection, although it usually resolves spontaneously.

There is no scientific data on which is the best method and catheter to use in acute urinary retention in males. We therefore compared the efficiency of a size 12 G latex rubber balloon catheter with a similar calibre but more expensive catheter made of polyvinyl-chloride (PVC). It is an uncommon condition, with a prevalence of 1:1000 - 1:16 000.
