Pediatric uveitis differs from adult-onset uveitis and is a topic of special interest because of its diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Children with uveitis are often asymptomatic and the uveitis is often chronic, persistent, recurrent, and resistant to conventional treatment. Anterior uveitis is the most common type of uveitis in children; the prevalence of intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis varies geographically and among ethnic groups. Regarding etiology, most cases of pediatric uveitis are idiopathic but can be due to systemic inflammatory disorders, infections, or a manifestatio

Anterior uveitis is the most common form of uveitis. There are several known and many possible etiologies for anterior uveitis. After examining the posterior segment and ruling out masquerade syndromes, the main step of etiologic diagnosis is clinical characterization. It is essential to establish unilateral versus bilateral involvement and presence or absence of granulomatous features. Subsequently, a work-up may be obtained which then helps to confirm diagnostic hypotheses based on the detailed history and clinical examination. The priority is to rule out an infection, although less frequent

Infectious uveitis is one of the most common and visually devastating causes of uveitis in the US and worldwide. This review provides a summary of the identification, treatment, and complications associated with certain forms of viral, bacterial, fungal, helminthic, and parasitic uveitis. In particular, this article reviews the literature on identification and treatment of acute retinal necrosis due to herpes simplex virus, varicella virus, and cytomegalovirus. While no agreed-upon treatment has been identified, the characteristics of Ebola virus panuveitis is also reviewed. In addition, forms

Uveitis is less common in children than in adults, and its diagnosis and management can be particularly challenging. Young children are often asymptomatic either because of inability to express complaints or because of the truly asymptomatic nature of their disease. Even in advanced cases, parents may not be aware of severe visual impairment until the development of externally visible changes such as band keratopathy, strabismus, or leukocoria. Therefore, the diagnosis is often delayed and severe complications may be seen at the time of initial visit. Young children may not be cooperative for

Behçet's disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder that is most common in countries along the ancient "Silk Road". The eye is the most commonly involved vital organ in Behçet's patients and the typical form of involvement is a relapsing remitting panuveitis and retinal vasculitis. Uveitis is the initial manifestation of the disease in 10-15% of the patients. Anterior uveitis is always nongranulomatous. Diffuse vitritis, retinal infiltrates, sheathing of predominantly retinal veins, and occlusive vasculitis are the typical signs of posterior segment inflammation. Spontaneous resolution of

In recent years, ocular involvement due to TB has re-emerged. Tuberculous uveitis is a readily treatable disease and the consequences of delay in either ocular or systemic diagnosis can be very serious for the patient. It is important to have a high index of suspicion of the diagnosis in patients with unexplained chronic uveitis and this will be influenced by the socio-economic circumstances, family history, ethnic origin, and previous medical history of the patient. Treatment with antituberculous therapy combined with systemic corticosteroids resolves inflammation without recurrences after me

Intermediate uveitis is an intraocular inflammation involving the anterior vitreous, peripheral retina and pars plana. It usually affects patients from 5 to 30 years old, without gender or racial preferences. The etiology is unknown but there are several associated diseases: multiple sclerosis, idiopathic optic neuritis, autoimmune corneal endotheliopathy, sarcoidosis, thyroid diseases and inflammatory bowel diseases. Symptoms are blurry vision, floaters and distortion of central vision. The syndrome is bilateral in 80% of the patients and chronic with periods of exacerbation and remission. Cl

Enterovirus uveitis (EU) is a new infant eye disease that was first observed in 1980. Three distinct subtypes of human echoviruses, EV19/K, EV11/A and EV11/B, caused five hospital outbreaks of EU in different Siberian cities in 1980-1989, affecting approximately 750 children, predominantly below 1 year of age. Sporadic EU cases were also retrospectively diagnosed in other regions of Russia and in different countries of the Former Soviet Union. The illness was characterised by rapid iris destruction and severe complications, including cataract and glaucoma. The disease has been a subject of int

Half a century ago, bacterial diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis were thought to cause the majority of cases of uveitis. Nowadays, a number of infectious diseases are responsible for uveitis. In our countries, herpes virus and toxoplasmosis are the principal causes of uveitis. Furthermore, because specific antimicrobial therapy can be curative and prevent long-term visual sequel, early diagnosis of infectious causes of uveitis should be a priority for all practitioners.

Intermediate uveitis defines the group of diseases formerly called pars planitis or chronic cyclitis. Its frequency amounts to 10-20% of all uveitis cases. The anamnesis is vague. The clinical symptoms mainly involve the vitreous. The visual acuity is variable, depending of the involvement of the retina. A slight inflammation of the anterior chamber is possible, but no synechiae are present. The vitreous shows a positive Tyndall and cells, snow balls, eventual plaques on the pars plana. Serious cases are complicated by a retinal vasculitis, which often leads to cystic macular edema and papilla

PURPOSE: Idiopathic uveitis is frequently the most common diagnosis in series from uveitis clinics. This study sought to determine the percentage of patients initially diagnosed as idiopathic, noninfectious uveitis referred to a tertiary uveitis center who were subsequently found to have an identifiable cause of uveitis.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: We performed a computerized database analysis of 179 consecutive patients who were referred to our practice with the diagnosis of idiopathic, noninfectious uveitis between 2008 and 2016. Patients were evaluated by a thorough histor

A case of TINU-syndrome with complications in the posterior segment is reported. A 15-year old boy presented, eight months after an acute tubulo-interstitial nephritis, a bilateral anterior uveitis, followed by an unilateral posterior uveitis with papillitis. The treatment with oral and topical corticosteroids was successful.

In pregnancy, a plethora of factors causes changes in maternal immunity. Uveitis flare-ups are more frequent in the first trimester and in undertreated patients. Management of non-infectious uveitis during pregnancy remains understudied. A bibliographic review to consolidate existing evidence was performed by a multidisciplinary group of Ophthalmologists, Gynaecologists and Rheumatologists. Our group recommends initial management with minimum-required doses of corticosteroids, preferably locally, to treat intraocular inflammation whilst ensuring good neonatal outcomes. If ineffective, clinicia

BACKGROUND: Uveitis is a major cause of blindness in developed countries, and adverse effects associated with long-term use of topical or systemic steroids and immunosuppressive agents are notable. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in sarcoidosis-associated uveitis (SAU) and idiopathic uveitis (IdU).
METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study included 42 patients with SAU and 15 patients with IdU treated with HCQ for at least six months between March 2003 and December 2022. All types of uveitis were included. Most patients had chronic bilatera
