Hair tourniquet syndrome (HTS) is a condition, where a strand of hair encircles the base of an appendage. We report a rare case of HTS of the uvula and review relevant literature.

We report a case of enlarged uvula (5.5cm) that caused difficulty in swallowing and speech after it had been damaged by intubation or suction of the throat. Medical treatment failed, so 4.5cm was resected by diathermy. The patient made an uneventful recovery.

Eleven uvular biopsies were investigated for their morphology, the presence of mast cells and the distribution of hyaluronan and its major ligand CD44. Three microanatomical sites--surface epithelium, subepithelial area and area of glands--were examined. The oral side of the uvula was covered by a 15-20 cell thick layer of keratinized/parakeratinized surface epithelium, firmly anchored to the underlying connective tissue by connective tissue papillae. The width of the intercellular spaces in the epithelium increased toward the basal lamina, a location that exhibited intense hyaluronan and anti…

Four cases of respiratory distress and apnea associated with an elongated uvula are presented. In all cases, the uvula was found to intermittently fall onto the epiglottis and vocal cords. In all four patients, resection of the uvula led to resolution of all airway symptoms. It is hypothesized that the uvula, touching the vocal cords, caused intermittent laryngospasm and subsequent symptoms of cough, airway obstruction, and cyanosis. The anatomic reasons for such phenomenon are discussed.

The prevalence of cleft uvula (CU) was determined among 70,359 school children 6-18 years of age; 90 children having the condition were chosen as probands for a family study. Prevalence of CU was 0.44 per cent with no sex differences. The Non-Ashkenazi group had a higher prevalence than the other population groups. The prevalence of CU in parents and siblings was 7.7 per cent and 7.5 per cent respectively. The findings from the family study support the hypothesis of a polygenic mode of inheritance for CU. The prevalence of cleft palate and agenesis of upper lateral incisors in the families stu…

Bifid uvula is often regarded as a marker for submucous cleft palate although this relationship has not been fully confirmed. The reason for the tacitly assumed connection between these two anomalies has, in part, been perpetuated by the generally accepted definition of submucous cleft palate as the triad of bifid uvula, notching of the hard palate, and muscular diastasis of the soft palate. Recently, investigations have provided evidence of more subtle manifestations of submucous cleft palate by the use of nasopharyngoscopic examination of the palate and pharynx. It has been determined that s…
