The characteristics of vaginal discharge in childhood are outlined and the causes tabulated. Necessary instruments and techniques for examination of children are described together with suitable formats for treatment.

A total of 232 pregnant Black antenatal patients was examined to determine the clinical features of vaginal infection. There was no correlation between the symptoms and the infection. The finding of a 'strawberry' vagina was specific for Trichomonas vaginalis infection, for which a single dose of 1 600 mg metronidazole (Flagyl) was found to be a highly effective form of therapy.

Vaginal discharge is a common symptom of genital infection in women. Identifying its source can be challenging, because a large number of pathogens cause vaginal and cervical infection, and several infections may coexist. Patient history and physical examination findings may suggest a diagnosis. Useful tests for etiologic diagnosis include pH analysis of vaginal fluid, the "whiff" test, wet mount examination, culture, and Gram's stain. Once the source of infection has been identified, the patient can be treated, usually with oral antibiotics, oral antifungals, or topical vaginal preparations.

Among women attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in Nairobi with vaginal discharge, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis were isolated from the cervix in 32 (26%) of 122 and four (7%) of 58 women respectively. Ninety-four patients with vulvovaginitis and vaginal discharge were assessed clinically and had vaginal swabs taken in an effort to establish a definite diagnosis. A high incidence of fungous infection was found while there was a surprisingly low incidence of Trichomonal vaginitis. These findings vary markedly from recent surveys in other countries (Delaha et al. (1964); Gray and Barnes, 1965; Desai et al., 1966).

In this study specimens taken from 93 patients who admitted to outpatient clinics of SSK Ankara Gynaecology and Obstetrics Hospital with vaginal discharge were examined for G. vaginalis, T. vaginalis, C. albicans and N. gonorrhoeae. A general practitioner was consulted by a 15-year-old girl, virgo, suffering from foetid vaginal discharge. The girl was seen by a gynaecologist after antimicrobial treatment had failed. Further investigations revealed that a embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma was present, a sarcoma botryoides. INTRODUCTION: Vaginal discharge is one of the common reasons for gynecological consultation. Many of the causes of vaginitis have a disturbed vaginal microbial ecosystem associated with them.
