A method is described for measuring the relative activities of vitamin A active substances based on their direct effect on the cornified vaginal epithelium of vitamin A-deficient rats. The results obtained agree well with those found in the tracheal organ culture assay. The relative activities found for several test compounds were: all-trans-retinoyl-beta-glucuronide greater than all-trans-retinoic acid greater than all-trans retinol greater than all-trans-5,6-epoxyretinoic acid. Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test is an established method of cervical cancer screening. However, most women in Thailand are still reluctant to undergo pelvic examination. A prospective study was carried out on the use of self inserted vaginal tampon to collect specimens for Pap test in 126 patients at Ramathibodi Hospital from September to October 1990. In endocervical smears obtained from 40 women with Trichomonas vaginalis infection, 25 women with infections other than T. vaginalis and 35 cytologically normal women, inflammatory cells consistent with mast cells (tissue basophils) were examined. Mast cells were present predominantly in the smears of patients infected with T. vaginalis but were infrequent in those of patients with other infections and in those of the normal, control group. The numbers of mast cells in endocervical smears and the white blood cell counts in vaginal discharges showed a positive correlation with the degree of T.

Dysbacteriosis is a microscopical diagnosis. In women with dysbacteriosis, an overgrowth of coccoid bacteria and almost a complete absence of lactobacilli are observed in the (stained) vaginal smear. The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of this microscopic diagnosis in clinical practice. Trichomonas vaginalis has been recognized by cytologists in Papanicolaou-stained smears of cervical and vaginal secretions for some years.
