Vector-borne parasitic diseases--an overview of recent changes.

This paper summarises the impact of different changes (environmental, ecological, developmental) on the one hand, with the impact of control measures on the other. The former group of changes have tended to exacerbate the incidence and prevalence of vector-borne parasitic diseases while the reduced public funds available for the health sector have reduced disease surveillance systems. However, some vector control/eradication programmes have been successful. Vector control in onchocerciasis and Chagas' disease and immediate host control in Guinea worm have reduced the public health importance o

Exploring memory effects: Sparse identification in vector-borne diseases.

Predicting the human burden of vector-borne diseases from limited surveillance data remains a major challenge, particularly in the presence of nonlinear transmission dynamics and delayed effects arising from vector ecology and human behavior. We develop a data-driven framework based on an extension of Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics to systems with distributed memory, enabling discovery of transmission mechanisms directly from time series data. Using severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome as a case study, we show that this approach can uncover key features of tick-borne diseas

Update on emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are spread by ticks and mosquitoes on every inhabitable continent and pose a persistent and escalating threat to global public health. The incidence of the vector-borne RNA viruses, which are the focus of this article, has increased in recent decades. This diverse group comprises multiple genera of viruses, ranging from dengue, the most common mosquito-borne virus in the world, to more obscure viruses like Oropouche virus, circulating in South America, and multiple orthonairoviruses recently identified in China. The transmission dynamics of these diseases are shape

Vector-borne diseases on Borneo island: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Borneo, the third largest island in the world, is facing a significant burden of emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases due to rapid changes in primary tropical rainforests and urban landscapes. These vector-borne diseases include the endemic epidemic cycles that occur in the more populated and urbanized areas, as well as the possible transmission through enzootic and sylvatic transmission cycles that occur mainly in the overlapping landscapes or among the indigenous population in the forest. The island will be changed significantly in the future due to the increase in huma

The Threat of Vector-Borne Diseases in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone is vulnerable to a wide range of vector-borne diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, tsetse flies, black flies, and other vectors. Malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and onchocerciasis have posed the greatest threat and have received the most attention in terms of vector control and capacity for diagnosis. However, malaria infection rates remain high, and there is evidence of circulation of other vector-borne diseases, such as chikungunya and dengue, which may go undiagnosed and unreported. The limited understanding of the prevalence and transmission of these diseases restricts the capac

Anthropogenic changes and associated impacts on vector-borne diseases.

Urbanization impacts the community composition, abundance, and richness of mosquitoes. As urbanization processes increase globally, it is important to better understand the biodiversity loss caused by anthropogenic changes and associated impacts on vector-borne diseases. Mosquito surveillance and control are key for reducing the risk of mosquito-borne pathogen transmission.

Vector-borne diseases in Iran: epidemiology and key challenges.

Vector-borne diseases have become a global health concern in recent decades as a result of global warming, globalization, growth in international trade and travel, use of insecticide and drug resistance. This review study addressed the key vector-borne diseases and their current status in Iran to emphasize the requirements for further research on vector-borne diseases. The dispersion patterns of these diseases differ in various regions. Some of them such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and Q fever are distributed all across Iran, whereas some others such as plague, leishmaniasis, tularemia

Lipid hijacking: a unifying theme in vector-borne diseases.

Vector-borne illnesses comprise a significant portion of human maladies, representing 17% of global infections. Transmission of vector-borne pathogens to mammals primarily occurs by hematophagous arthropods. It is speculated that blood may provide a unique environment that aids in the replication and pathogenesis of these microbes. Lipids and their derivatives are one component enriched in blood and are essential for microbial survival. For instance, the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum and the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, among others, have been shown to scavenge and m

Vector-borne diseases and climate change: a European perspective.

Climate change has already impacted the transmission of a wide range of vector-borne diseases in Europe, and it will continue to do so in the coming decades. Climate change has been implicated in the observed shift of ticks to elevated altitudes and latitudes, notably including the Ixodes ricinus tick species that is a vector for Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Climate change is also thought to have been a factor in the expansion of other important disease vectors in Europe: Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito), which transmits diseases such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya

Vector-borne viral diseases in Sweden--a short review.

Ockelbo disease, caused by a Sindbis-related virus transmitted to man by mosquitoes, was first described in the central part of Sweden in the 1960s as clusters of patients with fever, arthralgia and rash. An average annual rate of 30 cases was recorded in the 1980s but no cases have been diagnosed during the last few years. Nephropathia epidemica (NE) characterized by fever, abdominal pain and renal dysfunction has been known to cause considerable morbidity in Sweden during the last 60 years but the etiologic agent (Puumala virus) was not isolated until 1983. This virus's main reservoir is the

Knowledge mapping of risk mitigation measures against vector-borne diseases.

A comprehensive synthesis of current evidence on surveillance, prevention and control measures for 25 selected vector-borne diseases (VBDs) affecting animals in the EU is presented here. The assessment integrates evidence from systematic literature reviews, modelling studies, field investigations and expert judgement. The aim is mapping the availability and effectiveness of risk mitigation measures (RMMs), including surveillance, movement restrictions, vaccination, culling, medicinal treatments, on-farm biosecurity and vector control. Of the 25 VBDs considered, 13 are listed under the EU Anima

Immuno-molecular prospecting for vector-borne diseases in central Mexico.

Climatic changes have influenced the temporal and spatial distribution of diseases. In livestock-grazing areas, rodents are reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens; therefore, they play an important role in the transmission of diseases affecting domestic animals and humans. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of the zoonotic agents: Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi, Ehrlichia canis and Rickettsia rickettsii, as well as the presence of viral RNA from the Bunyaviridae, Togaviridae and Flaviviridae families, in wild rodents from animal production units in central M

Monitoring vector-borne diseases: A study in Italy and Greece.

Rapid urbanisation and environmental changes are reshaping mosquito population dynamics and the transmission of vector-borne pathogens. Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus have successfully adapted to anthropogenic environments, becoming key vectors of emerging and re-emerging arboviruses and filarial parasites. This study conducted a comparative entomological and pathogen surveillance between 2022 and 2023 in central Italy and Crete to assess species composition, population dynamics, and circulation of arboviruses and filarial nematodes across different ecological contexts. In Italy, a total o

Differentiating and Managing Emerging Tropical Vector-Borne Diseases During Pregnancy.

Vector-borne diseases, including dengue, Zika virus, chikungunya, and Oropouche, pose significant health risks during pregnancy, with potential adverse outcomes for both mother and fetus. As a result of expanding vector habitats, there is increasing likelihood that obstetricians will encounter these illnesses in their clinical practice. This clinical guidance aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of tropical vector-borne diseases in pregnant individuals, emphasizing clinical risk stratification based on epidemiologic risk factors. The clinical overlap

Prototype early warning systems for vector-borne diseases in Europe.

Globalization and environmental change, social and demographic determinants and health system capacity are significant drivers of infectious diseases which can also act as epidemic precursors. Thus, monitoring changes in these drivers can help anticipate, or even forecast, an upsurge of infectious diseases. The European Environment and Epidemiology (E3) Network has been built for this purpose and applied to three early warning case studies: (1) The environmental suitability of malaria transmission in Greece was mapped in order to target epidemiological and entomological surveillance and vector

Transmission dynamics for vector-borne diseases in a patchy environment.

In this paper, a mathematical model is derived to describe the transmission and spread of vector-borne diseases over a patchy environment. The model incorporates into the classic Ross-MacDonald model two factors: disease latencies in both hosts and vectors, and dispersal of hosts between patches. The basic reproduction number R(0) is identified by the theory of the next generation operator for structured disease models. The dynamics of the model is investigated in terms of R(0). It is shown that the disease free equilibrium is asymptotically stable if R(0) > 1, and it is unstable if R(0) > 1;
