Multisegmental anomaly of the inferior vena cava with thrombosis of the left inferior vena cava.

We present a rare case of an extensive venous thrombosis associated with a multisegmental anomaly of the inferior vena cava (IVC), double IVCs, a hypoplastic right IVC, an aneurysm arising at the distal portion of the right IVC, and a severe stenosis between the prerenal and the hepatic segments of the IVC.

Left-sided Inferior Vena Cava with Hemiazygos Continuation to Left Superior Vena Cava.

Congenital anomalies of superior (SVC) and inferior vena cava (IVC) are not uncommon and usually incidentally recognized. The normal embryogenesis is a complex process involving the formation of several anastomoses. Failure of certain vessels to develop or regress results in numerous caval variations and anomalies. Although these are usually without significant clinical implications, awareness of these anomalies is necessary to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and suggest the presence of other abnormalities and for the planning of vascular intervention or surgery. We present a very rare, caval anomal

[Ultrasound diagnosis of left inferior vena cava and double inferior vena cava in fetus].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the application of ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis of left inferior vena cava and double inferior vena cava in fetus. METHODS: The clinical data and ultrasonographic findings of the fetuses with left inferior vena cava (18 cases) or double inferior vena cava (16 cases) were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The ultrasonographic images of left inferior vena cava showed that in the transverse view of the fetal upper abdomen the inferior vena cava and abdominal aorta were in the normal position; below the level of the hilum, the inferior vena cava was located behin

Bilateral superior vena cava with right superior vena cava draining into left atrium.

Anomalies of systemic venous return are extremely heterogeneous congenital malformations with variable ranges from completely normal physiology to severe forms of right to left shunting requiring surgical treatment. Anomalous drainage of a right-sided superior vena cava (SVC) to the left atrium (LA) is one of the rarest variants of systemic venous return anomalies, characterized by right-to-left shunt physiology and cyanosis. Here we report a 2 years old girl presented with cyanosis which was observed shortly after birth by her parents but not further investigated. She is otherwise active girl

[A case of Kartagener's syndrome with bilateral superior vena cava and absent inferior vena cava].

A 39-year-old man with a history of repeated attacks of acute bronchitis and pneumonia since childhood was admitted complaining of cough, sputum, and a high fever. A diagnosis of Kartagener's syndrome was made because of the presence of mirror-image dextrocardia with complete situs inversus, bronchiectasis in right B6 and B10, and chronic sinusitis. Examination of the ciliary ultrastructure of the bronchial epithelium showed defective inner dynein arms and impaired nasal clearance was suggested by the saccharin particle method. Contrast venography of great veins revealed a McCotter type II bil

Evaluation of Inferior and Superior Vena Cava and the Vena Cava Ratio in Growth Restricted Fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changes in the diameters of superior vena cava (SVC) and inferior vena cava (IVC) and to measure the ratio between SVC and IVC in growth-restricted fetuses and compare these results with normally grown fetuses. METHODS: Twenty-three consecutive patients with fetal growth restriction (FGR) (Group I) and 23 pregnant gestational age-matched controls (Group II) between 24 and 37 weeks of gestation were enrolled in the study between January 2018 and October 2018. The diameter of the SVC and IVC from inner wall to inner wall was measured in all patients by sonographic exa

Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement in a Duplicated Inferior Vena Cava: A Case Report.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) duplication is a well-known anatomic variation that is important when relevant procedures are being planned. Duplication of IVC is a relatively rare to detect especially vascular anomaly with a prevalence of 1.5% (range 0.2-3.0%). Knowing this anatomical variation is very important in cases of IVC filter placement. Filter placement in duplicated IVC cases has many options like placing it in both vena cavae, suprarenal filter placement, or coil embolization of the intervenous segment plus placing a filter in the right IVC. We report a case of a patient with newly diagno

Liver cirrhosis in hepatic vena cava syndrome (or membranous obstruction of inferior vena cava).

Hepatic vena cava syndrome (HVCS) also known as membranous obstruction of inferior vena cava reported mainly from Asia and Africa is an important cause of hepatic venous outflow obstruction (HVOO) that is complicated by high incidence of liver cirrhosis (LC) and moderate to high incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the past the disease was considered congenital and was included under Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). HVCS is a chronic disease common in developing countries, the onset of which is related to poor hygienic living condition. The initial lesion in the disease is a bacterial in

An unusual case of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava in a patient with a duplicated inferior vena cava.

Leiomyosarcoma of primary vascular origin is a rare primary soft tissue tumour, which arises mainly from the inferior vena cava (IVC). Clinical symptoms depend upon the size and location of the tumour and presents usually with abdominal pain, palpable mass and weight loss. Complete surgical resection with clear surgical margin plays a central therapeutic role. The effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapy remains to be evaluated. We report a 64 year old Chinese female who presented with abdominal mass and pain associated with weight loss and was subsequently diagnosed with inferior vena cav

[From venous ligation to vena cava filter. Objectives and hazards of vena cava interruption].

Starting from the use of venous ligatures (the first measure employed), methods for the prevention of pulmonary embolism have been perfected to arrive now at the endocaval insertion of permanent or temporary filters. Both in the materials used and the techniques employed, major progress has been made and incidents and accidents (thrombosis, migration, perforation of the venous wall) have become rarer. The efficacy of classical treatment methods (anticoagulants, early mobilisation, hemodilution, etc.), the preventive value of which has long been recognized, must also be taken into account when

Inferior Vena Cava Thrombosis.

Thrombosis of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is an under-recognized entity that is associated with significant short- and long-term morbidity and mortality. In absence of a congenital anomaly, the most common cause of IVC thrombosis is the presence of an unretrieved IVC filter. Due to the substantial increase in the number of IVC filters placed in the United States and the very low filter retrieval rates, clinicians are faced with a very large population of patients at risk for developing IVC thrombosis. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of data and societal guidelines with regards to the diagnos

[SUPERIOR VENA CAVA SYNDROME].

Superior vena cava syndrome is a complex of symptoms developing as a result of disordered circulation in the superior vena cava system and impaired venous blood outflow from the upper part of the body. The classical signs of superior vena cava syndrome are cyanosis, swelling of the head, upper limbs and upper chest, dilatation of subcutaneous veins, apnea, hoarseness, cough, etc. Diagnostics of superior vena cava syndrome is based on chest X-ray and CT Superior vena cava syndrome is a rare condition and therefore usually unrecognized during the first examination of the patient.

Is the inferior vena cava dispensable?

Inferior vena caval (IVC) ligation during surgery is considered prohibitively risky. Most of the IVC ligations reported in the literature have been in the context of trauma damage control. There are only anecdotal reports in the literature of a successful elective ligation of the IVC in children. Records from a paediatric tertiary care centre were reviewed over a 20-year period to identify and evaluate patients who underwent an intentional ligation of the IVC during elective surgery. The reports from the literature of IVC ligations were reviewed. The physiologic and anatomic basis for the sequ

Superior vena cava syndrome.

The symptoms that result from compression of the superior vena cava are known as superior vena cava syndrome. The syndrome was originally described as secondary to infection such as tuberculosis or syphilitic aortic aneurysm. Currently, the origin is generally cancer or thrombotic events. Adenocarcinoma of the lung is the most common cause. Thrombotic causes are increasing because of the rise in use of pacemakers and central venous catheters for access or treatment purposes. Symptoms may include a feeling of fullness in the head, dyspnea, and cough. Clinical findings may include facial and nec

[Injury of inferior vena cava].

Results of treatment of 102 patients with injuries of inferior vena cava (IVC) were analyzed. The causes of injury were penetrating stab-incised wounds of abdomen (67.5% patients), close trauma (28.2%), gunshot wounds (4.3%). Zone of confluence of iliac veins was injured in 7% patients, infrarenal and renal segments -- in 51.9%, suprarenal -- in 21.5%, supra- and retrohepatic -- in 19.6% patients. Injury of one wall of vein was revealed in 63.7% patients, both walls -- in 14.7%, complete disruption of vessel -- in 7.9%, avulsion or fissure of hepatic veins -- in 13.7%. In 96.2% patients trauma
