Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease (CD), is a vector-borne disease that affects several mammalian species, including humans. An endemic cycle in wild animals has been described, where dogs with an outdoor lifestyle are at higher risk. CD diagnosis is challenging, requiring multiple tests. Although there are several serologic tests available, they were originally developed for human diagnosis. Currently, there is limited knowledge about their performance in other species. A survey was conducted via mail among West Virginia certified loggers to determine the number of nonfatal, logging-related injuries received during the past 12 months that required medical attention or restricted job ability. Loggers were asked to describe injuries, safety training, and protective equipment use. The blood pressure of 3,166 adolescents was measured periodically in Richmond during the period 1974-1977. The subjects were students in public and private schools and ranged in age from 14 to 18 years. Analysis of the readings showed minimal differences relating to age, sex, school and race but a strong correlation with obesity. Only two organic renal causes of hypertension were discovered. Type III complete urethral disruption is an uncommon injury that occurs primarily in male patients with pelvic trauma. Herein we present our results from management of this condition. Management should initially be conservative with a catheter placement in all cases. Full return of urinary function was noted in all patients managed endoscopically, and in 1 of 3 of patients managed with open urethroplasty. During the 14-year period from 1990-2003, West Virginia experienced 220 deaths related to All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Death rates in West Virginia however, were significantly higher than the national rate or those of any of the its five surrounding states. Term fetal deaths occurring in Virginia in 1983 were reviewed to determine potential preventability. During this period, 52 (48%) of 108 such deaths were judged preventable. The leading cause of preventable antepartum death was maternal hypertension, followed by diabetes, inadequate fetal surveillance, and postterm pregnancy. The major cause of intrapartum fetal death was long delay between the onset of obvious fetal compromise and delivery. The incidence of preventable term stillbirth seemed inversely proportional to hospital size.
