Two patients affected with vitiligo showed achromic lesions in areas of skin apparently normal submitted to the action of external traumatic agents. In the first case the striate linear lesion might be attributed to the excoriation due to pruritus determined by scabies. In the second one an angular lesion in both feet was strictly limited to the areas exposed to the straps of sandals.

BACKGROUND: Mixed vitiligo (MV), the association of segmental vitiligo (SV) and nonsegmental vitiligo, has been rarely reported.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to delineate the clinical spectrum of MV through a case series of patients with typical SV associated with patchy bilateral vitiligo.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional evaluation in the setting of a prospective observational study conducted in the vitiligo clinic of the department of dermatology in Bordeaux, France.
RESULTS: Nineteen patients with MV were identified. Four were male and 15 were female. Most patients had an ons…

Vitiligo is a common acquired depigmenting skin disease characterized by a progressive loss of functional melanocytes. It may appear from the first years of life to late adulthood. Childhood vitiligo (CV), defined as vitiligo that begins before the age of 12 years, is common and may differ from post-CV in terms of epidemiology, clinical presentation, comorbidities, and treatment options. Taking into consideration the potential significant psychosocial impact of the disease on both children and their parents, all available therapeutic options must be offered to patients who desire treatment. Ac…

Segmental vitiligo is characterized by its early onset, rapid stabilization, and unilateral distribution. Recent evidence suggests that segmental and nonsegmental vitiligo could represent variants of the same disease spectrum. Observational studies with respect to its distribution pattern point to a possible role of cutaneous mosaicism, whereas the original stated dermatomal distribution seems to be a misnomer. Although the exact pathogenic mechanism behind the melanocyte destruction is still unknown, increasing evidence has been published on the autoimmune/inflammatory theory of segmental vit…

Vitiligo is an acquired dyschromia of the skin in which there is a loss of epidermal melanocytes. The prevalence of vitiligo is approximately 1% in the United States and 0.1-2% worldwide. The exact pathogenesis of vitiligo remains elusive and is likely multifactorial. After completing this update, participants should be able to discuss the epidemiology of vitiligo and summarize the proposed mechanisms for development of this disease. In addition, they should be able to discuss physical findings, approach to the patient, and some of the therapeutic modalities for this disorder.

Vitiligo can be treated using various new and experimental therapies, such as narrow-band ultraviolet B microphototherapy (NB-UVB), narrow-band ultraviolet B excimer laser and monochromatic excimer light. The first is recommended for generalized vitiligo, whereas the latter two are indicated in patients affected by segmental and bilateral symmetrical vitiligo with < 20% cutaneous involvement. Medical treatments include topical corticosteroids and other topical treatments, such as antioxidants, tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, prostaglandin E, and vitamin D derivatives. Excellent therapeutic result…

Vitiligo is a depigmentation disorder resulting from autoimmune destruction of cutaneous melanocytes. The psychosocial ramifications of this often disfiguring disease can be substantial. Half of the patients with vitiligo experience disease onset in childhood. Although largely similar to the disease in adults, pediatric vitiligo does have differences in epidemiology, associations, and treatment. We review vitiligo as it relates to the pediatric population, emphasizing key differences with adults and the latest treatment advances.

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder in which pigment is lost from the skin and adnexae. Half of all cases begin before the age of 20 years. Until recently, there was a paucity of published data regarding effective therapy of vitiligo. Current therapy is quite effective, and while many patients may not experience complete repigmentation, 50% to 75% repigmentation of vitiligo with recent onset routinely can be expected with available therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: There are two commonly recognized forms of vitiligo-generalized and localized. This classification is important to understand the course of the disease and its prognosis. Most patients have generalized vitiligo; few patients have both segmented and generalized vitiligo.
OBSERVATION: We report four more cases of mixed vtiligo, segmental with generalized type. This report is only the second to present a case of segmental with generalized vitiligo.
CONCLUSION: Mixed vitiligo is not yet part of a standard classification. Its etiology is not yet fully defined. Further research is requ…

The term "trichrome vitiligo" has been used to describe lesions of vitiligo that have an intermediate level of color between the achromic center and the peripheral unaffected skin. We describe a 12-year-old black girl with a generalized pigmentary disorder that first appeared when she was 3 years of age. Five shades of colors--white, tan, medium brown (unaffected skin), dark brown, and black--were present. Biopsy specimens of the depigmented areas showed a complete absence of melanocytes, whereas the most hyperpigmented areas were characterized by an increase in epidermal pigment and number of…

Vitiligo in children is a distinct subset of vitiligo and differs from adult vitiligo. Characteristic features include family history of autoimmune or endocrine disease, higher incidence of segmental vitiligo , development of early or premature graying, increased incidence of autoantibodies and poor response to topical PUVA. The exact prevalence of vitiligo in children varies between 0.1-4% of the world population and seems to be higher in India than in other countries and it occurs more frequently in females. Around 12% to 35% of pediatric vitiligo patients have family members with the diseas…
