Urethral pressures are usually considered to be static and only few authors have emphasized time-related pressure changes. We conducted a study on 10 healthy male volunteers, monitoring the urethral pressures at maximal urethral closure pressure, 2.5 cm proximal (bladder neck) and 2.5 cm distal (pars bulbosa) respectively over 30 min periods. In a prospective study, 355 healthy, asymptomatic, male volunteers, 18 to 45 years of age, were screened by esophagogastroduodenoscopy before admission to clinical trials. One hundred thirty-four volunteers (38%) showed abnormal endoscopic findings. Some volunteers had more than one site of involvement or more than one grade of lesion in each anatomic location. This study examined the relationship between drug preferences as measured in a laboratory-based choice procedure and measures of personality and attitudes toward drugs. Healthy volunteers participated in laboratory-based double-blind studies measuring preference for ethanol or diazepam vs placebo. In this study we describe in detail the characteristics of sphincter of Oddi motor function in a large group of healthy subjects. Studies were obtained in 50 healthy volunteers. The findings showed a sphincter of Oddi segment that had a basal pressure of 14.8 +/- 6.3 mm Hg (X +/- SD). Phasic contractions were superimposed on the basal pressure. They had an amplitude of 119.7 +/- 32 mm Hg, a duration of 4.7 +/- 1 sec, and a frequency of 5.7 +/- 1.2 contractions/min. Forty seven healthy young volunteers underwent defecographic examination to determine the range of normal findings. Normality was shown to encompass radiological features often considered pathological. Mutagenic activity of paracetamol (PC) was studied in a group of healthy persons (3 men, 8 women) after a simultaneous administration of 3 x 1000 mg of PC and of identical dose of PC + 1000 mg of ascorbic acid within an 8 hr. period. Blood sample tests were made at intervals 0, 24, 72 and 168 hrs. Cytogenetic analysis showed that in 24 hrs. the PC increases the aberrant cell frequency to the value of 2.77 +/- 0.37 percentage vs. 1.68 +/- 0.30% (p less than 0.05) prior to the administration of the drug. In 72 hrs., the occurrence of micronucleoli in the buccal mucosa increased to 0.38 +/- 0.07%
