A Turkish patient with cobblestone lissencephaly and eye involvement without characteristic muscular changes for congenital muscular dystrophy died at the age of 3 months presented with neonatal apneic periods and generalized seizures. Serum creatine kinase level, electromyography, chromosome analysis and blood biochemistry were normal. Unilateral microphthalmia, retinal dysplasia and internal strabismus were the ocular findings. Magnetic resonance imaging clearly demonstrated the thickened, irregular, nearly agyric cobblestone cerebral cortex with underlying unmyelinated white matter, hydroce

The Dandy-Walker syndrome is said to be associated with a high incidence of mental retardation and motor dysfunction leading some to suggest termination of the affected fetus in utero. Since this view seemed contrary to our experience, we reviewed 19 patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome diagnosed from 1966 to 1983. Thirteen patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome were diagnosed before 6 months of age and followed for more than 2 years (mean: 10 years). In the absence of other associated major abnormalities, 7 of 8 (88%) are functioning well and have attended regular schools. Two of these seven

Two new cases of Walker's lissencephaly are reported. In this disease first described by Walker in 1942 important cerebral malformations and various ocular anomalies are associated. The main cerebral malformations consist of hydrocephalus and agyria, and the ocular anomalies concern the anterior segment as well as the retina which is frequently dysplastic. The originality of our cases is due to the retina which was not dysplastic but showed particular modifications which are discussed. Moreover, in the second case the cerebral cortex was rather microgyric. The aspect of the ocular lesions and

BACKGROUND: Walker-Warburg-Syndrome (WWS) comprises malformations of the brain and the eyes with muscle dystrophy. Its course is usually lethal within the first 60 weeks of life. As far as we know there are no reports in the literature dealing with WWS in adults.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year old female died because of cardio-pulmonary failure while she had an infection of the respiratory tract. The patient had been mentally deficient and had suffered from recurrent single convulsions. 17 years before death funduscopy had revealed an optic atrophy. Diabetes mellitus was known for ca. 15 years. The n

Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by type II lissencephaly, cerebellar and retinal anomalies, and congenital muscular dystrophy. We report a female diagnosed with WWS based on clinical criteria. This patient was found to have fetal hydrocephalus on ultrasonography at 29 weeks of gestation, and exhibited severe hypotonia, ocular malformations, and hydrocephalus at birth. MRI revealed type II lissencephaly, hydrocephalus, and other severe brain malformations. Genetic analysis was performed to distinguish WWS from severe Fukuyama-type congenital muscul

We report on a 23-year-old male with growth retardation, blepharophimosis, congenital contractures, minor anomalies of the face, and severe mental retardation. This patient is the second adult reported with the Marden-Walker syndrome. Blepharophimosis, contractures, growth retardation, and developmental delay persisted whereas minor anomalies of the face were less noticeable as the patient grew older. Behaviour changed from kindness in childhood to restlessness, hyperactivity and aggressiveness in adolescence.

Aging is a critical global issue that contributes to the high incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Blood screening emerges as the most pro … essary due to the low specificity of individual biomarkers. Herein, we propose DNAzyme-based 3D DNA walkers for the sensitive and multiplex detection of five AD-associated miRNA biomarkers: hsa-miR-125b, hsa-miR-342-3p, hsa-miR-29b, hsa-miR-191-5p, and hsa-miR-7d-5. The DNAzyme-based 3D DNA walkers provide highly efficient and autonomous amplification of …

PURPOSE: This study investigated pediatric physical therapists' use of support walkers (SWs) for children with disabilities.
METHODS: An 8-page survey was mailed to 2500 randomly selected members of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association. Respondents to the survey included 513 pediatric physical therapists who were users of SWs. Descriptive statistics were calculated and themes were analyzed.
RESULTS: Several SWs were reported as used most often to improve gait, mobility, participation at school, and interaction with peers. Use commonly included a month trial …

Walking barefoot is common in developing countries and the feet are therefore exposed to a variety of trivial injuries, some of which lead to cellulitis or abscess formation. If left untreated or improperly managed, osteomyelitis or septic arthritis, usually involving the heel or metatarsals, may follow. In countries with limited resources, the emphasis should be on clinical assessment for diagnosis, and good surgical technique for treatment. We report 4 patients with thorn prick osteomyelitis of the foot due to walking barefoot. All were treated with thorn removal, surgical debridement, and o

Sixty idiopathic toe walkers (age range 1 to 15 years) were evaluated to determine the natural history of toe-to-toe gait and the relationship between the range of ankle dorsiflexion and increasing age. The majority of toe walkers had a normal birth weight (average 7.06 pounds), walked on time (average 11.14 months), began toe walking immediately (87%), stood plantigrade (90%), were able to demonstrate a heel-toe gait (88%), and toe walked intermittently (68%). Forty-six percent of all toe walkers were found to have 0 degree or less of passive ankle dorsiflexion. Equinus toe walkers (mean dors…

BACKGROUND: The number of older people with mobility impairments using wheeled walkers is increasing; however, the handling of these walking aids is often ineffective. Moreover, age-associated functional loss, environmental demands and fear of falling may additionally challenge mobility. The new training program "Active and safe with wheeled walkers" aims to enhance skills and to improve mobility. The present pilot study was carried out to assess the feasibility of the training as well as to identify training effects and methodological insights for further research.

This study investigates local stability of a four-link limit cycle walking biped with flat feet and compliant ankle joints. Local stability represents the behavior along the solution trajectory between Poincare sections, which can provide detailed information about the evolution of disturbances. The effects of ankle stiffness and foot structure on local stability are studied. In addition, we apply a control strategy based on local stability analysis to the limit cycle walker. Control is applied only in the phases with poor local stability. Simulation results show that the energy consumption is

Idiopathic toe-walking is defined as persistent toe-walking in a normal child in the absence of developmental, neurological or neuromuscular conditions. True idiopathic toe-walking is a rare referral, representing approximately 1:100 new patients seen in the Paediatric Orthopaedic Clinic. A prospective study of idiopathic toe-walking (ITW) was organised between 1999 and 2003. Patients underwent full history, neurological examination and assessment of ankle dorsiflexion, followed by below-knee weight-bearing casting. Forty four developmentally normal children with no delay in walking age were i

Interlimb coordination can be used as a metric to study the response of the neuromuscular system to mechanical perturbations and behavioral information. Behavioral information providing haptic feedback on thigh angle has been shown to increase stride length and consequently walking speed, but the effect of such feedback on limb coordination has not been determined. The current work investigates the effects of this feedback on lower-limb coordination and examines if such effects are dependent on the age of the walker. Existing kinematic data were examined from 10 young and 10 older adults durin

OBJECTIVE: Despite idiopathic toe walking (ITW) being a significant source of stress and anxiety for children and parents alike, little is known about the effect on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The primary research question for this study was "Is ITW associated with impaired HRQoL, and is the degree of equinus contracture related to the degree of impairment?"
METHODS: Twelve pediatric orthopaedic centers across the United Kingdom participated in this prospective, cross-sectional observational study of children younger than 18 years with ITW. Data were collected between May 2022 and

BACKGROUND: Support walkers are a type of assistive device that may enable non-ambulant children with disabilities to walk independently and promote improvements in bowel function, bone mineral density (BMD), mobility, independence, participation and social function. However, there is little evidence to support these benefits and there is a lack of research describing the use of support walkers in clinical practice. This study aimed to examine the use of support walkers for children with disabilities in clinical practice.
METHOD: A survey was distributed via professional organisations, charit…
