Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz is an emerging low input, stress tolerant crop with seed oil composition suitable for biofuel and bioproduct production. The chemical compositions and ultrastructural features of surface waxes from C. sativa aerial cuticles, seeds, and roots were analyzed using gas chromatography and microscopy. Alkanes, primary fatty alcohols, and free fatty acids were common components of all analyzed organs. A particular feature of leaf waxes was the presence of alkyl esters of long-chain fatty acids and very long-chain fatty alcohols, ranging from C38 to C50 and dominated by C42…

The presence of wax is a common finding during ear examination of children and it is one of the main causes of avoidable hearing impairment in children. The objective of this study was to find out the prevalence of wax in ear and evaluate the hearing loss in school-aged children. This is a cross sectional school-based study conducted over a four-year period. Children aged 5-16 were examined by otoscope and pure tone hearing thresholds were obtained at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz frequencies. A total of 53,970 children from 312 schools of Kathmandu valley were screened. The prevalence of ear wax was 3

BACKGROUND: The high ureolytic activity of rumen microbiota is a concern when urea is used in ruminant feed, because it leads to fast urea conversion, resulting in possible intoxication and lower nitrogen utilization. This study intended to microencapsulate urea using carnauba wax to obtain slow-release systems in the rumen. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, arranged in a 3 × 2 factorial, with the urea encapsulated with carnauba wax in ratios of 1 : 2; 1 : 3, and 1 : 4 (UME 2; UME 3, and UME 4) and two particles sizes (small, PS ; and large, PL ).
RESULTS: All formula

The high mortality rate of mothers and children during delivery was not taken into consideration by science before the end of the XVII Centu … ted to the XVII Century Sicilian wax modeller Gaetano Giulio Zumbo, mainly renouned for the "Plague waxes" and some anatomical heads: most of his works are exhibited in the Museum La Specola in Florence.

Plants are sessile organisms that have developed hydrophobic cuticles that cover their aerial epidermal cells to protect them from terrestri … on of key enzymes, transporters, and regulators involved in the biosynthesis of cutin and cuticular waxes. In particular, cuticular wax biosynthesis is significantly influenced in an organ-specific manner or by environmental conditions, and is controlled using a variety of regulators. Recent studies on the regulatory mechanisms underlying cuticular wax …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and biocompatibility of bone wax as an implant material for medialisation laryngoplasty in a large animal model.
METHODS: Three Dorper-cross ewes underwent type I thyroplasty of the right vocal fold with bone wax. The animals were monitored for four weeks for general wellbeing. The animals were euthanised and the larynges harvested. Histological evaluation was performed to assess for adverse tissue reaction and biocompatibility.
RESULTS: The mean (± standard deviation) amount of bone wax implanted was 0.49 g (± 0.12 g). No adverse events were reported. Ex vi

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the clinical presentation, microbiological profile and management of complications of bone wax usage for surgical procedures at the skull base.
METHOD: The case records of a series of five patients who developed post-operative surgical site complications because of bone wax usage during skull base surgery were reviewed.
RESULTS: In all five patients, persistent site-specific clinical features were noted along with intra-operative presence of excessive bone wax. Three unique cases of presentation, one with a fungal brain abscess because of Aspergillus f

Cuticular waxes are essential for the well-being of all plants, from controlling the transport of water and nutrients across the plant surface to protecting them against external environmental attacks. Despite their significance, our current understanding regarding the structure and function of the wax film is limited. In this work, we have formed representative reconstituted wax film models of controlled thicknesses that facilitated an ex vivo study of plant cuticular wax film properties by neutron reflection (NR). Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) waxes were extracted from two different wheat str…

Understanding the chemical drivers of plant flammability is essential for predicting fire behavior in fire-prone ecosystems. While previous research has largely focused on the role of terpenes, the contribution of cuticular waxes to foliar flammability remains poorly understood. In this study, we explored foliar flammability in six native species of the Chilean sclerophyllous forest, five of which were successfully characterized for cuticular wax chemistry. Foliar flammability was characterized by measuring ignition probability, ignition time, flame duration, and combustion time of foliar samp…

This study presents for the first time an analysis of the content and chemical composition of the cuticular waxes and cutin in the leaves of the widespread and important tropical species Terminalia catappa. The leaves were collected in the equatorial Atlantic islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, in the Gulf of Guinea. The epicuticular and intracuticular waxes were determined via dichloromethane extraction and their chemical composition via GC-MS analysis, and the content and monomeric composition of cutin were determined after depolymerization via methanolysis. The leaves contained an epidermal c…

WSL4 encodes a KCS6 protein which is required for cuticular wax accumulation in rice. Very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) are essential precursors for cuticular wax biosynthesis. VLCFA biosynthesis occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum and requires the fatty acid elongase (FAE) complex. The β-ketoacyl-coenzyme A synthase (KCS) catalyzes the first step of FAE-mediated VLCFA elongation. Here we characterized the Wax Crystal-Sparse Leaf 4 (WSL4) gene involved in leaf cuticular wax accumulation in rice. The wsl4 mutant displayed a pleiotropic phenotype including dwarfism, less tiller numbers and re
